(AP) ? An ex-Marine wearing military clothing opened fire at a New Jersey supermarket early Friday, killing two of his co-workers and himself as other terrified store employees hid in the back, authorities said.

The 23-year-old man left his shift at a Pathmark store in Old Bridge Township around 3:30 a.m. and returned a half-hour later to the closed store with a handgun and an AK-47 assault rifle, Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan said. About 12 to 14 workers were still there.

The man fired at least 16 rounds from the rifle at the first workers he saw, killing 18-year-old Christina LoBrutto and a 24-year-old Bryan Breen as other workers hid, officials said.

"I do not believe that they were specifically targeted. I believe everybody in the store was a target," said Kaplan.

The gunman then killed himself, said Kaplan.

He did not release the suspect's name, but a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation identified him as Terence Tyler, an ex-Marine who was discharged in 2010. The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because his agency is not in charge of the investigation.

Tyler, an infantryman from Brooklyn, never served overseas, said Marine spokeswoman Capt. Kendra Motz. She wouldn't comment on the circumstances of his discharge.

At the top of a Facebook page for a Terence Tyler who says he served in the Marines the same dates as the shooter has this slogan: "Be optimistic. All the people you hate are going to eventually die."

Tyler moved to an apartment near the Pathmark earlier this summer, neighbors said. Co-workers said he had been only working at the store for a few weeks.

Pathmark worker Miranda Miranda said she steered clear of Tyler. "The way he looked at me, he gave me an uneasy vibe," she said.

Miranda had regularly worked the overnight shift on Thursday but said LoBrutto agreed to take over the shift for her a few weeks ago.

"Right now, all I know is what keeps coming into my mind," she said. "That could've been me."

Tyler spent the July 4 weekend drinking at Jersey shore bars with Manase Acheantong, who said Tyler was his friend's cousin.

"We went out. We had drinks. He was a normal kid. He didn't start no fights. He didn't seem crazy," said Acheantong, 25, of Old Bridge.

John Niccollai, president of a foodworkers union that represents some store employees, said Pathmark officials and workers told him the gunman wore military clothing and had just punched out for the night before coming back into the store and opening fire.

Many of the employees escaped gunfire, Niccollai said, when an assistant manager, "who I would view as a hero," helped many workers to get out of the store through the back door.

Kaplan and police walked through the shooting scene at the supermarket Friday morning, with two long windows in the front completely shot through. Police kept onlookers away; a number of vehicles were in the parking lot outside, along with police cars.

The store and its parking lot were closed.

A spokeswoman for Pathmark's parent company, Montvale-based Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. said Friday the company is "deeply saddened" by the shooting and is cooperating with investigators.

"We express our deepest sympathies to the families of the victims and our appreciation to local law enforcement," spokeswoman Mary Connor said.

Old Bridge is a bedroom community of about 65,000 just across the Raritan Bay from New York City's Staten Island.

A vigil was planned Friday at Old Bridge School for LoBrutto and Breen, who both graduated from the school. LoBrutto, who was a horn player in the school band, graduated this year, Schools Superintendent Timothy Brennan said. Breen graduated in 2006.

Sixteen-year-old Jessica Ruano knew Christina from school. "She was a really bubbly girl," Ruano said. "She was silly. She was sweet."

Clean vs Dirty Energy: Learning From India's Great Blackout

/pollution/article/44877

India is a fast-developing nation with a population of 1.2 billion people, and by 2030 will likely be the most-populous in the world. India's disparities and inequalities are staggering, with 32.7 percent of the population living on $1.25 per day. As the country continues to grow, the impacts on its citizens and the environment become more severe.

Take energy, for example. Over 400 million Indians lack access to the modern electrical grid. Approximately 70 percent of India's power comes from coal and it has the world's fifth-largest coal reserves. India is the third-largest coal producer in the world, but also the third-largest importer. Earlier this year, the IMF reported that coal causes about 70,000 premature deaths every year in India. The country has the worst air pollution in the entire world. Continued dependence on coal is only going to exacerbate health problems.

What happens when the electric grid fails and nearly 700 million Indians are left in the dark, as happened in early August when a massive power failure occurred? Hopefully an assessment of how best to address the power needs of the sub-continent. This is a pivotal moment. India can take the initiative and invest more in efficiency and renewable energy/off-grid alternatives, beginning a transition off of coal, or it could continue to rely on the dirtiest of fossil fuels, harming communities and the environment alike.

The Indian government does have an ambitious plan for increasing solar energy. In 2008, the government launched the National Solar Mission, which calls for generating 12.5 percent of India?s total electricity, or 20 gigawatts (GW), from renewable resources by 2020. It was reported last month that the country crossed the 1 GW mark in solar photovoltaic power.

