Justice Dept.: Zimmerman case under review

(AP) ? The Justice Department said Sunday it is looking into the shooting death of Trayvon Martin to determine whether federal prosecutors will file criminal civil rights charges now that George Zimmerman has been acquitted in the state case.

The department opened an investigation into Martin's death last year but stepped aside to allow the state prosecution to proceed.

In a statement, the Justice Department said the criminal section of its civil rights division, the FBI and the U.S. Attorney's office for the Middle District of Florida are continuing to evaluate the evidence generated during the federal probe, in addition to the evidence and testimony from the state trial.

"Experienced federal prosecutors will determine whether the evidence reveals a prosecutable violation of any of the limited federal criminal civil rights statutes within our jurisdiction," the statement said. Justice added that it will determine "whether federal prosecution is appropriate in accordance with the department's policy governing successive federal prosecution following a state trial."

From the Rodney King case in Los Angeles to the Algiers Motel incident in Detroit more than four decades ago, the Justice Department has a long history of using federal civil rights law in an effort to convict defendants who have previously been acquitted in related state cases.

On Sunday, NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous started a petition calling for the Justice Department to open a civil rights case against Zimmerman for the shooting death of 17-year-old Martin, but experience has shown it's almost never easy getting convictions in such high-profile prosecutions.

"The Justice Department would face significant challenges in bringing a federal civil rights case against Mr. Zimmerman," said Alan Vinegrad, the former U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of New York. "There are several factual and legal hurdles that federal prosecutors would have to overcome: They'd have to show not only that the attack was unjustified, but that Mr. Zimmerman attacked Mr. Martin because of his race and because he was using a public facility, the street."

As to the last element, the confrontation between Zimmerman and the shooting victim occurred in a gated community, which may not fit the legal definition of a public facility.

Lauren Resnick, a former federal prosecutor in New York who successfully prosecuted a man in the killing of an Orthodox Jew during the 1991 Crown Heights riots in Brooklyn, said the Justice Department could conceivably proceed under a theory that Zimmerman interfered with Martin's right to walk down a public street based on his race. But that would be challenging, she said, because it would require prosecutors to prove, among other things, that trailing Martin on the street constituted interference.

"One could argue it did, if it freaked him out and he couldn't comfortably walk down the street ? there's an argument here," said Resnick, who now specializes in white-collar criminal defense and commercial litigation.

But she said federal prosecutors were likely to encounter the same hurdles as state prosecutors in establishing that Zimmerman was driven by racial animus and was the initial aggressor, as opposed to someone who acted in self-defense.

"When you have a fact pattern where one person's alive, and one person's not, and the person alive is the defendant, it's hard to prove things beyond a reasonable doubt," said Resnick. She also said it was easier to prove a criminal bias in the Crown Heights killing than it would be in any federal prosecution of Zimmerman.

Samuel Bagenstos, a former No. 2 official in the Justice Department's civil rights division, said: "This is an administration that hasn't shied away from bringing hate crimes cases that are solid prosecutions based on the facts and the law, but from what I've seen this would be a very difficult case to prosecute federally because the government would have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that George Zimmerman acted because of Trayvon Martin's race. If you're trying to prove racial motivation, you are usually looking for multiple statements related to why he is engaging in this act of violence. I think it's a difficult case to prove."

Another federal case, the Rodney King prosecution, illustrates just how difficult it can be for the federal government to come in behind a state prosecution that ended in acquittal, even when there's videotaped evidence of the crime.

King was beaten by Los Angeles Police Department officers after a high-speed car chase in 1991, but the four police officers charged in the incident were acquitted on state charges of assault with a deadly weapon and three of the four were acquitted on a charge of use of excessive force. The jury deadlocked on the excessive force charge against the fourth officer.

Federal prosecutors obtained an indictment on charges of violating King's civil rights. Two of the officers were found guilty and were imprisoned. The other two officers were acquitted.

