Palm Springs In Home Health Care | health and fitness article updates

You come across many situations in your life when you have to make crucial decisions. Having a local in-home healthcare may be one of those to give the best possible care to your seniors at home, to give them the life and attention they deserve.

Dealing with old people needs somebody who takes the job seriously and carefully. He/she should be professionally qualified in old-age care, responsible, respectful and punctual. Take care always not to choose somebody who always roam around with a headset and phone chatting or messaging without looking after the needs of whom they are supposed to take care of. Be sure the home health care service in Palm Springs cares to choose people who really are aware about care-taking so that the disabled or elderly people get the right and timely help they need. They always will be utterly strict to follow discipline and routines when in charge of an in-home patient.

Someone who is older has seen and done a lot and they really appreciate being cared for in their later years. They will rely on you for care and companionship. Home health care work can be very strenuous because you have to transfer your patients efficiently without hurting them or you. A back brace is worn by some aides so that they don't have a back spasm.

Being an in-home healthcare person is very much a responsible job. You need to be punctual, methodical and well-conducted. You might need to sacrifice your time to treat them, cleanse them and taking them to doctor as per appointment and schedules.

You also need to consider the potential stress and burden that comes with becoming emotionally attached to your In-Home Health Care patients. Keep in mind that these people may very well become ill or perhaps even pass away, and when that happens it can feel exactly like it happened to your best friend.

Employees in this line of work usually need more time to keep up emotionally. Normally, you will get more and more capable of handling situations as time goes by. However, if you feel that is not the case, then in-health care is not suitable for you.

You can't think of better comfort for your parents or guardians if you give them the care and attention they deserve in a homely environment. Your loved ones need to be given every attention and care by the Palm Springs home health care staff.

Botswana to ban wildlife hunting

Botswana will ban commercial hunting from January 2014 over growing concerns about the sharp decline in wildlife species, officials have announced.

"The shooting of wild game for sport and trophies is no longer compatible with our commitment to preserve local fauna," the environment ministry said.

The ban is likely to be controversial as many communities depend on hunting for their livelihoods.

As much as a third of the global elephant population lives in Botswana.

Recent estimates place the number at about 130,000.

Conservationists are concerned about the erosion of river banks caused by the animals in some nature parks, the BBC's Letlhogile Lucas in the capital, Gaborone, reports.

The ban, set to come into place on 1 January, could also pose a threat to local communities, in particular bushmen, for whom hunting is a means to survive, our correspondent adds.

Average trophy fee per species

  • Elephant: Up to $30,000, depending on weight
  • Lion: $29,000
  • Leopard: $7,150
  • Buffalo: $3,744
  • Giraffe: $3,500
  • Zebra: $1,923

Furthermore, selling hunting licences to wealthy Westerners is an extremely lucrative business, he says.

Hunting concessions currently exist in the northern Okavango Delta and the parks of the Kalahari region, famous for its upmarket safari lodges.

According to the environment ministry's official statement, the government will continue to issue special game licences "for traditional hunting by some local communities within designated wildlife management areas".

Due to its seasonal nature, hunting has only contributed a minimal amount to the tourism sector, which ranks second to the diamond industry in terms of its revenue earnings, the ministry said.

Designated hunting zones will be turned into "photographic areas".

The announcement has been welcomed by the International Fund for Animal Welfare.

"The ideal scenario would be that it has a similar effect to the ban on whaling 20 years ago," the organisation's spokesman, Adrian Hiel, told the BBC.

"Whale watching is now proven to be more sustainable and profitable than hunting and killing the animals."

Earlier this year, Spain's King Juan Carlos faced international criticism for going on a hunting trip in Botswana.

Prolific Van Persie keeps United top of EPL

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:17 p.m. ET Nov. 28, 2012

LONDON (AP) - Robin van Persie preserved Manchester United's narrow lead in the Premier League with the quickest goal of the season, scoring after 32 seconds in a 1-0 victory over West Ham on Wednesday.

Defending champion Manchester City remained a point behind its neighbor with a 2-0 victory at Wigan on goals by Mario Balotelli and James Milner, but Rafa Benitez's tough start as interim Chelsea manager continued with a 0-0 home draw against Fulham.

The point at least lifted Chelsea into third place above West Bromwich Albion, which lost 3-1 at Swansea to end a four-match winning run in the league.

Tottenham climbed to fifth place by beating Liverpool 2-1, with Spurs winger Gareth Bale scoring at both ends, while Arsenal was held to a 1-1 tie at Everton after also taking the lead after less than a minute through Theo Walcott.

Stoke came from behind to beat Newcastle 2-1, a fourth straight loss for the visitors, while Mark Clattenburg - the referee at the center of recent racism accusations - made his return to the middle in Southampton's 1-1 draw at home to Norwich.

Benitez was greeted with roars of disapproval prior to his first match in charge - a 0-0 home draw with Man City on Sunday - but fans gave him a less hostile reception three days on.

Instead, there was a general feeling of apathy around Stamford Bridge which lingered throughout a listless encounter at Stamford Bridge, which Fulham edged.

Chelsea has clearly improved defensively under the pragmatic Benitez but its attacking spark that marked its bright start to the season has disappeared. Boos rang out at the final whistle, with Chelsea having created few clear-cut chances in front of watching owner Roman Abramovich.

"It's still a long way to go. We have to keep going. We'll have chances," Benitez said.

