BBC - Blogs - Wales - Baby raves, babble and theatre for toddlers at ...

Cardiff's Sherman Cymru theatre is playing host to a 10-day arts festival later this month aimed at families and children, and raving is on the agenda.

But this time the only ones holding the glo-sticks and dummies are likely to be the babies and toddlers as they lead their parents and grandparents in what is described by organisers as a "music and dance sensation".

The child-sized rave will see the Sherman transformed with DJ, lighting, projections and sensory toys. But before you start to worry about things getting out of hand and scaring off the crowds with your rusty dance moves, there will be so-called "dance facilitators" on hand to help.

The idea is that both parents and children enjoy an "exploration of movement and rhythm", so perhaps your slightly less gainly version of the caterpillar will not be too out of place.

But if raving isn't your baby's thing, Replay Theatre is putting on several productions of Babble, a show aimed at 0-18-month-olds which has been developed with the help of nurseries.

It uses live voices, music by award-winning composer David Goodall and video to create a virtual wonderland for babies and their parents, all taking place inside the theatre company's Bubble ? a portable indoor performance space.

The festival has been organised as part of the venue's ongoing commitment to showcasing the very best in young people's theatre and will also feature Luna, a toddler show from the award-winning Theatr Iolo and Theatr Hullabaloo.

Luna is aimed at 2-5-year-olds and has been created by Theatr Iolo's early years' director Sarah Argent. It is described as "a lyrical, musical theatre experience about friendship, the moon and being brave in the dark."

But there are also shows for those a little older and their families as well as schools.

For the over-eights, Theatr Iolo has joined forces with Bristol Old Vic and Bath's the egg to present two plays under the title Savage Children. The first is Wild Girl, the tale of a girl who emerges from the woods and explores her life living in the wild, while the second is Mirad, a Boy from Bosnia, which is aimed at over-11s and explores the impact of war on children.

In the Welsh language for children aged 3-7, Arad Goch will be performing Ble Mae'r Dail yn Hedfan? (Where the Leaves Blow) the musical and comical adventure of a woman who collects leaves and natural things to decorate her new home.

As well as storytelling events there will be an aerial show and circus performance from Pirates of the Carabina which is suitable for ages 6+ and grownups.

On top of the packed programme of theatre shows for children, there will also be activities in the foyer throughout the week and professional development workshops with talks.

The festival runs from Wednesday 24 April to Saturday 5 May 2013. Further information can be found at shermancymru.co.uk or call 029 2064 6900.