In a 1970 prosecution, the Justice Department charged three white Detroit police officers and one black private security guard with allegedly conspiring to deprive eight black youths and two white girls of their civil rights during the 1967 riots in Detroit.

The officers had gone to the Algiers Motel in a reported search for snipers. Three black teenagers were slain at the motel. One of the police officers had been acquitted earlier of a state charge of first-degree murder in the case; another officer had been found innocent in a separate state trial on a charge of felonious assault.

The federal case took place in Flint, Mich., an hour's drive north of Detroit, after the defense complained that the defendants could not get a fair trial in the city where the slayings occurred. A jury acquitted all four defendants.

In prosecuting the law enforcement officers, the Justice Department invoked an 1871 civil rights law. Prosecutors alleged that the officers had lined up the people staying at the motel and slugged them with clubs and rifle butts. There was testimony that several of the guests were taken into separate rooms where shotguns were fired into the ceiling in an effort to get those in a nearby hallway to disclose the identity of the alleged snipers and the location of firearms.

In a defense that turned out to be successful, defense attorneys emphasized that the charge against their clients was conspiracy, not assault, coercion, intimidation or murder. Lawyers for the two officers previously charged in the state cases also argued that their clients were being charged with serious criminality even though they had already been acquitted.

Canadian freed after 18 months in Mauritanian jail

NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania (AP) ? A Mauritanian official says a 24-year-old Canadian man was sentenced to 18 months in prison after being convicted of having ties to al-Qaida's North African branch but he will be freed because he has already served his time.

Prosecutor Ahmed Ould Abdalla told the Associated Press late Sunday that the court decided to release Canadian national Aaron Yoon because he had already been imprisoned for the duration of his sentence. He was first arrested in December of 2011.

Yoon said he travelled to Mauritania to study the Quran. He reportedly travelled to the region with two other Canadians, who were later implicated in a separate terror attack on a BP-operated natural gas plant in southeastern Algeria earlier this year, which ended with the deaths of 37 hostages.

Exxon?s $735 Million Ukraine Pledge Shows Black Sea Zeal: Energy

KIEV, Ukraine -- Exxon Mobil Corp is so confident of prospects in the unexplored Black Sea it will spend $735 million to drill just two deep-water wells off Ukraine?s coast.

The outlay comprises a $335 million signing bonus for Ukraine?s government and a promise to spend a further $400 million on seismic surveys and drilling two wells, according to an Energy Ministry official.

After making a natural gas discovery in neighboring Romania that may flow fast enough to supply half of that country?s consumption, Exxon plans exploration in Bulgaria, Russia and Ukraine.

The Black Sea is almost untouched by the oil industry, with fewer than 100 wells drilled, compared with more than 7,000 in the North Sea.

Improving drilling technologies and increased regional energy demand is drawing explorers to its challenging waters deeper than 1,000 feet (300 meters), said Philipp Chladek, a Bloomberg Industries analyst.

?If you think about where the unexplored areas in Europe are, you have the Black Sea and the Arctic,? said Iain Pyle, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. in London.

?The Black Sea is obviously far more accessible.?

Ukraine plans to sign a completed exploration agreement with Exxon later this year before offering more blocks to explorers, the Energy Ministry official said, asking not to be named because he?s not authorized to speak to the media.

The Skifska area covered by the license is adjacent to Romania?s Neptun block where Exxon and partner OMV Petrom SA (SNP) made last year?s Domino-1 gas find, which showed potential output at about 630 million cubic feet a day.

Domino-1 is so substantial that it may allow the country to become a gas exporter after 2018, Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta said yesterday at a conference in Bucharest.

Soviet Republics?

?In regard to the overall potential of the Black Sea, Domino-1 sets a good precedent,? Kevin Biddle, exploration director for Exxon in Europe, said in an e-mail.

?We expect to see exploration programs undertaken in Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Russia in the next few years.?

Richard Scrase, a spokesman for Irving, Texas-based Exxon, said the company intends to start exploration works in Ukraine shortly after signing the license, which will include a bonus of more than $300 million.