The Spaniard needs a slice of luck that Van Persie was granted at Old Trafford, with the Netherlands striker's shot looping up off James Collins and over stranded goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen for his ninth goal of the campaign.

"We got a great start," said Ferguson, whose side has more often than not conceded first this season. "You hope to go on from a start like that and some of our football was very good, but we never quite finished them off."

For City, it was the complete opposite, starting sluggishly at Wigan but ending well to maintain its unbeaten start. The champions' goals came in the space of four minutes, with Balotelli marking his return to the starting lineup by burying a loose ball in the 69th.

Milner, a second-half substitute, wrapped up victory in the 72nd, only to go off injured before the final whistle with a hamstring problem.

---

MADRID (AP) - David Villa scored twice as Barcelona eased into the fifth round of the Copa del Rey with a 3-1 home win against Alaves to advance 4-1 on aggregate.

Alaves silenced the Camp Nou ahead of celebrations to mark its 113th birthday later this month by taking the lead when Borja Viguera headed Miquel "Miki" Martinez's long-range cross into the net in the 17th minute.

Adriano equalized in the 35th after beating a defender and then skillfully striking the ball low, beneath approaching goalkeeper Sergio Herrera.

Cristian Tello was felled in the 56th, earning a free kick that Villa converted for his 300th professional goal with a beautifully struck shot. Four minutes later, he added another from an assist by Tello.

Villa's goals steadied the home team and led to some fluid, fast-passing play, culminating in a shot just over the crossbar by Tello in the 68th and another inches wide by Villa a minute later.

Sevilla beat Espanyol 3-0 to advance 6-1 on aggregate. On Monday, Espanyol fired Mauricio Pochettino after four years in charge as coach. His replacement, Javier Aguirre, wasn't present to oversee the match.

Valencia, Levante, Atletico Madrid and Getafe also progressed after second legs in the round of 32.

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) - Leader Bayern Munich labored to a 2-0 victory over 10-man Freiburg, while Bayer Leverkusen won 4-1 at Werder Bremen to move into second place in the Bundesliga.

Leverkusen has won five of its past six games and moved past defending champion Borussia Dortmund, which drew 1-1 at home against Fortuna Duesseldorf on Tuesday.

Leverkusen is 10 points behind Bayern, which earned the unofficial title of "autumn champion" with three matches to spare before the winter break, the earliest a team has achieved that distinction.

"There are still some matches to play, we want to extend our lead," said Bayern captain Philipp Lahm, who provided the pass for Vitaliy Tymoshchuk's goal in the 79th minute that secured victory.

Dortmund travels to Munich on Saturday for the featured match of the season, trailing Bayern by 11 points.

Stuttgart edged out last-place Augsburg 2-1 and Borussia Moenchengladbach beat Wolfsburg 2-0 in other matches Wednesday. Nuremberg beat Hoffenheim 4-2, the loss putting coach Markus Babbel under more pressure.

---

PARIS (AP) - Bafetimbi Gomis scored a hat trick as Lyon thrashed Marseille 4-1 to climb above Paris Saint-Germain to the top of the French league.

Steed Malbranque was the other scorer for the visitors before Loic Remy grabbed a 77th-minute consolation for Marseille, which had Rod Fanni dismissed late on.

Also, Montpellier and Lille progressed to the semifinals of the French League Cup by beating Nice 3-2 and Bastia 3-0, respectively. St. Etienne advanced to the last four on Tuesday by beating PSG on penalties.

Scientists discover water ice on Mercury: Ice and organic material may have been carried to the planet by passing comets

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Mercury, the smallest and innermost planet in our solar system, revolves around the sun in a mere 88 days, making a tight orbit that keeps the planet incredibly toasty. Surface temperatures on Mercury can reach a blistering 800 degrees Fahrenheit -- hot enough to liquefy lead.

Now researchers from NASA, MIT, the University of California at Los Angeles and elsewhere have discovered evidence that the scorching planet may harbor pockets of water ice, along with organic material, in several permanently shadowed craters near Mercury's north pole.

The surprising discovery suggests to scientists that both ice and organic material, such as carbon, may have been deposited on Mercury's surface by impacts from comets or asteroids. Over time, this volatile material could then have migrated to the planet's poles.

"We thought the most exciting finding could be that this really was water ice," says Maria Zuber, the E.A. Griswold Professor of Geophysics in MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences, and a member of the research team. "But the identification of darker, insulating material that may indicate complex organics makes the story even more thrilling."

Zuber and her colleagues published their results this week in the journal Science.

Mounting evidence for ice

The possibility that water ice might exist on Mercury is not new: In the 1990s, radar observations detected bright regions near Mercury's poles that scientists believed could be signs of either water ice or a rough planetary surface. However, the evidence was inconclusive for either scenario.

To get a clearer picture of Mercury's polar regions, Zuber and her colleagues analyzed observations taken by NASA's MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry and Ranging) mission, a probe that has been orbiting the planet and mapping its topography since April 2011.

Mapping the planet's surface is a challenging task, as the craft must weather the sun's intense radiation, which can "play havoc with electronics," Zuber says. What's more, the probe moves from pole to pole in an elliptical orbit, making for an extremely tricky mapping mission, both dynamically and thermally. Despite these challenges, MESSENGER's onboard laser altimeter has amassed more than 10 laser pulses that have been used to map topography and measure the near-infrared reflectance of the surface.