With HA, Size Matters

Normal, healthy synovial fluid contains hyaluronan (HA) with a molecular weight of 2-3 million daltons (MDa). This polymer of d-glucuronic acid and n-acetyl-d-glucosamine can be thousands of disaccharide units in length.

This very large compound traps up to 1,000 times its own weight in water1 contributing to the cushioning and lubricating properties of synovial HA with the larger sized molecules associated with different physiologic effects than smaller HA molecules.2,3 This is important since both the concentration and the molecular weight of HA decreases in inflamed joints.4,5
Smaller molecular weight HA is not the same as the normal size molecule.3 As the molecular weight decreases, fluid viscosity decreases.6 Based on studies of intra-articular injections of HA in humans and rats, the higher molecular weight HA molecules can relieve pain.7,8,9 Larger molecules are associated with greater and longer-lasting pain reduction in rats.10
This suggests that the reduced HA concentration and molecular weight contributes to or fails to ameliorate joint pain. The smaller HA molecules are less beneficial to cartilage elasticity, as well.11 This may explain subsequent cartilage damage in inflamed joints.

Hundreds of studies have examined the physiologic roles of HA and found HA involved in anti-inflammation, anti-oxidation, immune cell activation in addition to joint lubrication, cartilage support and pain control.3 Molecular weight affects HA biological activity in all of these roles. The anti-inflammatory character changes to one that is pro-inflammatory as size decreases.12 Smaller sized molecules participate in the activation of eosinophils.13 Larger molecules suppress cytokine production in mice.14,15

Hyaluronan physiologic function varies with molecular weight. Intra-articular injection of 1.5 MDa in canine joints that normally contain 2-3 MDa HA failed to provide benefit.4 This is consistent with studies in rabbits showing that the benefit is less when HA replacement is done with a molecular weight below that of the native HA.16

Similar studies in humans with existing products for intra-articular injection found differing efficacies on a variety of parameters; molecular weight varied among the products.17 Not all HA is the same.17,18

Summary
High molecular weight HA is associated with the beneficial roles that we expect in a healthy joint, so it is important to support the synovial HA in a stressed joint with a molecular weight that matches native HA: 2 to 3 MDa.
When it comes to HA - Bigger IS better!

Adele Shoots Down Wedding Rumors: 'I'm Not Married'

One day after the rumor mill was spinning with the chatter that Adele had married her beau and baby daddy, Simon Konecki, the "Rumor Has It" singer is clearing the air: She is not married.

She took to Twitter on Thursday, simply sharing with her followers, "I'm not married...Zzzzzzz."

The rumor had been prompted by reported photos of the expectant singer wearing a wedding band. According to Life & Style magazine, the multiple Grammy winner was snapped with her growing baby bump while out in London recently, the first time since she announced her pregnancy earlier this summer. An eyewitness noted that she was sporting a "pregnancy glow" as well as a gold wedding band on her ring finger.

"Adele and Simon managed to keep the baby news a secret for so long that there are rumors they've already gotten married, too," an inside source said. "She's an old-fashioned girl and can't wait to be part of a family unit. She just wants to focus on the baby and the man she loves."

The singer announced her pregnancy back in June and has maintained a relatively low profile since. In July, there had been speciation that she will give birth in September, though that was never confirmed.

Adele has been dating Konecki since they met in the summer of last year. The fellow Brit is a former financier and co-founder of the U.K. bottled-water company Life Water. He also heads the company's charitable operative, Drop4Drop, which works to bring clean water to developing countries.

Did you fall for the marriage rumors? Let us know in the comments!

Mississippi River flows backwards due to Isaac

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Strong winds and storm surge from Hurricane Isaac's landfall forced the Mississippi River to flow backwards for nearly 24 hours on Tuesday, August 28. The USGS streamgage at Belle Chasse, Louisiana, showed the Mississippi River flowing upstream at 182,000 cubic feet per second, surging to 10 feet above than its previous height. Average flow for the Mississippi River at Belle Chase is about 125,000 cfs towards the Gulf of Mexico.

Although it doesn't happen often, hurricanes can cause coastal rivers to reverse flow. Between the extremely strong winds and the massive waves of water pushed by those winds, rivers at regular or low flow are forced backwards until either the normal river-flow or the elevation of the land stop the inflow.

As Hurricane Isaac pushes further inland, it is causing storm surge in the Mississippi River as far north as Baton Rouge, where the river has crested at 8 feet above its prior height.

"This reversal of flow of the mighty Mississippi is but one measure of the extreme force of Isaac," said USGS Director Marcia McNutt. "While such events are ephemeral, they are yet another reminder of why we need to respect hurricane warnings."

When Hurricane Katrina came ashore in 2005, the Mississippi River also reversed flow, cresting at 13 feet above its previous level, with Baton Rouge reaching 9 feet above its previous stage as well.