With oil above $100 a barrel and onshore supplies waning, former Soviet republics and their ex-communist satellites surrounding the Black Sea are throwing their doors open to Exxon and competitors to search beneath the brackish waters that run as deep as 1.4 miles (2.2 kilometers).

The lack of exploration means the International Energy Agency and BP Plc (BP/) have no estimates for the sea?s reserves.

Billion Dollars?

Exxon and partner OMV Petrom said they plan to invest several billion dollars in Romania?s Neptun block.

The country plans a new bidding round for eight offshore blocks by the end of the third quarter.

?Deep-water exploration requires a huge capex, which none of the national companies could afford,? said Oleg Galbur, an oil and gas analyst at Raiffeisen Bank in Vienna.

?Oil and gas prices 10 years ago wouldn?t justify it, but now it?s different.?

The region had until recently been ignored by companies like Exxon and Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSA) because Ukraine, Romania and Bulgaria have in the past satisfied their demand for oil and gas through a combination of domestic onshore drilling and imports from Russia.

Now seeking to cut dependence on Russia, those countries need the international companies with their technology, cash and know-how for deep-sea drilling, Pyle said.

Turkish Boom?

Analysts credit the surge of interest in the sea to deregulation of local gas markets, proximity to fuel-hungry western Europe and rising energy needs.

Romania, where domestic gas prices are four times cheaper than imports, began to liberalize its gas market last year, Raiffeisen?s Galbur said.

Neighboring Ukraine is particularly eager to reduce its reliance on Russian export monopoly OAO Gazprom (GAZPROM).

The two countries? long-standing dispute over gas prices disrupted supplies to Europe in 2009 and left Ukraine vulnerable to decisions taken in Moscow.

In the past Ukraine was able to negotiate cheap gas prices because the only pipeline from Russia to western Europe ran across its territory.

That bargaining position was lost after the 2011 completion of the Nord Stream pipeline that linked Russia directly with Germany via the Baltic Sea.

The country imports about 55 percent of its gas consumption, most of it from Russia.

Black Sea exploration is also rapidly advancing in Turkey, where Exxon teamed up with Turkish state-owned energy company TPAO.

Shell, Petroleo Brasileiro SA (PBR) and Chevron Corp. (CVX) are all present.

The country, which has so far spent more than $2.5 billion on offshore exploration, will increase its exploration budget 13-fold, its energy minister said in April.

?The European Black Sea area now has a better chance to unfold its full potential,? Bloomberg Industries? Chladek said.

?The gradual liberalization of the local gas markets will enable companies to earn back justifiable returns.?

Iraq: Wave of evening bombings kills at least 15

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraqi authorities say a wave of new explosions has struck cities south of Baghdad, killing at least 15 and wounding dozens.

Police say the deadly blasts struck shortly before the evening iftar meal that ends the daylong fast during the holy month of Ramadan. They reported four dead in Karbala, five in Nasiriyah and six in Musayyib. Hospital officials confirmed the casualty tolls.

Officials say powerful explosions also struck the cities of Kut and Basra, but they were unable to provide casualty figures.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to release the information to reporters.

Iraqi is being hit by its worst waves of violence in years, raising fears the country is heading back toward the widespread sectarian fighting that peaked in 2006 and 2007.

Lac-Megantic marks deadly train crash with vigil, church bells

LAC-MEGANTIC? - A week after their town was devastated by one of the worst train accidents in Canadian history, residents of Lac-Megantic, Quebec, began commemorating their dead, holding a tearful candlelight vigil and tolling the bells of the local church.

Dozens of people from the town and area gathered at the Paroisse de Ste-Agnes church on Friday evening to pray and remember an estimated 50 people killed after a train hauling crude oil jumped the track and exploded into flames there last Saturday.

The recently reopened church has become a centre of mourning for the small community, with residents leaving flowers, pictures, notes and other mementos.

