Campaign Urges Mayor Brown to Block Colvin Church Demo

The Campaign for Greater Buffalo History Architecture and Culture has sent a letter, quoted in full below, to Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown urging that he direct Commissioner of Permit and Inspection Services James Comerford to rescind his issuance of a demolition permit, effective Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, to the owners of the former North park Baptist Church (later Temple Emanu-El) at Colvin and Tacoma avenues in North Buffalo.

?

Hon. Byron Brown
City Hall
Buffalo, NY 14202
VIA?HAND?DELIVERY?AND?EMAIL

Re: Former North Park Baptist Church-Temple Emanu-El, 375 Colvin Avenue.
?
Dear Mayor Brown,

At its meeting yesterday, the Buffalo Preservation Board found that the threatened former North Park Baptist Church at 375 Colvin Avenue qualified for designation as a city landmark. Only one of nine criteria need be met for designation; the board found that this building met five of the criteria. The board voted unanimously to designate the building as a landmark and scheduled a public hearing for January 10. The building is best known as the former Temple Emanu-El, the seat of the most significant rabbi within Conservative Judaism in the United States, Isaac Klein, from 1953 to 1968. The former Baptist congregation overextended itself on the grand building, and sold it in 1934 to congregation Emanu-El, led by Rabbi Joseph Gitin (upon his death in 2010 at age 104, Rabbi Gitin was believed to have been oldest Reform rabbi in the world).
?
Commissioner Jim Comerford has indicated he is "releasing" the historic building for demolition and issuing a demolition permit effective Monday, December 31 on a non-emergency basis. Such action would be taken with full knowledge and directly contrary to the Preservation Board.

This is an iconic building in North Buffalo, the demolition of which, the Preservation Board was informed, is opposed by many in the community. Councilmember Michael LoCurto informed the board that he is opposed to demolition and supports the formal designation of the building as a landmark. In addition, The Campaign for Greater Buffalo opposes the demolition and supports the desgnation of the site as a landmark.
?
That this should be happening during the holidays and after the owners cancelled an inspection of the building by the Preservation Board just hours before it was to take place (and, it seems, after Commissioner Comerford made the decision to issue the demolition permit), is of utmost concern. As indicated by the non-emergency status of the demolition permit, no health or safety reason exists for the building to be torn down.
?
You have in the past intervened to forestall demolitions of significant buildings and we must urge you once again to take immediate action and direct that this demolition permit be rescinded or delayed at least until the full Common Council has acted on the nomination.
?
Sincerely

[signed]

PST: Something special from Man City?

Yesterday, I wondered if Manchester City really had the ?stuff,? that intangible spirit that champions require to get on top and then, even more difficult, to stay atop against the pressure and expectations that come with the position.

So far we just haven?t seen much evidence of that ?something extra? from Roberto Mancini?s club, which is barely hanging into the pursuit of first-place Manchester United.

Did we see one of those wins Saturday?

City went into Carrow Road and emerged with a memorable 4-3 win. (Interesting: That was the very same score by which Alex Ferguson?s Manchester United prevailed over Newcastle just days before, that in a match I had identified as one of those special wins.)

It took a lot Saturday as City had been reduced to 10 men for more than a half thanks to Samir Nasri?s hotheadedness.

It also took special performances, one from Sergio Aguero (pictured), who was indefatigable in his work. Yaya Toure was his usual do-all self; has there been a more useful all-around man in the Premier League this year?

Edin Dzeko, with two early goals and then a second-half winner (although not officially), proved that there may be renewed life in the City crop of strikers that simply has not found net enough this year.

As City held the lead, the character and championship spirit finally began coming through. The effort and defending was resolute.

Then City was absolutely wonderful in killing off the match ? and not just with those slow-go tactics, either. The ability to hold the ball and limit the home team?s attempts to throw balls forward and make something from nothing really was quite skillful in its execution.

Something special from City? Something to inspire the effort going forward? We?ll find out, because it?s only special if it does, actually, coax a little more belief and scrappiness in the matches ahead.

Putin signs antiadoption law, throwing pending adoptions into confusion (+video)

About 1,000 Russian children were adopted by US families in 2011, and around 50 such adoptions are pending.

