ISTANBUL (AP) ? A Turkish media report says Turkey has recognized a new Syrian opposition group as a legitimate representative of the Syrian people.

Anadolu news agency quotes Turkey's foreign minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, as saying Thursday that the Syrian National Coalition is "the only legal representative" of Syria and he urged other countries to join in recognizing the coalition.

Davutoglu was speaking on a visit to Djibouti. Turkey, which shares a border with Syria, is a major backer of the Syrian opposition.

Last weekend, Syria's splintered rebel factions agreed to a U.S.-backed plan to unite under a new umbrella group that seeks a common voice and strategy against the regime of President Bashar Assad. France was the first Western country to formally recognize the coalition as the sole legitimate representative of Syrians.