Last year, researchers analyzed the probe's topographic observations and created a high-resolution map of Mercury; they then overlaid previous radar observations. They found that the bright regions detected in radar lined up with permanently shadowed craters at the planet's north pole -- regions that never see the sun, and which are potentially ideal places for ice to survive. This finding was one more piece of evidence that Mercury might harbor water ice.

Revealing shadows

In this latest analysis of MESSENGER's observations, scientists believe they have found conclusive evidence for water ice on Mercury, although the data was at first puzzling.

The team found that the probe's reflectance measurements, taken via laser altimetry, matched up well with previously mapped radar-bright regions in Mercury's high northern latitudes. Two craters in particular were bright, both in radar and at laser wavelengths, indicating the possible presence of reflective ice. However, just south of these craters, others appeared dark with laser altimetry, but bright in radar.

The observations "threw us off track for a long time," Zuber says, until another team member, David Paige of UCLA, developed a thermal model of the planet. Using MESSENGER observations of Mercury's topography, reflectance and rotational characteristics, the model simulated the sun's illumination of the planet, enabling precise determination of Mercury's temperature at and below the surface.

Results indicated that the unusually bright deposits corresponded to regions where water ice was stable at the surface; in dark regions, ice was stable within a meter of the surface. The dark insulating material is consistent with complex organics that would already be dark but may have been darkened further by the intense radiation at Mercury's surface.

In addition, MESSENGER's neutron spectrometer detected elemental hydrogen in the vicinity of Mercury's north pole. The combination of the compositional, spectral and geometric observations and the thermal models provided a strong, self-consistent explanation for the unusual radar backscatter observations.

Paul Lucey, a professor of geophysics and planetology at the University of Hawaii, points out that MESSENGER has also revealed a number of regions where surfaces were much darker than in previous radar measurements. Lucey interprets these results as possible evidence of receding ice on Mercury's surface.

"This suggests that in the past, ice was more extensive on Mercury, and retreated to its current state," says Lucey, who was not involved in the research. "Even Mercury experiences global warming."

MESSENGER will continue to orbit Mercury, and Zuber says future data may reveal information beyond the planet's surface. "There are still some really good questions to answer about the interior," Zuber says. "I'll tell you, we're not done."

Optimizing Your Landing Pages for Increased Success | Business 2 ...

Your landing page is critical when it comes to your business?s success. It is important that your landing page has the most up-to-date and appropriate information possible. You should look at it and assess its effectiveness and improve content periodically.

Using content sparingly on your landing page

It is not a good idea to make your landing page too content heavy because it may overwhelm (or even intimidate) your visitors. You should try to make your paragraphs short and make sure that the language that you use is clear and concise and gets right to the point of telling your visitors about your business as well as communicating what you can do for them.

The advantage of putting your form on your landing page

The landing page is an extremely important element when it comes to attracting online traffic. Your landing page should contain and accurate description of what you do and what you represent. It should also contain a call-to-action, in which you need to tell your visitors exactly what you want them to do. Landing pages often contain forms that you want your visitors to complete. You may have a better chance of getting your visitors to complete your form if you put it on the landing page itself as opposed to providing a link on your landing page that leads to the form.

Making your form as simple as possible

The simpler you make your form, the better your chances will be of getting your visitors to complete it. As you are looking at your form and considering how you might be able to reduce the number of fields that you have, you need to identify which information must stay (name, Email address, and/or phone number) in your form and which information can be eliminated. You need to make sure that whichever data you sacrifice is not going to cause you to lose out on people who could have very well ended up becoming your loyal customers eventually. Of course, the positive results that you will gain are that your visitors will view you in a positive light because you have not annoyed them with a long, tedious form to complete.

Clear and concise headlines

Your headlines are going to be the part of your writing that will either attract the attention of your readers or not. The headline, of course, is the first thing that your visitor is going to read. It is critical that you make it abundantly clear what your business is all about and your headline must include some message about how you plan to help your visitors to solve their problems. If your headlines are not well written, your customers will leave your website and most likely won?t be inclined to return.

Perfect grammar

When content contains grammatical errors, spelling errors, awkward language, etc, it says a great deal about the writer (or the business owner). It says that the person doesn?t pay attention to details and that they are careless and don?t care about the quality of the work that they produce. That is not the image that you want to portray to your existing clients and perspective clients.

Building trust

Trust is a critical element when it comes to your business and one of the places where trust comes into play in a big way is on the landing page. Some of the ways in which you can build trust are with testimonials, security and trust certification, seals of approval, etc. The more your visitors trust you, the more inclined they will be to eventually buy from you. It is a simple fact.

Conclusion

As was discussed earlier, remember that it is important to periodically examine your landing page and continue to ask yourself if it is still working as well for your business as it did when you first created it. If the answer is truly ?yes,? you are in good shape. However, if the answer is ?no,? you need to revisit what you have and try to come up with ways to really make it buzz again.

We are pleased to provide you with the insightful comments contained herein. For a free assessment of your online presence, let?s have coffee.

Is DIY In Your DNA? | Fast Horse

I grew up in a very DIY family. My parents built our first home, and I mean they actually built it. There was no hiring out of tough jobs or allowing others to oversee the process; they built a two-story, three-bedroom home from the ground up. My mother hung sheet rock and laid tile all while nine months pregnant with me. She?s a brute.