By Fred Weir,?Correspondent / December 28, 2012

Orphan children play in their bedroom at an orphanage in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don December 19. A bill banning Americans from adopting Russian children went to President Vladimir Putin for his signature on December 26, 2012 after winning final approval from parliament in retaliation for a U.S. law that targets Russian human rights abusers.

The mood among workers in the almost 40 Russia-accredited adoption agencies, which?have survived repeated bouts of political tensions and ever-tightening regulations over the years,?was near despair Friday.

"We have two cases of adoption in court and we're just asking ourselves the same question, what will be next?" says Lyudmila Babich, of the Cold Spring, New York-based Happy Families Center.

"We have no text of this law, nor any explanations of what's supposed to happen now. So, we're waiting," she says.

Any hope that Mr. Putin might impose some restraint upon a measure that even members of his own cabinet have criticized?as possibly illegal and diplomatically disruptive were dashed Thursday when Putin explicitly endorsed the adoption ban and other tough measures against US citizens working in Russia in televised remarks.

"I see no reason not to sign the law," Putin said.

He added that he would also sign a presidential decree to improve procedures for adopting Russian orphans and abandoned children domestically, and also boost measures to help children with serious disabilities and health problems ? who were previously the major pool of orphans made available for foreign adoption.

About 1,000 Russian children were adopted by US families in 2011, down from the annual average of 3,000 or so in the past decade, and only a small portion of the 120,000 Russian children who are considered eligible for adoption. Under Russian law, a child can be offered to prospective foreign parents only after having been rejected three times by Russian families.

Framed as 'selling' children

Russian nationalists argue that it's a shame for Russian children to be "sold" abroad, and several of the lawmakers who championed the Dima Yakovlev bill argued they will sponsor further efforts to ease the plight of Russia's huge numbers of institutionalized children.

Putin lent his support to the harshest critics of international adoption Thursday, by casually likening Russian children taken into US families to economic refugees.

"There are probably many places in the world where living standards are higher than ours. So what, are we going to send all our children there?" Putin said with sarcasm. "Maybe we should move there ourselves?"?

FCC streamlines rules for aircraft broadband, promotes widespread ...

FCC ADOPTS RULES TO PROMOTE DEPLOYMENT OF INTERNET SERVICES ONBOARD AIRCRAFT

Washington, D.C. ? The Federal Communications Commission has adopted a Report and Order establishing rules to help speed the deployment of Internet services onboard aircraft. The Commission's action enables broadband providers to meet increasing consumer demands and promotes the economic growth and job-creating impacts of ubiquitous broadband. This action also continues the FCC's efforts to update and streamline regulatory requirements across the agency. Since 2001, the Commission has authorized a number of companies, on an ad hoc basis, to operate Earth Stations Aboard Aircraft (ESAA), i.e., earth stations on aircraft communicating with Fixed-Satellite Service (FSS) geostationary-orbit (GSO) space stations. Installed on the exterior of the aircraft, the satellite antenna carries the signal to and from the aircraft, providing two-way, in-flight broadband services to passengers and flight crews. The Report and Order formalizes ESAA as a licensed application in the FSS and establishes a regulatory framework for processing applications while ensuring other radio service operations are protected from harmful interference. Rather than have to license on-board systems on an ad hoc basis, airlines will be able test systems that meet FCC standards, establish that they do not interfere with aircraft systems, and get FAA approval.
By reducing administrative burdens on both applicants and the Commission, the new rules should allow the Commission to process ESAA applications up to 50 percent faster, enhancing competition in an important sector of the mobile telecommunications market in the United States and promoting the widespread availability of Internet access to aircraft passengers.
Action by the Commission, December 20, 2012, by Notice of Proposed Rulemaking and Report and Order (FCC 12-161).