Dominique Bordeleau, a high school teacher attending the vigil, said she recognized two of her former students among the dead whose photos were placed in the church's shrine.

"It really sinks in what happened when you see these pictures. It reaches deep into you. It's devastating," she said.

The vigil was smaller than originally expected after Mayor Colette Roy-Laroche pleaded with out-of-towners not to come into Lac-Megantic, saying it would overwhelm a community still under a state of emergency.

Instead, candlelight vigils were held in communities across the province.

Another tribute to the dead and missing was planned for Saturday at noon, when the bells of Paroisse Ste-Agnes will be rung 50 times.

Even as residents paused to remember, police and emergency officials continued the complex task of looking for bodies and identifying them.

Authorities working in the town's restricted red zone have recovered 28 bodies so far, eight of which have been identified. Another 22 people are presumed dead.

But the work has been made more difficult by the abundance of crude oil on the site, which unleashes harmful fumes to workers when displaced.

"We had to slow our searches in the field because of many factors, including air," said Michel Forget, an inspector with Surete du Quebec, the provincial police force.

The force is looking at ways to improve ventilation, a move it hopes will speed up the process. The Surete said investigators from the police forces of Montreal and Quebec City had arrived, a move he said would accelerate the process.

The town is showing small signs of a return to normalcy. On Friday evening the summer weather brought many people back onto the quaint streets and outdoor patios that have helped make Lac-Megantic a popular tourist destination.

But emotions remained raw in the tight-knit community, where everyone seems to know each other through at least one degree of separation.

On Friday, one distraught woman interrupted a press conference given by the police shouting, "What is it you want to know? We're in pain. We're in pain."

New wave of Silicon Valley travel apps challenging older ...

Summer's in full effect, which means it's time to hit the road. And it goes without saying that you're not alone: Elizabeth Becker, author of "Overbooked: The Exploding Business of Travel and Tourism," reports that the number of worldwide tourists hit 1 billion last year.

"The travel and tourism industry," she said, "is poised to become the biggest business sector in the world."

Silicon Valley, naturally, is taking notice. And in the same way technology has disrupted standbys such as guidebooks and travel agents, a new breed of startups is cropping up to offer alternatives built around social media and search.

"It's still too hard for consumers to find a place to stay," said Drew Patterson, CEO of Mountain View-based Room 77. He cites the typical horror story of a traveler who books a room on discount site Priceline "and gets stuck between the elevator and ice machine."

Room 77 debuted two years ago to offer travelers more details about rooms before booking, including the floor plans and views. The site has since evolved into a search engine that folds in content from a number of older travel sites -- like TripAdvisor reviews and rates from such vendors as Hotels.com and, yes, Priceline.

"I only have to go to one site," said Phillip Deland of Pleasanton, a business manager at a chemical analysis company who's used Room 77 for business trips in the United States and abroad.

The site gets a cut when users book rooms

via one of those older online retailers like Hotels.com. But Patterson said those "retail" travel sites are losing their edge with consumers, due in large part to the convenience factor Deland cites.

"You're seeing this very broad shift in the market from retailers to search, because a search engine gives consumers a better answer," Patterson said. "We've got an engineering team full of ex-Googlers."

Travel search engines, he added, racked up 500 million searches last year. That goes a long way toward explaining why Priceline in November bought search site Kayak (where Patterson was an early executive) for $1.8 billion and why Expedia in January led a $30 million funding round for Room 77.

Another popular new search site is San Francisco's Hipmunk, which focuses on flights, but also has added hotel bookings. Co-founder Adam Goldstein cooked up the idea while a member of MIT's debate team; arranging group travel to competitions in Turkey and Botswana, he said, "was agony. All the sites offered nearly identical prices. It didn't make any sense."

His solution: Rating search results using an "agony index" that shows a flight's duration and number of stops, along with the price. The site also presents options like the cost and time needed for a plane trip versus traveling the same route via train.