Another phenomenon that USGS streamgages have recorded as Hurricane Isaac moves inland is that periodically, coastal rivers in Louisiana have lost height, only to gain it back again soon after. This rising and falling of the rivers is a common occurrence during hurricanes and is caused by the spiral nature of these storms.

As the winds sweep to the southwest, they force water out of the rivers, lowering their height. However, once the winds complete their turn to the southwest, they begin back to the northeast, allowing the storm surge to raise the river levels.

These oddities in river behavior are recorded in real-time by USGS' extensive network of streamgages, located through Louisiana and the rest of the country. These streamgages, which are installed along rivers and streams, record data like streamflow, river height, and, in some cases, even water chemistry.

Many transmit their data in real-time to satellites, updating with new information every 15 minutes. This wealth of data allows USGS scientists, emergency managers and responders, and even the general public to have accurate and up-to-date knowledge of what the rivers and streams in their areas are doing. This data is particularly critical during massive flooding events like Hurricane Isaac.

In fact, anyone can sign up to receive notices from USGS streamgages when waters are rising in nearby rivers and streams through a program called WaterAlert (http://water.usgs.gov/wateralert/). It is a free service that allows members of the public to receive notifications about water levels at any of over 7,000 USGS real-time streamgages around the country. Learn more about how to sign up at: http://www.usgs.gov/newsroom/article.asp?from=rss&ID=2919#.UD5HrVI6W7w .

All USGS streamgage information is housed online (http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/rt). For Hurricane Isaac, USGS has compiled a list of all streamgages in affected areas (http://water.usgs.gov/floods/events/2012/isaac/StormTideAndRDG.html).

UK's Cameron challenged to act on Heathrow Airport

LONDON (AP) ? Prime Minister David Cameron is facing heat from his own Conservative party over the subject of building a third runway for London's beleaguered Heathrow Airport.

"The prime minister must ask himself whether he is man or mouse," lawmaker Tim Yeo wrote in The Daily Telegraph, a Conservative-supporting newspaper that splashed the question in a front-page headline.

Tuesday's blast was the rudest shot yet in a campaign by airlines, business groups and unions demanding that Cameron ditch his opposition to a third runway at Heathrow, Europe's busiest airport, which serves 70 million passengers a year.

Business groups back the third runway as job-creating economic boost for the flat-lining British economy. There are also worries that Heathrow is losing ground against competitors such as Frankfurt airport and Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris.

Opposition to the third runway was Cameron's initiative four years ago as he worked to make his party appear more sensitive to environmental issues. Justine Greening, Cameron's transport secretary, supports her constituents in west London in opposing another runway.

Greening's department is setting long-term goals for preserving London's status as an aviation hub. But conclusions won't be published until March and only then would the department look at specific moves to increase capacity.

The recent pressure on Cameron is partly in anticipation of a shuffle of Cabinet positions. Dismissing Greening, say some Conservatives, would be a strong signal that the third runway project is back on.

"Does he want to be another Harold Macmillan (prime minister 1957-1963), presiding over a dignified slide towards insignificance? Or is there somewhere in his heart ... a trace of (Margaret) Thatcher, determined to reverse the direction of our ship?" Yeo wrote in his op-ed piece.

Cameron's office said the prime minister would keep his promise to oppose another runway during his coalition government with the Liberal Democrats, which is due to end in 2015.

"We don't see the argument for a third runway," a spokeswoman for Cameron said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Still, the Institute of Directors, representing 38,000 directors of U.K. businesses, weighed in to support Yeo.

"There is no doubt that we need more airport capacity, and the longer the government delays deciding where it will be, the more chances for trade we will miss," said Simon Walker, the Institute's director general.

British Airways, the biggest tenant at Heathrow, has been equally forceful in pressing Cameron to change direction.

"I don't believe this government has the political will to address the issues," Willie Walsh, chief executive of International Airlines Group, BA's owner, said last month.

"David Cameron seems a lot happier clapping and cheering for (Olympic) gold medals than dealing with tough, long-term economic challenges," Walsh told the Financial Times.

London Mayor Boris Johnson, a potential rival to Cameron, wants to build an entirely new airport ? dubbed "Boris Island" ? east of London near the mouth of the River Thames.

"Heathrow is fundamentally not the place" for expansion, he has said.

Heathrow, the hub of long-haul flights, is operating at capacity, with 1,300 landings and takeoffs every day. Whatever happens, airlines could not expect any additional capacity at Heathrow or any other London airport before 2020.

Gordon Brown's Labour government approved a third runway for Heathrow in 2009, in the face of loud opposition from locals.

Cameron canceled the project when he formed a coalition government following the 2010 election. Labour's new leader, Ed Miliband, has reversed his party's support for a third runway as well.