When I was 10, we moved to town and lived in a home that was built in 1877. My parents gutted the entire thing and, you guessed it, started from scratch so they could DIY. By this time I was accustomed to falling asleep to my father pounding nails or sanding floors, but after a while I just wanted a ?normal? house without an inch of?sheet rock?dust under my feet. I always swore to my parents that I would NEVER live in an unfinished home when I grew up, and would always hire other people to do the work.

My actual floor.

Ha! Fast forward to today and guess what I did all weekend ? sanded our hardwood floors so we could re-stain them. Yep, the DIY bug was not something I could escape from and now I live in a ?fixer upper? and can honestly say that I am proud to be a DIYer.

I have to give props to my ?rents for doing all this DIYing before there was an arsenal of tips and tricks available at their fingertips. When my boyfriend and I encounter a problem, we have the option of quickly looking up a how-to on YouTube or a quick search in Google to help us solve the issue. My favorite way of acquiring information is a good ol? DIY/home improvement blog. I love a good blog. A step-by-step guide to how the average Joe attacks a home improvement project, along with real-life tid bits of information that you only get from messing it up yourself first.

I am such a fan of a certain DIY blog that I recently stood in line for four hours to catch a glimpse of the real people behind my favorite blog, Young House Love. I?ve followed this blog religiously well before I had my own home to renovate, but fell in love with their quirky style and funny home improvement tips enough to check their blog daily (sometimes multiple times a day).

So whether you fancy yourself a?die-hard?home improvement buff like my parents or maybe you reach your limit at painting an accent wall, in today?s DIY-world you will always have a place to find inspiration and guidance. Maybe you will even become so inspired (see Young House Love, I swear you will get hooked) that you will completely change your mind, like me, and decide doing it yourself?isn?t?so bad after all.

Found in the centre of the Three Valleys, Meribel is one of the most popular and stunning ski areas in France. Offering a whopping 604km of continuously linked piste, as well as countless off piste opportunities, it?s no surprise that avid skiers venture to Meribel year after year. From beginners, intermediates to advanced, there?s something for all abilities too. Meribel?s lift system is ultra modern, with queues virtually unheard of, another bonus.

When it comes to spending some time off the slopes, Meribel is situated near the pretty town of Moutiers. Made up of narrow streets, traditional architecture and inviting restaurants, places to visit in Moutiers include the Palace of the Archbishop Counts and Cathedral Saint-Pierre.

With its incredible skiing, breathtaking scenery and countless opportunities to explore, Meribel certainly ticks all the right boxes when it comes to ski holidays in France

4639229188_23708ba388_zWhen you visit a review on Google Play for an app, book, song or movie, you won't have to worry as much about whether someone is sheepishly hiding behind a computer firing off nasty words, as Google has now flipped on the switch to display your Google+ name and profile picture with all reviews you add to the store. I'm not so sure this is the best thing in the world, 100%, as you don't have an option to turn it off. I like the idea of inviting people to share their thoughts, and mixing in real names and pictures if chosen by the user. That way, people know what reviews they might want to trust over other ones that are anonymous and thus, perhaps shady. The company seems to be choosing quality over quantity, though.

Former Autonomy CEO seeks details from HP board on accounting allegations

If there's anything that Walmart didn't need on Black Friday weekend, it was a jaw-dropping headline about somebody dying in their parking lot after a run-in with a couple of employees. Unfortunately for the big box retailer, that's exactly what happened on early Sunday morning at a store in Lithonia, Georgia.

yadav.singh: Hand and Wrist Pain | - Health and Fitness Media ...

I am often surprised that folks don?t contemplate chiropractic look after hand and wrist pain. We do extra than simply low again and neck pain. We are taught to deal with the spine and most different joints of the physique together with the hand and wrist.

Hand and wrist ache for the sake of this article isn?t about carpal tunnel syndrome. That?s one other topic for an additional day. In addition to which, most carpal tunnel syndromes contain the neck. Hand and wrist pain will be independent of the neck.

What are the a number of the extra common hand and wrist pain cases that a typical chiropractor would treatall For one, overuse or repetitive pressure syndromes that may manifest either as hand/wrist or elbow pain. The typical situations could be sports accidents, falling and catching oneself with the hand prolonged, weight lifting or lifting heavy items (resembling with a recent move to another home). Even repetitive actions such as knitting, crocheting, laptop usage can add to repetitive strain. Massage therapists also are in danger for repetitive strains with the heavy utilization of their arms, forearms and elbows.

Ache alongside the thumb (normally of the dominant hand) is another typical pain syndrome seen by chiropractors. This is often an inflammation of the extensor hallicus longus tendon ? translation: irritation of the tendon that goes to the thumb. This is normally of a power nature. Problem writing, choosing up objects, performing advantageous motor abilities with the thumb may be painful. The joint the place the thumb attaches to the hand is the most commonly degenerative joint within the hand. That tells us we use our thumbs a lot. Over time the damage and tear stress upon that joint makes is vulnerable to degenerative or arthritic changes.

Finger ache reveals up now and then. Usually, the finger does not bend all the way. The ache is normally not disabling however annoying. I had a affected person with such a case. He had low grade finger ache for over 20 years. He thought there was no cure. Simply on a whim he ventured to ask if anything could possibly be finished for it. One treatment and the ache was completely gone and hasn?t returned since.