"It's a great user experience," said Matthew Dorr, a tech investment banker in San Francisco who first read about the site in a tech blog last year. He likes the fact that when Hipmunk compares prices across various booking sites, they all appear in the same window rather than in separate pop-ups, as on Kayak.

Goldstein added that while his company's business model mirrors Connecticut-based Kayak's, taking a slice of each fare booked, Hipmunk also integrates your online calendar -- to show, for instance, a hotel near the meetings you've got scheduled.

The former Apple (AAPL) intern freely admits he and his co-founder, Steve Huffman, knew nothing about the travel business when they started Hipmunk. But because Huffman had previously founded news-sharing site Reddit (and sold it for millions to Cond? Nast), he gained access to venture backers such as Ignition Partners, which had invested in Expedia.

While Goldstein declined to specify how many people use the site, he said they perform millions of searches a month. About a third of those searches come from mobile devices, which he said reflects the "younger, technologically hip" demographic that he believes the traditional travel industry underserves.

In another effort to woo those tech hipsters, Hipmunk displays lodging options from Airbnb (a fellow alumnus of startup incubator Y Combinator) alongside those of the older hotel booking sites.

Also backed by Y Combinator is a newer entrant in the travel search space, GetGoing, which offers personalized flight searches -- or, if you're not quite sure where to go, will suggest options based on queries as general as the word "beaches."

In fact, the notion of helping travelers decide where to go and what to do is behind a growing number of next-generation travel sites and apps. One of the current heavyweights in the space is San Francisco's Gogobot, launched in 2010 by veterans of MySpace and Yahoo (YHOO). The site's 2.5 million registered users can troll their Facebook and Twitter networks for recommendations on lodging, dining and destinations.

"You can kind of see where everybody else is going," said Karen Le, a civil engineer in San Jose who calls the site better organized and more trustworthy than other recommendation engines like TripAdvisor and Yelp.

Becker, the author, said first-generation online travel tools like Travelocity and Hotwire have helped revolutionize the industry and driven down costs. "Now that people believe they are their own best travel agents and can book everything online," she said, "the number of new apps will only increase."

    PLANNING THE WAY
The number of travel apps and websites continues to swell, with other new entrants such as:
    Eventseeker
Offers itinerary recommendations tailored to your Facebook profile
    Localeur
Austin-based service helps travelers find mom-and-pop bars and restaurants so they don't feel like tourists.
    MochaMeet
App tells you which city your friends are in and helps schedule meeting times and places
    Tripobox
Collaborative marketplace simplifies planning of group trips.
    Triposo
Founded by ex-Google engineers in Berlin, app makes recommendations that change as you wander around.
    Weotta
"Social discovery" app came out of stealth mode in late May with funding from Google Ventures

Another Case of Brain Cancer In Baseball. What?s Going On?

Retired Philadelphia Phillies catcher?Darren Daulton revealed he was diagnosed with glioblastoma. That makes seven Major League Baseball (MLB) players or managers to succumb to the disease in recent years. Is there a cancer cluster in baseball?

Baseball fans were jolted by the sad news that Daulton, 51, has been diagnosed with the aggressive form of brain cancer, which has a median survival rate of just 15 months and a five-year survival rate of 4%. Some people do defy those odds, and Daulton?s family and his legion of fans are rooting for him to be one of them.

But the news also raised a deeper kind of worry. Glioblastoma is a rare cancer, but it does seem to turn up with disturbing frequency in the MLB. The disease has claimed the lives of a near-All Star roster of names that includes Gary Carter, Dick Howser, Johnny Oates, Ken Brett, Tug McGraw, Johnny Vukovich and more in the past decade or so. This, not surprisingly, has led people to look for ?a connection between the cancer and the sport. Is there something about baseball?which involves nowhere near the ferocious contact that football does but does have its share of collisions?that is causing the trauma that leads to the disease? Daulton, Oates and Carter all played catcher, which is the most physical of all of the positions in the diamond. Is there something about a particular team or the geographic in which it plays? Brett, Oates, Vukovich and McGraw, like Daulton, spent at least part of their careers in Philadelphia.

