9 amateur players killed in South Africa road accident, 3rd football tragedy in 9 months

9 players killed in South Africa road accident

Associated Press - 11 July 2013 12:12-04:00

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? The South African Football Association says nine amateur players were killed in a car wreck in the Eastern Cape province on Sunday.

SAFA sent condolences to the families and named the players, who were members of four different clubs and were traveling back from a game in the town of Jamestown.

Regional official Beja Maphelo said the players were "good role models to other youngsters. They always took football seriously and were eager to excel."

South Africa has a poor road safety record and football has experienced similar tragedies recently. In October, national team assistant coach Thomas Madigage was killed in a car accident in the northern Limpopo province. A month later four players from South Africa's second-tier league died when their minibus crashed in the same region.

Hackers ask feds to skip Defcon to ease tension over Snowden?

Member of the DHS Advisory Committee Jeff Moss speaks at the Reuters Global Media and Technology Summit in New York, June 12, 2012.

The annual Defcon hacking convention has asked the federal government to stay away this year for the first time in its 21-year history, saying Edward Snowden's revelations have made some in the community uncomfortable about having feds there.

"It would be best for everyone involved if the feds call a 'time-out' and not attend Defcon this year," Defcon founder Jeff Moss said in an announcement posted Wednesday night on the convention's website.

An irreverent crowd of more than 15,000 hackers, researchers, corporate security experts, privacy advocates, artists and others are expected to attend the Las Vegas convention that begins August 2.

Moss, who is an advisor on cyber security to the Department of Homeland Security, told Reuters that it was "a tough call," but that he believed the Defcon community needs time to make sense of the recent revelations about U.S. surveillance programs.

"The community is digesting things that the feds have had a decade to understand and come to terms with," said Moss, who is known as The Dark Tangent in hacking circles. "A little bit of time and distance can be a healthy thing, especially when emotions are running high."

He said that the move was not designed to create tension, but to defuse it. "We are not going on a witch hunt or checking IDs and kicking people out," he said.

In previous years the conference has attracted officials from federal agencies including the CIA, National Security Agency, FBI, Secret Service and all branches of the military.

Last year, four-star General Keith Alexander, head of the National Security Agency, was a keynote speaker at the event, which is the world's largest annual hacking conference.

The audience was respectful, gave modest applause and also asked about secret government snooping. Alexander adamantly denied that the NSA has dossiers on millions of Americans, as some former employees had suggested before the Snowden case.

"The people who would say we are doing that should know better," Alexander said. "That is absolute nonsense."

Alexander is scheduled to speak in Las Vegas on July 31 at Black Hat, a smaller, two-day hacking conference that was also founded by Moss. It costs about $2,000 to attend and attracts a more corporate crowd than Defcon, which charges $180.

Moss said that he believes Alexander will still speak at Black Hat and that his call for a "time out" only applies to Defcon. Officials with the National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security could not be reached for comment late on Wednesday.

The feds have previously always been welcome at the event.

Moss says he invited them the first year because he figured they would come anyway. They politely declined, then showed up incognito, he said. And they have attended every year since.

"We created an environment where the feds felt they could come and it wasn't hostile," Moss said in an interview a year ago. "We could ask them questions and they wanted to ask the hackers about new techniques."

Some feds have even worked among the motley crew of Defcon volunteers who run the conference and walk around wearing T-Shirts that identify them as "goons."

It has also become a fertile ground for recruiting. The U.S. military, intelligence agencies and law enforcement typically compete with corporations to find new talent at Defcon.

WWE opens Central Florida training center (Twitter story)

Richard Bilbao

The WWE Performance Center opened July 11, 2013.

World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. opened its 26,000-square-foot training facility in Orlando on July 11 to media, public officials and fans.

WWE (NYSE: WWE) Executive Vice President of Talent and Live Events Paul Levesque, also known in the WWE as Triple H, was on site to give the tour of the facility alongside Florida Gov. Rick Scott.

(Side note: Scott asked Levesque is he still had time to become a WWE star, to which Levesque hesitated a second and said "Sure, you can." It garnered a few laughs.)

The facility will be the home for 75 WWE athletes as well as additional support staff.

The new WWE facility includes:

? In-ring Training Room: A 12,000-square-foot room equipped with seven training rings including one "show ring" that has all the theatrical lighting and broadcast capability used in most of WWE's live events.

? Sports medicine and rehabilitation room: Athletes can get on-site medical care from doctors, athletic trainers and physical therapists experienced in common injuries from the sports.

? Strength and Condition room: A 5,500-square-foot strength and cardio center with world-renowned strength coaches on site to help athletes enhance their skills.

? Edit and production suites: Cutting-edge rooms with pre-tape and voice over capabilities that can help athletes hone their performance skills, watch and playback and also transmit those recordings to WWE's live shows.

Most impressive is the facilities ability to connect to the company's headquarters in Stamford, Conn., said Levesque. "Athletes can record here and we can watch and critique those athletes live from Stamford."

US military probed for building $34 million building in Afghanistan -- and never using it

By Jim Miklaszewski and Courtney Kube, NBC News

The Office of the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) is investigating why the U.S. military spent $34 million constructing a building in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, that has never been used ? and may now be demolished.

SIGAR sent a letter to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and two top generals this week, requesting more information about the project.

The 64,000-square foot building was commissioned by the Army in February 2010 to be the Regional Command Southwest Command and Control Facility during the surge. But, in May 2010, even before construction began, the Marine commander in the area submitted a request to US Forces Afghanistan to cancel the project.?

Despite that request, the following year, in February 2011, the Air Force issued an order to British-based AMEC Earth and Environment Inc. to construct the facility and in November 2012, the U.S. government took over the facility.?

In his letter, SIGAR John Sopko said the military knew the building would not be used for its original purpose well before construction began, and has asked Hagel, as well as Generals Dunford and Austin, to explain why construction ever began. He also asks them to find out whether another facility has also been built to replace this one (that was never used).

Sopko asked if turning the building over to the Afghan government is even a possibility, given that the Afghans may not have the technical capacity or money to maintain it.

"According to a senior U.S. military official, as the footprint of Camp Leatherneck decreases, the building could be outside the security perimeter, thereby making it unsafe for the U.S. military to occupy it. This leaves the military with two primary options ??demolish the building or give it to the Afghan government," Sopko wrote.

Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said that the Pentagon is "viewing the report," and has nothing more to add to it. He was not sure when Secretary Hagel would provide a formal response.