A study published by the British Chambers of Commerce earlier this year claimed that a third runway would add 30 billion pounds ($48 billion) a year to the U.K. economy, and that every year of delay cost the nation about 1 billion pounds ($1.6 billion).

Navigating the Minefield of the Internal Revenue Code | Big Fat ...

The Federal Tax Code is riddled with landmines. These ?traps for the unwary? are a major source of the complexity about which American businesses complain. One such trap is illustrated by a recent case involving the timing of Federal tax deductions for California state income taxes paid by Wells Fargo bank.

Accrual method taxpayers normally deduct a liability (such as a state income tax) in the year in which the ?all-events test? is met. That test requires that (1) all the events that establish the fact of a liability have occurred, and (2) the amount of that liability is determinable with reasonable accuracy. In most cases, actual payment meets the all-events test.

California?s income tax is actually a tax on the privilege of conducting business in the state. The tax must be paid on Year 1 income for the privilege of conducting business in the state in Year 2. Under current law, the event that fixes the Year 1 tax liability is the actual Year 1 tax liability and the payment of the tax. So a corporation could reasonably conclude that the Year 1 taxes would accrue and would, therefore, be deductible for Federal income tax purposes in Year 1.

Before 1972, however, California law provided that the Year 1 tax could be reduced if and to the extent that the taxpayer did not conduct business in California in Year 2, so the event that fixed the liability and determined its amount was the conduct of business in Year 2. This is important because an arcane provision in the Federal Tax Code?specifically, section 461(d)?provides that if a state changes its law after 1960 and, as a result of that change, moves up the accrual date for the payment of taxes, then the change in state law is ignored for Federal tax law purposes. Notwithstanding that a corporation paid Year 1 income tax in Year 1 (for example, through estimated payments), section 461(d) requires that a corporation cannot deduct its California income tax on its Federal return until Year 2.

As is often the case with what appears at first blush to be a silly rule, there was reason in Congress? madness in enacting section 461(d) in 1960. It appears that several states had changed their lien date for the imposition of property taxes?and, thus, the accrual date for the taxes?from January to December of the previous year to provide taxpayers with an extra accrual date. Congress thought that this would improperly allow a taxpayer to deduct the same payment twice, and justifiably sought to make that impossible. The language that Congress used, however, was broad enough to catch the subsequent change in California income tax law.

This example illustrates why it is so dangerous to navigate the Internal Revenue Code unaided. Well-prepared taxpayers should arm themselves with the latest detection equipment in the form of expert guides so that they can complete their journey safely.

Any tax advice contained herein was not intended or written to be used, and it cannot be used by any taxpayer, for the purpose of avoiding U.S. federal, state, or local tax penalties. You should consult with your professional tax advisor to discuss the potential application of this subject matter to your particular facts and circumstances.

NYC garbage man sifts through tons of trash to find woman?s wedding ring

Losing a wedding ring can move folks to great feats. (Isaac Brekken/Getty Images)The saying "one man's trash is another man's treasure," took on a near literal meaning after a New York City garbage man sifted through tons of trash to find one woman's missing wedding ring.

But how did an expensive wedding ring end up in a trash pile? The New York Daily News reports that Danielle Carroll lost her ring, which was already a replacement for an earlier misplaced wedding ring, while at work. The 45-year-old teacher says she and her young students were using a "slippery hand cleaner" which must have caused her ring to slide off into a trash bag.

"I was so busy that day and cleaning my hands constantly that I didn't notice I had lost the ring," she told the paper.

Carroll tells the paper she awoke at 3:30 a.m., suddenly realizing the ring was missing. She and her husband raced outside to retrieve it from the trash but the NYC Parks Department had already picked up the garbage.

Carroll left a note on a nearby Parks Department garbage truck, which read, 'Hello, I believe my wedding ring is in this truck. It is in a bag that was put in a trash bag in the park at the end of the day, Sunday. It is 5AM and I came down to the park to look for it and then saw this truck with trash in it. Please call me to tell me where this truck is going and I will come ASAP."

NYC Parks Department employee Gary Gaddist read the note and decided to intervene. He called Carroll and told her he would look for the ring, though he noted, "It really was like looking for a needle in a haystack."

But somehow the 42-year-old Gaddist located the trash bag amid several tons of garbage at Randalls Island.

"This guy did something he didn't have to do, and I find that amazing,' Carroll told the paper after Gaddist called with the surprising good news.

For his part, Gaddist said he decided to help because he could tell the couple were in love.

"It was a love thing," he said.

BoSox send Gonzalez, Beckett, Crawford to Dodgers

BOSTON (AP) ? The Los Angeles Dodgers are stocking up for the stretch run with some new, expensive players who couldn't help the Boston Red Sox make it to the postseason this year or last.