MORE: Even Football Players Without Concussions Show Signs of Brain Injury

Many of these questions were raised in 2011, when Carter?s diagnosis was announced. Doctors understand the human need to look for patterns and causes in the incidence of disease?indeed, that?s what the science of epidemiology is about. But in Daulton?s case, as in Carter?s and all of the others, there?s simply no plausible link. In 2011, Henry Friedman, one of Carter?s doctors and one of the deputy?co-directors of Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center, associated with Duke University addressed the head trauma link first: ?There is no data that relates concussions to brain tumors in any way shape or form,? he said bluntly, a conclusion that has continued to hold.

The much greater threat, as the National Football League is painfully learning, is brain damage that can lead to early-onset dementia, sometimes culminating in suicide. Chewing tobacco, which is still commonly used in baseball, is also a potential culprit, but again, there?s little plausible link.??Yes, it leads to cancer of the mouth and jaw,? said Friedman in 2011. ?But even with some getting into the stomach and then into the bloodstream, it wouldn?t be in sufficient quantities to affect brain tissue.? Then, there?s the issue of steroids, which have been baseball?s long disgrace and still taint the sport. As I wrote when the Carter story broke:

Steroids?have long been linked with brain cancer in the public mind, at least since the death of NFL defensive lineman Lyle Alzado, who died of the disease in 1992 after a career of anabolic steroid use. He went to his grave blaming his doping for his illness. But while Alzado was a tragic authority on the multiple deadly effects of steroids, he wasn?t a doctor.

?Alzado had a brain lymphoma, he did not have a glioblastoma,? says Dr. Gary Green, medical director of Major League Baseball. What?s more, Carter and the other baseball figures who have contracted the disease played the game in the pre-steroid era, and they all got sick long after they retired from playing. Neurosurgeon Alex Valadka, Major League Baseball?s medical consultant on brain trauma, even points out that in some cases steroids are actually used to treat brain tumors. ?When the brain is injured, it swells,? he says, ?and steroids help bring that down.?

All of this suggests that Daulton, like Carter, Oates and the others, may simply be a victim of demographics, age and gender and nothing more. Glioblastoma strikes about 18,000 Americans per year,?or .00006 of the 300 million U.S. population.?About 1,600 men play in the MLB in any one season; over the course of 25 years that adds up only to about 5,200 individuals, since some play for years and years and others play for just a single season or less. Against that, the incidence of glioblastoma within baseball matches up pretty neatly with that in the overall population. And men, as a rule, have a higher incidence of the disease than women.

MORE: Is Brain Cancer Stalking Major League Baseball?

None of this is comfort for Daulton and his family, who are facing a challenging time. But it?s a reminder that disease clustering is often far more complicated than it looks, and that other players can safely hold Daulton in their prayers without worrying unduly that they?ll be the ones being prayed for next.

Gay marriage foes seek to halt California same-sex weddings

    By Dan Levine

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Gay marriage opponents asked the California Supreme Court on Friday to stop same-sex weddings in the state and order that a voter initiative banning the nuptials remain in effect.

California voters passed the wedding ban, known as Proposition 8, in 2008 but a San Francisco federal judge struck down the initiative as unconstitutional. Last month the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that backers of the ban did not have the legal right to appeal.

A federal appeals court then allowed gay marriages to resume, and a wave of ceremonies around the state began immediately. Same-sex marriage has been allowed in 13 states and Washington D.C., and gay rights advocates believe momentum is on their side to extend it further.

In court papers filed on Friday, however, the pro-Prop. 8 group Protectmarriage.com asked the California Supreme Court to immediately tell county clerks that Prop. 8 remains in effect and order them to stop issuing wedding licenses.

California Attorney General Kamala Harris opined last month that clerks should issue wedding licenses.

Harris on Friday filed a brief with the state Supreme Court asking it to deny the request from the opponents of gay marriage.