A typical therapy protocol for hand and wrist ache is in fact chiropractic adjustments. I take advantage of the Activator (hand held gadget) which pinpoints the joint accurately. I also use the ?speeder board? which is like a mini-drop table. This helps to jog loose the joint that perhaps stuck. Mushy tissue work can also be helpful to scale back irritation, break up adhesions, reduce muscle spasm, enhance vascularity to the tissues and most significantly scale back pain. Checking other associated buildings can ferret out contributing causes to the pain. Sometimes, the elbow, shoulder and neck are the same old suspects.

In additional advanced circumstances, testing for lack of power and different orthopedic tests to rule out nerve entrapment syndromes, carpal tunnel syndrome, and thoracic outlet syndrome may be necessary.

The point of this text is to speak up to your chiropractor about any hand or wrist pain that you may be having. You may be surprised.

Boertala.com ? Online Build Own Business Network Your Online ...

Many online business owners and marketers use a variety of tools to make their business successful. Good strategies include maintaining a web site, publishing an ezine, joining affiliate programs, advertising on other people?s ezines, and much, much more. As any good Internet ?guru? will tell you, getting your name and product ?out there? is the most important part of your success. So, the general rule is: Use as many strategies as possible.

What I suggest is that you take this rule one step farther. What I think works best is combining as many of the strategies together, as possible. In other words, when you can, build your own network, using the tools you already have in place. And I?m using the word network, as it relates to networking your online systems ? not in the sense of a prospect or client network, though I have some tips on that, near the end of this article.

So, let?s break down this concept. Suppose you have a web site that promotes a product or service. You probably have a sales letter, some testimonials and a merchant account, so people can buy your product. Now, what I would suggest next, if you don?t already have it, is your own ezine (online magazine, operated by an e-mail autoresponder). You get visitors to subscribe to your ezine, using a pop-up or another type of FREE subscription form on your web site. Again, this may not be new to most people, but here?s another spin on it. In addition to your pop-up or basic sign-up form on your site, why not add a page to your site, with a link on your home page, that does nothing but promote your ezine.

You see, many people pass up your subscription form, because they are afraid of SPAM, or they don?t know enough about your ezine. Will it interest them? Or, will it just bombard them with more advertising?

A separate page can explain exactly what the ezine does, promote articles that you have in it, even give a sample issue, so prospects can see what they are getting. Be sure to have several subscription forms on this page between sections of your text, so people have plenty of opportunity to subscribe. Also, be sure that visitors are linked back to your home page, once they?ve subscribed, so they get back to looking at your product. Any good autoresponder will have this feature, which is crucial, because although you desperately want people signing up for your ezine, you also want them to read your sales letter and, hopefully, buy your product.

Make sure your ezine articles always link back to your web site, so you are constantly promoting yourself. After all, this is really what ezines are for.

Another part of good online networking is to set up affiliate programming, in a similar fashion to the aforementioned ezine promotion. That is, instead of just offering your own product as an affiliate program, set up a separate page on your web site for affiliate programs you use. So, you might have a link on your home/sales page called ?Other Great Products.? Obviously, you can use your own creativity for this title.

This link will take visitors to a site that promotes other products, for which you gain a commission as an affiliate. If you are unfamiliar with affiliate programs, visit ClickBank, the largest free affiliate program on the Internet. Most Internet marketers only offer their own product to people, who want to join affiliate programs, or they may offer just one other related product, with a link on their home page.

Plus, don?t forget any other web sites of your own. Always be sure to link to them on all of your URLs and in your ezine articles. The key to building your own online network is to be sure you have promotional pages for all of your products and affiliates on your web sites and to link everything together. Remember, you want every visitor on your e-mail list, and you always want them landing back on your promotional pages.

One final thought. Promoting your business network offline is also critical to your success. Some basic techniques I use are:

? URL on return address stickers

? Business cards with ezine address and web site

? Fliers at community businesses and public places (be sure your community knows you above all others)

? Free seminars in regional communities, discussing my topic (remember, you don?t need to make money here ? all you want is to get your name out there and to get e-mail addresses, so you can add them to your ezine list)

? Teach a class at a community college (get more e-mail addresses)

? Give free information away at community festivals, like Home Days

? Advertise in your local Money Saver magazines. It?s cheap, and it reaches tens of thousands of people, who love cheap or free stuff.

? Anything else you can think of that get people to your site and to your ezine

Stay positive. Building a network takes time and hard work, but it?s well worth it in the end.

NC State fires O'Brien after 6 seasons

(AP) ? North Carolina State has fired football coach Tom O'Brien after six seasons, four of which were good enough to get the Wolfpack into a bowl but none that could get them to the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game.

Athletic director Debbie Yow made the announcement Sunday, one day after the Wolfpack finished a 7-5 regular season with a win over Boston College. During a news conference, Yow said she met with O'Brien on Friday to discuss the future of the program, then notified him of her decision Sunday before meeting with the coaching staff and players.

"I told them it's really fairly simple," Yow said. "Coach O'Brien and I agree on the goal of becoming a top-25 program. We just don't agree on what it takes to do that, how to get there."

O'Brien went 40-35 after coming to Raleigh from BC following the 2006 season. He took the Wolfpack to three bowl games, but won't coach in a fourth when N.C. State receives its bid next week. Yow said O'Brien's buyout would be $1.2 million over four years.