The Dodgers acquired first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, pitcher Josh Beckett and injured outfielder Carl Crawford from Boston on Saturday, hoping to boost their playoff hopes by taking on the underperforming and high-priced stars who failed to thrive in a fractious Red Sox clubhouse.

Boston also sent infielder Nick Punto and about $11 million in cash to Los Angeles in the nine-player trade that was the biggest in Dodgers history. In return, the Red Sox got first baseman James Loney, pitcher Allen Webster, infielder Ivan DeJesus Jr. and two players to be named while shedding more than $250 million in salaries through 2018.

"We understand that you have to spend money to be good in this league," said Magic Johnson, the former NBA star who is part of the rich new Dodgers ownership group that has dramatically revamped their roster in the last month.

"When we came in, we made it clear that we want to build the Dodgers back to what they once were," Dodgers president Stan Kasten said.

Gonzalez hit a three-run homer in his first at-bat for the Dodgers, while the depleted Red Sox blew a six-run lead to the Kansas City Royals and lost 10-9 in 12 innings Saturday night.

Mauro Gomez, filling in for Gonzalez at first base, had four hits, including his first major league homer. But Aaron Cook, a late substitute for Beckett, gave up three runs before recording a single out, and after Boston rallied to take a 9-3 lead the bullpen couldn't hold it.

Kansas City scored six in the seventh, all with two outs.

"It was frustrating," Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said. "We couldn't get that third out in the seventh inning. Had about four tries."

Los Angeles, two games behind the San Francisco in the NL West, has in the past month acquired shortstop Hanley Ramirez, outfielder Shane Victorino, starter Joe Blanton and reliever Brandon League. The latest deal comes less than a week before the Aug. 31 deadline for players to be eligible for the postseason.

"It's just exciting," Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp said. "Everybody wants to win, and the guys up there are really making a statement and showing us that they want to win just as bad as we do."

For the Red Sox, 13 1/2 games back in the AL East, the trade signaled a concession for 2012 and a chance to rebuild without hefty contracts given during an undisciplined foray into free agency that, Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington conceded, has not worked out.

"It gives us an opportunity to build the next great Red Sox team," Cherington said. "We just felt like to get to be a team we believe in and a team the fans deserve, to sustain winning year after year, it was going to take something more than cosmetic changes. It was going to take something bold."

The Red Sox will save $261 million in salaries through 2018, plus a few million more for the rest of this season. Boston will send $11 million to the Dodgers as part of the deal, according to a baseball official with knowledge of the deal who spoke on condition of anonymity because the financial terms were not public.

"The bottom line is we haven't won enough games. That goes back to last September," Cherington said. "We just haven't performed on the field. As a team we haven't performed. ... This is not about the four players we gave up ? anything particularly they did wrong. We just didn't perform as a team."

Beckett was a key part of the team that won the 2007 World Series, but he was also the ringleader last year when the ballclub went 7-20 in September and missed a playoff spot on the final day of the season. Reports of players drinking beer and eating fried chicken in the clubhouse during games surfaced afterward, and Beckett's haughty demeanor ? and rising ERA ? continued to alienate fans.

The 2003 World Series MVP with the Florida Marlins, Beckett now moves from fried chicken to the land of In-N-Out Burger, bringing with him a pair of other players who were not productive enough to justify their contracts. Beckett was due $31.5 million over the next two years; Gonzalez has $127 million coming through 2018; Crawford is due $102.5 million over the next five seasons.

Both Cherington, who replaced Theo Epstein after the September collapse, and Valentine, who was brought in to replace Terry Francona, defended their departing players. But Valentine agreed that change was needed in the clubhouse.

"Yes. It was necessary," he said. "(It) just didn't seem like it mixed as well as it should."

Players traded in August have to first pass through waivers. Any team with a worse record than Los Angeles could have claimed Gonzalez, Beckett and Crawford before the Dodgers, but it would have had to pick up their contracts.

Instead, the teams worked out a deal that reshuffled the NL West race and had the rest of baseball talking, too.

"It's surprising," New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "You're not used to seeing that many big names go in one trade ? a bunch of All-Stars, guys who have been in World Series and played at a very high level."

Red Sox players said before Saturday night's game against Kansas City that they were surprised to see their longtime teammates gone in a deal that came together quickly. Gonzalez, Beckett and Crawford were already on their way to Los Angeles on Saturday, according to a picture Punto posted on Twitter; Boston pitcher John Lackey had already claimed Beckett's locker, pulling rank over Clay Buchholz.

"Nothing surprises me in this game," Red Sox outfielder Cody Ross in the Fenway Park clubhouse, where the nameplates had already been removed from his former teammates' lockers. "This isn't your normal trade. This is a blockbuster deal that will probably go down as one of the biggest, but it still doesn't surprise me."