Health and Fitness Talk ? Nanomedicine ? The Medicine of the Future

by Kimberly Allen, RN

What is a nano?? It?s one billionth of a meter.? Which is tiny in the extreme.? Nanomedicine is defined as ?the medical application? of?nanotechnology.? ?There is currently research in numerous areas ranging from advanced drug delivery systems to in vivo imaging and nanoelectronics-based sensors.
Nanotechnology is one of the most exciting, happening things in medicine today.? One area that is extremely promising is the use of nanotechnology in drug delivery, especailly in cancer treatment.? There are various institutes accross the country that are researching different techniques for drug delivery using nanotechnology.? In all cases the goal is to be able to deliver the strong anticancer drugs directly to the cancer cells and killing them without harming the healthy cells in the area.? Scientists have discovered that they can take nanoparticles and cover them with cancer seeking proteins as well as fill them with chemotherapy drugs.? There is also a new nano-based compound known as BIND14 that has the ability to target tumors that is currently in human trials.? Researchers are reporting good results with no major saftey issues.? The nanoparticles were all loaded with docetaxel which is already an approved drug for cancer treatment.? Patients in the clinical trials had advanced or metastatic cancer and were given an injection of the nanoparticle containing the drug once every 3 weeks.? Scientists found that the drug would stay in the body for 2 days.? during that 2 days the drug would work on killing the tumor cells.? The results were promising.? In many patients the tumor growth was slowed, while in oothers the tumors have been shrinking and in still others completely vanishing.
Another researcher has developed a different method of using nanoparticles in treating cancer cells.? This method involves attatching nanoparticles to cancer cells and then illuminating them with either white, UV, or near infrared light.? The illuminating with light causes the nanoparticles to become super heated therefore burning the cancer cells while leaving the healthy cells unharmed.? This method has shown great promise in preclinical trials especially in killing melanomas and brain tumors cells.
Probably the most promising research in the area of nano drug delivery is gold nanoshells.? Gold? nanoshells are minute hollow spheres composed of gold atoms.? To give you an idea of just how tiny they are, the wave length of the light we see is 10 times longer than the diameter of these gold nanoshells.? Scientists discovered that by changing the size and thickness of the shell they can be made to be highly sensitive to the light in the near infrared spectrum.? Generally near infrared light passes through your body without doing any harm, but the gold shells that have been made to be sensitive to the light can be heated inside killing cancer cells without you even knowing it.? Though there has been research involving other gold shapes including rods and solid spheres, the nanoshell demonstrated the ability to absorb energy 50% better than any of the other shapes.? It?s crucial that each shell be able to absorb as much energy as possible which allows for the use of a lower overall dose of near infrared light.
There is also research in using gold nanoparticles as detecting devices.? There are numerous areas in which nanoparticles are being tested and developed including defeating viruses and vaccines.
For over 100 years scientists have been trying to kill the cancer cells without damaging the rest of the body and now with nanotechnology that goal seem?s to be in reach.? Many believe we are very close to being able to kill the cancer without the severe side effects of the current treatments.

Wall Street Week Ahead: Cliff may be a fear, but debt ceiling much scarier

(Reuters) - Investors fearing a stock market plunge - if the United States tumbles off the "fiscal cliff" next week - may want to relax.

But they should be scared if a few weeks later, Washington fails to reach a deal to increase the nation's debt ceiling because that raises the threat of a default, another credit downgrade and a panic in the financial markets.

Market strategists say that while falling off the cliff for any lengthy period - which would lead to automatic tax hikes and stiff cuts in government spending - would badly hurt both consumer and business confidence, it would take some time for the U.S. economy to slide into recession. In the meantime, there would be plenty of chances for lawmakers to make amends by reversing some of the effects.

That has been reflected in a U.S. stock market that has still not shown signs of melting down. Instead, it has drifted lower and become more volatile.

In some ways, that has let Washington off the hook. In the past, a plunge in stock prices forced the hand of Congress, such as in the middle of the financial crisis in 2008.

"If this thing continues for a bit longer and the result is you get a U.S. debt downgrade ... the risk is not that you lose two-and-a-half percent, the risk is that you lose ten and a half," said Jonathan Golub, chief U.S. equity strategist at UBS Equity Research, in New York.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said this week that the United States will technically reach its debt limit at the end of the year.

INVESTORS WARY OF JANUARY

The White House has said it will not negotiate the debt ceiling as in 2011, when the fight over what was once a procedural matter preceded the first-ever downgrade of the U.S. credit rating. But it may be forced into such a battle again. A repeat of that war is most worrisome for markets.

Markets posted several days of sharp losses in the period surrounding the debt ceiling fight in 2011. Even after a bill to increase the ceiling passed, stocks plunged in what was seen as a vote of "no confidence" in Washington's ability to function, considering how close lawmakers came to a default.