"Today's filing by the proponents of Proposition 8 is yet another attempt to deny same-sex couples their constitutionally protected civil rights. It is baseless and we will continue to fight against it," Harris said in a statement.

Theodore Olson, who represented the gay couples that challenged Prop. 8 in court, called the latest court filing "a desperate and frivolous act."

Protectmarriage.com attorneys wrote in their brief that the injunction against Prop. 8 only applies to the two couples who were plaintiffs in the federal litigation, not to the state as a whole.

"Because those plaintiffs have recently been married, all relief due under that injunction has already been provided," they wrote, "and therefore none of the county clerks are required by that injunction to stop enforcing Proposition 8 in the future."

However, Olson said clerks are bound to issue the licenses.

"Any county that defies the federal court's injunction is at risk not only of contempt of court," Olson said in a statement, "but also a lawsuit under the federal civil rights laws for which it would be liable for damages and the plaintiffs' attorneys' fees."

Jim Campbell, legal counsel for Alliance Defending Freedom, which represents Protectmarriage.com, said his group has no current plans to seek to uphold Prop. 8 in any other court. The California Supreme Court's normal schedule for such a proceeding calls for the state to respond in 10 days, Campbell said, but the court could change that timeline.

Pangos, Canada beat Team USA in World University Games

KAZAN, Russia ? Gonzaga University junior Kevin Pangos scored 9 points and Canada?s Development Men?s National Team defeated the United States 94-85 Friday to win Group C at the 2013 FISU Universiade and enter medal round play at 5-0.

The loss dropped the Americans out of medal competition at 3-2. The best the U.S. can finish is ninth.

Canada will face either Brazil (3-1), Norway (2-2) or Finland (3-2) as the runner-up in Group D in Sunday?s quarterfinal of what is also known as the World University Games. Brazil and Norway play later Friday, a Brazil victory sending them to the quarterfinals. A Norway victory creates a three-way tie for second and would involve tiebreakers to determine Canada?s opponent. Lithuania won Pool D with a 5-0 mark.

Pangos, averaging 9.8 ppg, 2.0 rpg and 2.6 assists/game through the completion of pool play, went 4-for-9 from the field Friday, including 1-2 from 3-point range. He also grabbed two rebounds and had a pair of assists in 21 minutes.?????????

Team USA opened the match on a 14-4 run, powered by the hot hand of Luke Hancock, but Team Canada quickly countered. Back-to-back three-pointers from Philip Scrubb and Brady Heslip ? who each notched an assist on the other?s shot ? began a 14-3 stretch as Canada built an 18-17 advantage after the game?s first 10 minutes. Canada?s offence shone through with a 28-point second quarter; the team?s defense held firm and limited the Americans to 19 in the frame.

The teams traded chances in the third quarter. Team USA came out of the break shooting the ball well, but Waterloo, Ont. native Murphy Burnatowski answered with five straight points. A frantic quarter saw both sides pushing hard, but Canada established its largest lead of the game at 16 points after Dwight Powell found a streaking Melvin Ejim for an emphatic slam dunk. After 30 minutes of play, Canada held an 11-point lead over the American side.

The back-and-forth action continued in the final period with the Red and White looking to close-out the contest and Team USA attempting to shoot its way back into the game. Heslip and Powell combined for 15 points as a determined Canadian side held off the American?s advance. Hancock contributed 14 of his game-high 27 points in the frame, but his lone effort was not enough to counter the Canadians? balanced offence.

Canada?s team of student-athletes was led by another impressive shooting performance from Burlington, Ontario?s Heslip, who finished with 20 points in the match, including four baskets from beyond-the-arc. Heslip has now recorded 18 three-pointers in Team Canada?s five games. Calgary, Alta. native Jordan Bachynski added 13 points in the contest. Powell, a product of Toronto, Ont., added 10 points and 6 rebounds. The Canadians? relentless attack from in-close produced 52 points in the paint while Team USA was held to 22 around the basket.