Gonzalez, a former San Diego Padres star, said on Twitter in English and Spanish that he was excited to get back to California. Beckett joined the social media site to thank Red Sox fans, writing "Even in the tough times I ran into so many wonderful people that were so awesome I'm Greatly appreciative to all of you."

The 32-year-old Beckett is 5-11 with a 5.23 ERA in 21 starts this season. A three-time All-Star, he is 130-92 lifetime with a 3.93 ERA.

Gonzalez, 30, is a four-time All-Star and a three-time Gold Glove winner. He hit .300 with 15 home runs and 86 RBIs this season, his second since being traded by San Diego to Boston.

Crawford, at 31, hit .282 with three homers and 19 RBIs in 31 games this season. He had Tommy John surgery on his left elbow this week and is expected to take six to nine months to recover. Crawford was a four-time All-Star with Tampa Bay before signing with Boston.

The 34-year-old Punto hit .200 with one homer and 10 RBIs as a backup.

Loney hit .254 with four homers and 33 RBIs for the Dodgers this season. At 28, he'd spent his whole career in Los Angeles.

The 25-year-old DeJesus was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket. He hit .273 in 23 games for the Dodgers this year. Webster, a 22-year-old right-hander, was 6-8 with a 3.55 ERA at Double-A Chattanooga.

Cricket bringing peace in Afghanistan, says Zakhilwal

Cricket is bringing peace to war-ravaged Afghanistan and can further stabilise the country if foreign teams tour, an official said Sunday.

Afghanistan took a big step at international level by playing former world champions Australia on Saturday, their second limited overs match following their first against Pakistan six months earlier.

Despite their 66-run defeat, Afghanistan put up a great fight, further hinting they can improve if given more chances against top teams.

Afghanistan Cricket Board president Omar Zakhilwal believes the Australia match will go a long way in promoting the game and, in turn, peace in his country.

"It's a great occasion," Zakhilwal told AFP. "The one-day matches with Pakistan and Australia will go a long way in promoting cricket which is bringing peace in our country."

Cricket has attained enormous popularity in the country which has been mired in conflict since the ouster of the Taliban in 2001 with United States-led coalition forces still fighting insurgency and extremism.

Cricket has progressed by leaps and bounds in the last three years after it was introduced by youths who learnt the game in refugee camps in Pakistan following the Soviet invasion of their country in 1979.

In 2009 Afghanistan finished fifth in the 2011 World Cup qualifiers, earning the right to play one-day internationals.

Afghanistan then qualified for the 2010 World Twenty20 held in the Caribbean followed by their silver medal finish in the Asian Games in China the same year.

They have once again earned the right to play the fourth edition of the World Twenty20 to be held in Sri Lanka next month.

"The whole of Afghanistan is looking forward to the World Twenty20. If you see the performance of our players, and even though we may not have won these matches, but the way the players stood up to the pressure of international cricket proves that we have come a long way," said Zakhilwal.

"The youth are drawn away from hostilities by cricket. Today they watch, tomorrow they will play."

Zakhilwal, also the finance minister in the Hamid Karzai-led government, said the Australia match sends a positive message to the world.

"The message is that with determination and with a cause, these youngsters, who've gone through difficult times, can train and have big dreams.

"80-90 percent of the population were watching the match on television and listening to the radio. This is uniting the nation and is sending a positive message to the youth, so cricket is proving more than the game."

Zakhilwal said his Board owed a big thanks to Cricket Australia (CA).

"For them to give us this opportuntiy and come all the way from Australia to play is a great help. If any other country comes forward and plays, it will be good for our cricket."

Zakhilwal said his board was in touch with India, who they are placed with in the World Twenty20, along with defending champions England.

"We are in discussion with India to play a match and we also hope they invite our players into the Indian Premier League because that will establish them further," said Zakhilwal.

"If any team comes to Afghanistan and plays then it will be good for us. There are so many misconceptions about Afghanistan, teams can feel fully secure in Kabul, they will have lot of fans who will cheer for them," he said.

Apple wins $1bn in patent suit against Samsung

Apple won more than $1 billion in a massive victory Friday over South Korean giant Samsung, in one of the biggest patent cases in decades -- a verdict that could have huge market repercussions.

Samsung Electronics said it would contest the verdict.

"We will move immediately to file post-verdict motions to overturn this decision in this court and if we are not successful, we will appeal this decision to the Court of Appeals," it said in a statement.

A jury in San Jose, California rejected Samsung's counterclaims against Apple, according to media reports -- a big win for the Silicon Valley giant, which had claimed its iconic iPhone and iPad had been illegally copied.

The jury, which had examined infringement claims and counter-claims by Apple and Samsung, ruled the South Korean electronics giant had infringed on a number of patents, the tech websites Cnet and The Verge said in live courtroom blogs.