Credit ratings agency Standard & Poor's lowered the U.S. sovereign rating to double-A-plus, citing Washington's legislative problems as one reason for the downgrade from triple-A status. The benchmark S&P 500 dropped 16 percent in a four-week period ending August 21, 2011.

"I think there will be a tremendous fight between Democrats and Republicans about the debt ceiling," said Jon Najarian, a co-founder of online brokerage TradeMonster.com, in Chicago.

"I think that is the biggest risk to the downside in January for the market and the U.S. economy."

There are some signs in the options market that investors are starting to eye the January period with more wariness. The CBOE Volatility Index, or the VIX, the market's preferred indicator of anxiety, has remained at relatively low levels throughout this process, though on Thursday it edged above 20 for the first time since July.

More notable is the action in VIX futures markets, which shows a sharper increase in expected volatility in January than in later-dated contracts. January VIX futures are up nearly 23 percent in the last seven trading days, compared with a 13 percent increase in March futures and an 8 percent increase in May futures. That's a sign of increasing near-term worry among market participants.

The CBOE Volatility Index closed on Friday at 22.72, gaining nearly 17 percent to end at its highest level since June as details emerged of a meeting on Friday afternoon of President Barack Obama with Senate and House leaders from both parties where the president offered proposals similar to those already rejected by Republicans. Stocks slid in late trading and equity futures continued that slide after cash markets closed.

"I was stunned Obama didn't have another plan, and that's absolutely why we sold off," said Mike Shea, a managing partner and trader at Direct Access Partners LLC, in New York.

Obama offered hope for a last-minute agreement to avoid the fiscal cliff after a meeting with congressional leaders, although he scolded Congress for leaving the problem unresolved until the 11th hour.

"The hour for immediate action is here," he told reporters at a White House briefing. "I'm modestly optimistic that an agreement can be achieved."

The U.S. House of Representatives is set to convene on Sunday and continue working through the New Year's Day holiday. Obama has proposed maintaining current tax rates for all but the highest earners.

Consumers don't appear at all traumatized by the fiscal cliff talks, as yet. Helping to bolster consumer confidence has been a continued recovery in the housing market and growth in the labor market, albeit slow.

The latest take on employment will be out next Friday, when the U.S. Labor Department's non-farm payrolls report is expected to show jobs growth of 145,000 for December, in line with recent growth.

Consumers will see their paychecks affected if lawmakers cannot broker a deal and tax rates rise, but the effect on spending is likely to be gradual.

PLAYING DEFENSE

Options strategists have noted an increase in positions to guard against weakness in defense stocks such as General Dynamics because those stocks would be affected by spending cuts set for that sector. Notably, though, the PHLX Defense Index is less than 1 percent away from an all-time high reached on December 20.

This underscores the view taken by most investors and strategists: One way or another, Washington will come to an agreement to offset some effects of the cliff. The result will not be entirely satisfying, but it will be enough to satisfy investors.

"Expectations are pretty low at this point, and yet the equity market hasn't reacted," said Carmine Grigoli, chief U.S. investment strategist at Mizuho Securities USA, in New York. "You're not going to see the markets react to anything with more than a 5 (percent) to 7 percent correction."

Save for a brief 3.6 percent drop in equity futures late on Thursday evening last week after House Speaker John Boehner had to cancel a scheduled vote on a tax-hike bill due to lack of Republican support, markets have not shown the same kind of volatility as in 2008 or 2011.

A gradual decline remains possible, Golub said, if business and consumer confidence continues to take a hit on the back of fiscal cliff worries. The Conference Board's measure of consumer confidence fell sharply in December, a drop blamed in part on the fiscal issues.

"If Congress came out and said that everything is off the table, yeah, that would be a short-term shock to the market, but that's not likely," said Richard Weiss, a Mountain View, California-based senior money manager at American Century Investments.

"Things will be resolved, just maybe not on a good time table. All else being equal, we see any further decline as a buying opportunity."

New Home Sales in November

In each Economic Update, the Research staff analyzes recently released economic indicators and addresses what these indicators mean for REALTORS? and their clients. Today?s update discusses the latest new home sales data.