N.C. State says offensive coordinator Dana Bible will be the interim coach for the bowl game. All other assistants are staying to continue bowl preparations.

"I appreciate the opportunity to have coached at North Carolina State University and I feel that the program is in a better place now than when I started," O'Brien said in a statement issued by the school.

The 64-year-old O'Brien, who went 75-45 in 10 seasons at BC with eight consecutive bowl berths before coming here, said at his December 2006 hiring that it was "N.C. State or bust for me."

In his statement Sunday, O'Brien said he is looking "forward to life after football."

His teams were just 22-26 in ACC play and finished above .500 in the league just once, going 5-3 in 2010. He was 1-14 in Atlantic Division road games.

Only three ACC teams ? No. 13 Florida State (10-2), No. 15 Clemson (10-2) and rival North Carolina (8-4) ? had better overall records this season than the Wolfpack, who were 4-4 in the league.

That was good for third in the Atlantic Division behind Florida State and Clemson ? exactly where they were picked in the preseason poll.

But consistency was a problem all season.

They opened with a 14-point loss to a Tennessee team that went on to finish 5-7. They blew a late 10-point lead and allowed an ACC-record 566 yards passing in a loss at Miami. They were routed at home 33-6 by a last-place Virginia team that had lost six straight and they gave up 62 points in a loss at Clemson.

Not even a thrilling upset of then-No. 3 Florida State on Oct. 6 could save O'Brien's job.

O'Brien also faced some questions in the spring of 2011, when he parted ways with three-year starting quarterback Russell Wilson, who was attempting to play both minor-league baseball and football at the high FBS level.

Wilson transferred to Wisconsin for his senior season, led the Badgers to the Rose Bowl and wound up winning the job with the Seattle Seahawks.

O'Brien's choice certainly appeared justified when Mike Glennon ? who took over for Wilson ? led the ACC in passing this season, averaging 304 yards.

The school says a national search for O'Brien's replacement will begin immediately.

News | My open source cure for brain cancer | Health Updates ...

Editor?s note: Salvatore Iaconesi is a 39-year-old TED fellow and the artist and technologist behind Art is Open Source. He teaches digital design at La Sapienza University of Rome. His medical records are publicly available at artisopensource.net/cure. Iaconesi spoke in September at TEDx Transmedia, an independently organized event in Rome. TED is a nonprofit organization dedicated to ?Ideas worth spreading? which it makes available through talks posted on its website.

(CNN) ? I was recently diagnosed with brain cancer.

This was shocking news. Sitting across from a doctor holding a clinical folder with your name on it, and hearing him say the words ?low-grade glioma,? ?language and comprehension areas of your brain,? ?surgery? and ?chemotherapy? is a very weird experience.

My first idea was to seek other opinions. Maybe this hospital is wrong. Maybe there are other places that wouldn?t need to do surgery. Maybe there is a laser, a chemical, an ancient tradition, a shaman, a scientist, a nanorobot.

I felt incomplete about the way that the medical system was handling my situation.

Stay up to date on the latest opinion, analysis and conversations through social media. Join us at Facebook/CNNOpinion and follow us @CNNOpinion on Twitter. We welcome your ideas and comments.

Being ?diseased? is like a state of suspended life. Can I work? Have fun? Be creative? Not really.

When you are declared ?diseased,? you become a set of medical records, therapy, dosages, exam dates. It?s as if you disappear, replaced by your disease.

I immediately asked for my clinical records in digital format, and left the hospital.

TED.com: A new understanding of cancer

My main objective ? the best thing I felt that I could do ? was to make my digital information available on the Internet, in formats that would allow people of multiple cultures, skills, professions and inclinations to access, use, recombine and redistribute it.

5-time cancer survivor pays it forward

Fighting cancer with fashion

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month

Can vitamins help fight off cancer?

Why would I want them to access this information?

To help me find the best cure for myself, and in the process to produce substantial social change by redefining the word ?cure.?

But when I went home to publish my medical records, all I could do was send them to specialized professionals, either by duplicating the CDs and mailing them or by copying their closed format and uploading them somewhere.

I had no direct access to my own information, since I use Linux and OSX rather than the files? Windows-based viewer. As a software engineer, I found software and programming tools to hack the files and make them open ? but a nontechnical person would have difficulty making use of their own medical data.

I needed, first of all, something which I could easily share, maybe allowing people to open it from their browsers, or even from their smartphones.

TED.com: New strategy in war on cancer

So I opened up my medical records and converted the data into multiple formats: spreadsheets, databases, metadata files in XML and video, image and sound files. And I published them on The Cure.

The responses have been incredible. More than 200,000 people have visited the site and many have provided videos, poems, medical opinions, suggestions of alternative cures or lifestyles, personal stories of success or, sadly, failures ? and simply the statement, ?I am here.? Among them were more than 90 doctors and researchers who offered information and support.

The geneticist and TED fellow Jimmy Lin has offered to sequence the genome of my tumor after surgery ? in an open-source platform, of course. And the Italian parliament has been debating a motion to make all patients? medical records more open and accessible, which would be amazing progress in my country.

Within one day I also heard from two different doctors, who recommended similar kinds of surgery. The first version is ?awake surgery,? which monitors the brain in real time as different parts are touched. The second is a variation in which electrodes are placed on the brain during surgery, and then a brain map is produced (with the patient awake) and used during a second surgery (with the patient fully unconscious).