The verdict affects patents on a range of Samsung products including some of its popular Galaxy smartphones and its Galaxy 10 tablet -- devices alleged to have been copied from the iPhone and iPad.

"This is a huge, crushing win for Apple," said Brian Love, a professor of patent law at Santa Clara University.

"All of its patents were held valid, and all but one were held to be infringed by most or all accused Samsung products. Even better for the company, five of the seven patents were held to be willfully infringed by Samsung."

Love said this means that Judge Lucy Koh "now has the discretion to triple Apple's damages award, which is already a monstrous and unprecedented $1.051 billion."

Technology analyst Jeff Kagan said of the verdict: "This is a great day for Apple. And it will turn into a very expensive day for Samsung."

Kagan said it was not immediately clear if Samsung would be able to continue to use the technology and pay Apple for the right to do so, or if they must pull their devices and redesign them.

In any case, the verdict in the case -- one of several pending in global courts -- is likely to have massive repercussions in the hottest part of the technology sector, smartphones and tablets.

Even a delay in sales could endanger Samsung's position in the US market, where it is currently the top seller of smartphones.

A survey by research firm IDC showed Samsung shipped 50.2 million smartphones globally in the April-June period, while Apple sold 26 million iPhones. IDC said Samsung held 32.6 percent of the market to 16.9 percent for Apple.

The jury reached its verdict after deliberating for less than three days, examining claims of infringement by both sides. The trial heard evidence during 10 days over a three-week period.

Samsung had steadfastly denied the charges by Apple, claiming it developed its devices independently, and countersued in the case, seeking more than $400 million for infringement on its wireless patents.

The verdict came the same day a South Korean court ruled Apple and Samsung infringed on each other's patents on mobile devices, awarding damages to both technology giants and imposing a partial ban on product sales in South Korea.

The court banned sales in South Korea of Apple's iPhone 4 and iPad 2, as well as Samsung's Galaxy S and Galaxy SII among other products.

South Korean court rules Samsung didn't copy iPhone

SEOUL, South Korea ? South Korea's Samsung won a home court ruling in its global smartphone battle against Apple on Friday when judges in Seoul said the company didn't copy the look and feel of the U.S. company's iPhone, and that Apple infringed on Samsung's wireless technology.

However, in a split decision on patents, the panel also said Samsung violated Apple technology behind the bounce-back feature when scrolling on touch screens, and ordered both sides to pay limited damages.

The Seoul Central District Court ruling called for a partial ban on sales of products including iPads and smartphones from both companies, though the verdict did not affect the latest-generation phones ? Apple's iPhone 4S or Samsung's Galaxy S3.

AP

Samsung's Galaxy S III, right, and Apple's iPhone 4S are displayed at a mobile phone shop in Seoul, South Korea.

The ruling affects only the South Korean market, and is part of a larger, epic struggle over patents and innovation unfolding in nine countries. The biggest stakes are in the US, where Apple is suing Samsung for $2.5 billion over allegations it has created illegal knockoffs of iPhones and iPads.

The Seoul ruling was a rare victory for Samsung in its arguments that Apple has infringed on its wireless technology patents, which previously have been shot down by courts in Europe where judges have ruled that they are part of industry standards that must be licensed under fair terms to competitors.

"This is basically Samsung's victory on its home territory," said patent attorney Jeong Woo-sung. "Out of nine countries, Samsung got the ruling that it wanted for the first time in South Korea."

The ruling ordered Apple to remove the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad 1 and iPad 2 from store shelves in South Korea, saying that the products infringed on two of Samsung's five disputed patents, including those for telecommunications technology.

The court also denied Apple's claim that Samsung had illegally copied its design, ruling that big rectangular screens in cases with rounded corners had existed in products before the iPhone and iPad.

"It is not possible to assert that these two designs are similar based only on the similarity of those features," the court said in a ruling issued in Korean that was translated into English by The Associated Press. It also said individual icons in the Samsung products do not appear similar to the icons Apple used in the iPhone.

But the court ruled that Suwon, South Korea-based Samsung had infringed on one of Apple's patents on the feature that causes a screen to bounce back when a user scrolls to an end image. The court banned sales of Samsung products using the technology, including the Galaxy S2, in South Korea.

Chinese Factories Improve Conditions Where iPads Are Made

The Fair Labor Association has released a report documenting improvements in working conditions at three huge factories in China that make some of Apple's most popular products ? like the iPhone and the iPad. The factories are owned and run by Foxcon, and they employee hundreds of thousands of workers. And as NPR's Steve Henn reports, some labor advocates hope changes there could ripple through the entire industry.

One-molecule-thick material has big advantages

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? The discovery of graphene, a material just one atom thick and possessing exceptional strength and other novel properties, started an avalanche of research around its use for everything from electronics to optics to structural materials. But new research suggests that was just the beginning: A whole family of two-dimensional materials may open up even broader possibilities for applications that could change many aspects of modern life.