  • Sales of newly constructed homes rose in November by 4.4 percent from the prior month, and are higher by 15.3 percent from one year ago. The 377,000 annualized sales pace is the highest in nearly 3 years. However, there is ample room for further improvement to get us back to the pre-housing-bubble sales pace of 900,000 or so.
  • The median price of new homes jumped by 15 percent to $246,200. Higher copper and lumber prices are no doubt partly driving up the price of a newly built home. The faster rise in new home prices, with a widening gap against existing home prices, could be a forerunner for potential catch-up price gains for existing homes in upcoming years.
  • The inventory of newly constructed homes remains essentially at a 50-year low. Homebuilders need to ramp up production even further. Large national builders are tapping Wall Street funds to up construction activity. However, small local builders are having a difficult time obtaining construction loans.
  • On a technical note, this new home sales data are contract signings and not closings. Also, only single-family homes are included and not condos.

1 vs 2: Stanford, UConn women renew rivalry

Whether facing off in the national championship game, playing in the Final Four, or just meeting in the regular season, the two programs on opposite sides of the country have created compelling matchups.

The undefeated teams will renew their annual contest Saturday when the second-ranked Huskies (10-0) visit the No. 1 Cardinal (11-0).

"It's a rivalry for us, but more than that, it's a measuring stick," said Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer, whose Cardinal have held the top spot in the poll for the past six weeks. "When the ball goes up, nobody cares anything about rankings."

The last time the teams met in the Bay Area in 2010, the Cardinal ended the Huskies' NCAA record 90-game winning streak. UConn will try and return the favor by snapping Stanford's streak of 82 straight home victories.

"It's going to be two really competitive teams, it's going to be a dogfight," UConn senior Kelly Faris said. "Two years ago that's what it was."

On the boards, Stanford's 6-foot-3 Chiney Ogwumike will battle with UConn's 6-5 Stefanie Dolson and 6-4 freshman Breanna Stewart. The younger sister of All-American Nneka Ogwumike, who graduated from Stanford, is averaging 21.8 points and 12.8 rebounds for the Cardinal.

Stewart is averaging a team-high 16.6 points and 7.2 rebounds, while Dolson is contributing 11.7 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.

It marks the 51st meeting between the top two teams in the poll. The No. 1 seed holds a 31-19 lead. UConn and Stanford have been in three of those contests over the past few seasons with the Huskies winning all of them.

"The 1 versus 2 thing makes for better TV, but it doesn't change how we prepare," Stanford's Toni Kokenis said. "We are defending our home court, regardless of the opponent. But yeah, we ended their streak two years ago and I'm sure they want to do the same thing to us."

Stanford hasn't lost at Maples Pavilion since March 18, 2007, when Florida State beat the Cardinal in the second round of the NCAA tournament. UConn brought its streak to Stanford almost exactly two years ago only to see the Cardinal stop it with a 71-59 win in front of an enthusiastic crowd. VanDerveer expects a similar atmosphere Saturday.

"We're excited we're playing here," VanDerveer said. "Our team has played very well, but that's not the deciding factor. You have to make baskets and rebound and make stops. We know it's what you do on the court."

The Huskies, who beat Stanford in Hartford by 10 points last season, aren't concerned about ending the Cardinal's streak. They are just trying to improve.

"I don't think I'd go out there with the mindset that we have to break their streak," Faris said. "It's another game. But the whole streak thing, if you focus on that, you're not going to be doing the right thing."

Both coaches are aware that it's just one game in December with conference play about to start after the New Year.

"If you win on Saturday you know you beat a really good team," UConn coach Geno Auriemma said. "If you lose you know you got a lot of work to do to beat a really good team down the road."

Connecticut leads the series 7-6, including winning five of the last eight meetings ? dating back to 2005. Stanford, unlike a lot of other teams in the country, has been able to stay close to the Huskies in the losses, losing most by a dozen points or less.

"You have two of the best offensive teams in the country, not to say we're going to see who can win 110-109," he said. "We try to make scoring and scoring often our priority. Maybe that's why it's become such a great rivalry."

Unlike other rivalries in the sport that have ended during the past few years because of conference realignment or teams refusing to play each other, UConn and Stanford will continue for at least two more seasons. They will open next season in Connecticut.

"As long as Stanford wants to play we'll play them. I have a lot of respect for them, obviously, as a university and certainly their coaching staff," Auriemma said. "They're great people. And the kind of people they recruit are great people. So I'm thrilled that it was done. Really. I think that's a great thing for us."