TED.com: Your genes are not your fate

Existing portals and websites that allow patients and ex-patients to exchange stories and opinions already exist. But we?re talking about something different.

I see a cure as a dynamic process, in which multiple doctors, professionals, artists, scientists and others join as a society ? to converse, support each other, be open to various contributions and shape solutions that merge humanity, technology, technique, philosophy and art. Creativity and ?normal life? become part of the process and bring ?diseased? people back to life.

To me, a true cure is complete, is human, and has dignity. And it never ends.

Such a cure is a dialogue in which ?experts? maintain their status ? and in fact, an enormous thank you goes out to all the extremely qualified professionals who are constantly responding to my calls ? but the whole process opens up to possibility.

TED.com: The potential of regenerative medicine

And this is exactly what is happening: We are creating a cure by uniting the contributions of surgeons, homeopaths, oncologists, Chinese doctors, nutritionists and spiritual healers. The active participation of everyone involved ? both experts and ex-patients ? is naturally filtering out any damaging suggestion which might be proposed.

To achieve this kind of cure, we must be open to strategies from different cultures and philosophical orientations. And we must embrace a wider, more profound discourse about the ways in which information circulates digitally.

For now, I?m following a complex strategy developed with the help of a series of doctors and experts who responded to my open-source cure site and have suggested a variety of therapies to deal with the disease.

As of now, my cancer growth has stopped. We are waiting for the next test results to decide when and if to proceed to surgery.

How can you be involved? Tell us about excellent techniques and technologies from around the world that can effectively confront low-grade glioma. We have explored many opinions in Italy and Europe, but fewer outside.

Share your stories and experiences, the solutions you have found, the fraud you have encountered.

Send us videos, poems, images, audio or text that you see as relevant to a scenario in which art and creativity can help form a complete and ongoing cure.

Or tell us, ?I am here!? ? alive and connected, ready to support a fellow human being.

LSU Football: Jarvis Landry, No. 8 Tigers Hold Off Arkansas 20-13

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. ? Even record-setting performances by Tyler Wilson and Cobi Hamilton weren't enough for Arkansas to close out its disappointing season with a win.

The Razorbacks rallied in the second half on Friday, but their efforts fell short in a 20-13 loss to No. 8 LSU.

Wilson was 31 of 52 passing for the Razorbacks (4-8, 2-6 Southeastern Conference) whose fall from preseason top 10 is now complete. The senior set the school record for career passing yards in the loss, while Hamilton set the school record for receptions in a career with 175.

The records were a bright spot in an otherwise dismal season for a Razorbacks team that struggled mightily following the April firing of former coach Bobby Petrino. Arkansas was 21-5 the last two seasons and entered the season with SEC and national championship expectations, but it was eliminated from the bowl picture following last week's loss at Mississippi State.

"We kind of stuck together (through) all the adversity," Hamilton said. "We're still brothers. We're still the same 2012 team that everybody had high expectations for. But we just stuck together."

Jarvis Landry, meanwhile, helped keep LSU's SEC championship hopes in reach with the win.

Now the receiver and the rest of the No. 8 Tigers (10-2, 6-2 Southeastern Conference) must sit back and wait while their next destination ? perhaps next weekend's SEC championship game ? is played out elsewhere.

Landry's spectacular, reaching, one-handed touchdown catch late in the first half helped LSU take the early lead on its way to holding off the reeling Razorbacks. It marked the sixth time in eight seasons that the Tigers have reached double-digit wins under coach Les Miles.

LSU must now hope for an Alabama loss to Auburn (not likely) and Texas A&M victory against Missouri (very possible) on Saturday in order to win the SEC West and earn a trip to Atlanta. Even without a division crown, the Tigers could still get an at-large bid to the BCS.

"We'll take the next day and a half or so and watch TV tomorrow and be excited about it, and move forward and see how things go," Miles said.

Zach Mettenberger passed for 217 yards and hooked up with Landry for the play of the day with 1:12 left in the first half to put LSU up 10-0. The Tigers were outgained 462-306 in total yardage, but they were able to hold off record-setting performances by Arkansas quarterback Wilson and Hamilton.

The Tigers took at 17-3 lead early in the third quarter after a 1-yard touchdown run by Jeremy Hill, who finished with 77 yards rushing on 18 carries. The touchdown followed an 86-yard kickoff return by Michael Ford to the Arkansas 9.

It also appeared to be the clincher for LSU, though the Razorbacks rallied behind the combination of Wilson and Hamilton.

Wilson passed former Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallet's mark of 7,493 yards passing in the second quarter, finishing with 359 yards in the game and 7,765 yards for his career, and his 28-yard touchdown pass to freshman Mekale McKay in the third quarter closed the LSU lead to 17-10.

After forcing a Tigers' punt, the Razorbacks used a key fourth-and-1 conversion to set up another scoring opportunity. Wilson found Jonathan Williams for a 37-yard completion on the fourth down at midfield, helping to set up a second-and-goal at the LSU 1.

Arkansas was unable, however, to find the end zone on its next two plays. Interim coach John L. Smith then elected to kick a 17-yard field goal, which backup kicker John Henson converted to close the Tigers' lead to 17-13.