The latest "new" material, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) -- which has actually been used for decades, but not in its 2-D form -- was first described just a year ago by researchers in Switzerland. But in that year, researchers at MIT -- who struggled for several years to build electronic circuits out of graphene with very limited results (except for radio-frequency applications) -- have already succeeded in making a variety of electronic components from MoS2. They say the material could help usher in radically new products, from whole walls that glow to clothing with embedded electronics to glasses with built-in display screens.

A report on the production of complex electronic circuits from the new material was published online this month in the journal Nano Letters; the paper is authored by Han Wang and Lili Yu, graduate students in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS); Tom?s Palacios, the Emmanuel E. Landsman Associate Professor of EECS; and others at MIT and elsewhere.

Palacios says he thinks graphene and MoS2 are just the beginning of a new realm of research on two-dimensional materials. "It's the most exciting time for electronics in the last 20 or 30 years," he says. "It's opening up the door to a completely new domain of electronic materials and devices."

Like graphene, itself a 2-D form of graphite, molybdenum disulfide has been used for many years as an industrial lubricant. But it had never been seen as a 2-D platform for electronic devices until last year, when scientists at the Swiss university EPFL produced a transistor on the material.

MIT researchers quickly swung into action: Yi-Hsien Lee, a postdoc in associate professor Jing Kong's group in EECS, found a good way to make large sheets of the material using a chemical vapor deposition process. Lee came up with this method while working with Lain-Jong Li at Academia Sinica in Taiwan and improved it after coming to MIT. Palacios, Wang and Yu then set to producing building blocks of electronic circuits on the sheets made by Lee, as well as on MoS2 flakes produced by a mechanical method, which were used for the work described in the new paper.

Wang had been struggling to build circuits on graphene for his doctoral thesis research, but found it much easier to do with the new material. There was a "hefty bottleneck" to making progress with graphene, he explains, because that material lacks a bandgap -- the key property that makes it possible to create transistors, the basic component of logic and memory circuits. While graphene needs to be modified in exacting ways in order to create a bandgap, MoS2 just naturally comes with one.

The lack of a bandgap, Wang explains, means that with a switch made of graphene, "you can turn it on, but you can't turn it off. That means you can't do digital logic." So people have for years been searching for a material that shares some of graphene's extraordinary properties, but also has this missing quality -- as molybdenum disulfide does.

Because it already is widely produced as a lubricant, and thanks to ongoing work at MIT and other labs on making it into large sheets, scaling up production of the material for practical uses should be much easier than with other new materials, Wang and Palacios say.

Wang and Palacios were able to fabricate a variety of basic electronic devices on the material: an inverter, which switches an input voltage to its opposite; a NAND gate, a basic logic element that can be combined to carry out almost any kind of logic operation; a memory device, one of the key components of all computational devices; and a more complex circuit called a ring oscillator, made up of 12 interconnected transistors, which can produce a precisely tuned wave output.

Palacios says one potential application of the new material is large-screen displays such as television sets and computer monitors, where a separate transistor controls each pixel of the display. Because the material is just one molecule thick -- unlike the highly purified silicon that is used for conventional transistors and must be millions of atoms thick -- even a very large display would use only an infinitesimal quantity of the raw materials. This could potentially reduce cost and weight and improve energy efficiency.

In the future, it could also enable entirely new kinds of devices. The material could be used, in combination with other 2-D materials, to make light-emitting devices. Instead of producing a point source of light from one bulb, an entire wall could be made to glow, producing softer, less glaring light. Similarly, the antenna and other circuitry of a cellphone might be woven into fabric, providing a much more sensitive antenna that needs less power and could be incorporated into clothing, Palacios says.

The material is so thin that it's completely transparent, and it can be deposited on virtually any other material. For example, MoS2 could be applied to glass, producing displays built into a pair of eyeglasses or the window of a house or office.

Ali Javey, an associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of California at Berkeley, who was not involved in this research, says layered materials such as MoS2 are "a promising class of materials for future electronics," but cautions that "the future looks bright for layered semiconductors, but still work needs to be done to better understand their performance limits and large-scale manufacturing."

Overall, Javey says, the MIT team's research is "elegant" work that "takes an important step forward in advancing the field of layered semiconductors."

In addition to Palacios, Kong, Wang, Yu and Lee, the work was carried out by graduate student Allen Hsu and MIT affiliate Yumeng Shi, with U.S. Army Research Laboratory researchers Matthew Chin and Madan Dubey, and Lain-Jong Li of Academia Sinica in Taiwan. The work was funded by the U.S. Office of Naval Research, the Microelectronics Advanced Research Corporation Focus Center for Materials, the National Science Foundation and the Army Research Laboratory.