The Razorbacks never did find the end zone again, bringing a likely end to the Arkansas career of Smith ? who was signed to a 10-month contract following Petrino's firing.

"That's the right call," Smith said of the field goal attempt. "I mean, you have to score twice to win it, don't you? At least, I think you had to score twice to win it unless my math was wrong. So do you take it there? You have to take the sure points and then come back you have to score again anyway. So that was the thought, and I think that's the right call."

The Razorbacks had one final chance in the closing seconds, but Wilson's second-down attempt from the LSU 18 was over the head of McKay as time expired.

LSU's final score came on a 27-yard field goal by Drew Alleman with 1:26 remaining, giving it a 20-13 lead. The score came after a key 47-yard third-down completion from Mettenberger to Odell Beckham, who finished with eight catches for 112 yards.

The Tigers led 10-0 at halftime in their first game in Fayetteville since 1992. They did so despite gaining the same 165 yards of total offense as the Razorbacks, whose season-long series of miscues continued in the half.

Arkansas, next to last in the SEC in red-zone offense, squandered three scoring opportunities in the half. Dennis Johnson fumbled near the LSU goal line on the game's opening drive, and kicker Zach Hocker misfired on a pair of field goal attempts before being benched in favor of Henson in the second half.

LSU's first touchdown came late in the first half when Mettenberger found Landry in the back of the end zone for a 22-yard touchdown. Landry had to reach back over his wrong shoulder to stretch out and snare the ball with his right hand, landing well in bounds.

"I felt that the throw kind of kept me in bounds," Landry said. "I felt that if he had led me any, there was a possibility I could have been out of bounds.

"It's just one of those throws where Zach trusted me, and I just went up and made it."

Hamilton finished with 10 catches for 98 yards in his final game at Arkansas, finishing his career with 175 catches. His record broke the former mark of 168 catches, set last year by Minnesota Vikings' rookie Jarius Wright.

Mass. shoppers line up in cold to snag bargains

WATERTOWN, Mass. (AP) ? Thousands of Black Friday shoppers, many squeezed by economic uncertainties, lined up in freezing overnight temperatures or got up early to snag the best bargains to kick off the holiday shopping season in Massachusetts.

With high unemployment, a slow economic recovery and a looming "fiscal cliff," many residents said they're shopping smarter this year, sniffing out deals online and doing a lot more comparison shopping. Others complained about shops opening on Thanksgiving, infringing on family time and forcing retail workers to work on a holiday.

Kala Gurung looked happy and satisfied as she walked out of Best Buy at the Watertown Mall on Friday, accompanied by her 6-year-old son, Adrian. She bought phones, and Adrian will soon get an iPad.

Gurung, who works at a private consultancy firm, said she plans to spend just over $500 on holiday shopping, slightly more than what she spent last year.

"No, we'd definitely not go over the budget because of the economic situation, but we'll be buying a little bit more," the 31-year-old Watertown resident said.

Joe Russell was hunting for a great deal on a large flat-screen TV and went to the Best Buy store in Watertown shortly after midnight Friday, but the long line of shoppers gunning for door-buster promotions deterred him from braving the cold. He returned to the store after sunrise and got a different TV for "a decent price."

"This is the earliest I've ever shopped. Usually I wait until two weeks before Christmas then I go," Russell said.

Russell isn't setting a budget for this year's shopping. "I really want to go with the flow there. If I can get it, I get it ? I get some overtime coming up, so I'm gonna kind of put that away" for holiday shopping, he said.

The flat-screen TV he just bought, he said, is the most expensive item he'll probably buy this year.

"The money is tight these days. You gotta try to get the deals you can," he said.

Still, some shoppers were unhappy that Black Friday openings were turning Thanksgiving into Super Thursday.

Lizzy Casanave, who's in her 40s, and her mother, Anne Linn, who's in her 60s, said that, unlike previous years, they didn't go out to grab the best bargains because retailers started offering those on Thanksgiving night.

"And we refuse to shop on Thanksgiving Day," said Casanave, an Arlington resident. "We don't like people making people go to work on Thanksgiving Day, so we banned that, decided to come this morning ? but we didn't get up as early as usual because we knew that a lot of the bargains will probably be gone."

Spector, an author from Newton, shared the sentiment from the Arsenal Mall in Watertown.

"Get rid of Black Thursday. Don't do any shopping on Thanksgiving. It's terrible," she said.

The 48-year-old Spector plans to spend up to $500, including on designer handbags for her two daughters.

"I did much more online shopping than I ever expected to do," especially compared to last year, she said.

"It was much easier. I've really stayed away from doing online shopping, but everybody talks about it, and I found myself to be really one of those ? it saves time, money, gas, energy. You just point and click and make your purchase," she said.

The shopping season stretching to December historically accounts for about 19.5 percent of annual retail sales, with some stores seeing 25 to 40 percent of their sales and profits during the period, Retailer Association of Massachusetts President Jon Hurst said.

He said the group is forecasting a 3.5 percent increase in retail sales during the holiday season when compared with last year. The two-month season generates about $14 billion. Consumer spending accounts for about 70 percent of the national economy and Massachusetts tracks that figure, Hurst said.

"It is important that our consumers understand that retail supplies about 17 percent of all jobs in Massachusetts and ... we hope that they remember the importance of local shopping and the importance of the Main Street and the importance of keeping local jobs in local stores," Hurst said.