After playing Stanford, UConn will head to Oregon before going home to open up its Big East schedule.

"Playing games on the road at the early part of the season is very important," Auriemma said. "Coming out here and playing Stanford and knowing how hard it is to play them, especially here. It's a great opportunity for us at this point in the season. As soon as we're done on this trip we have Notre Dame at home. Playing two teams in the top five in the country in a matter of a week or so is exactly what we need right about now."

Billy Crystal channels real-life role in "Parental Guidance"

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - After a decade away from the big screen, funnyman Billy Crystal has mined his real-life experiences as a grandfather and is back in the holiday season movie "Parental Guidance."

The film, which opened in U.S. theaters on Christmas, stars Crystal as a recently fired baseball announcer, who agrees to watch his three grandchildren with his wife (Bette Midler), while his daughter and her husband go on a business trip.

Crystal, 64, sat down with Reuters to talk about the film, being a grandparent and why he won't host the Oscars ceremony anymore.

Q: You have not been on the big screen in a starring role since 2002's "Analyze That." Did you miss making movies?

A: "I spent over four years doing my one-man Broadway show, '700 Sundays' and didn't care about doing movies. I just so love being in front of live audiences. The play is more satisfying than anything. I'm not interrupted by planes flying overhead, waiting for them to light and all those gruesome slow things on a movie. But really, the last five years were spent getting this movie made."

Q: How did "Parental Guidance" become your return to film?

A: "When I wrote the first story for this movie, my wife Janice and I babysat for our daughter Jenny while she went away with her husband. We had six days with their girls, all alone. It was an eye-opener. When you're not used to that energy, it's tough. On the 7th day I rested and came in to the office and said, 'Here's the idea for the movie.'"

Q: What was eye-opening about those six days?

A: "The eye-opener was the bible that we were given before they left town about what to say (to the kids), what to do, all the rules, don't do this, don't do that, this child has to be taken here. They have my respect of how they programmed their days and weeks. It's insane what they have to do nowadays for schooling and parenting. It's wild."

Q: Quite a difference between your childhood and the grandkids' childhood, right?

A: "When I was a kid growing up, it was basically 'Go outside and play and I'll see you at dinner.' There was no thought that there were bad people out there. There was such a carefree wonderful trust which forced you to use your imagination, which also bonded you with the best of you, and your friends. We didn't have that 'inside' thing like videogames. My only 'inside' thing was watching the Yankees. Otherwise everything was outside."

Q: Speaking of the Yankees, your well-documented lifelong love of baseball is incorporated in to the film with your character being a ball-game announcer. That must have been fun to do.

A: "I love the game and I thought it was a really interesting occupation we hadn't seen before. And a good one for me to play because I love it. I wanted my character to have something he loved doing where I didn't have to fake it."

Q: In being absent from the silver screen for a while, did you find that the movie-making business has changed much?

A: "The studios are so concerned with quadrants (capturing four major demographic groups of moviegoers - men, woman and those over and under 25). I'd never heard of these things when I was in my early years of making movies. You just did them. There was no interference. Now it's a whole different ball game. They're so worried: 'Who's going to come?' Well, there's 77 million American who are babyboomers. That's a huge audience who wants to laugh and have a story told to them that doesn't have bombs and spies and killing."

Q: Does "Parental Guidance" reflect where are you now at this stage of your life?

A: "I was fortunate to be in a great romantic comedy about falling in love (1989's 'When Harry Met Sally'). I wrote the original story for my turning 40, 'City Slickers' (in 1991), which became a huge hit and a very liked movie. And now 'Parental Guidance' happened at this point in my life. I relate to it as a parent and a grandparent."

Q: You will be a grandfather for the fourth time in March. What do you like best about that role?

A: "It's so hard to understand how you can love someone so much that's not yours, but extensions of you. I'm always so moved seeing my girls pregnant, and seeing them move on in their lives. I'm going to turn 65 on March 14. My wife's birthday is the 16th. The baby's due the 18th. So we've got maybe a straight flush happening here. That would be the greatest present of all - a healthy new baby."

Q: Last year you hosted the Oscar ceremony for the ninth time, making you the second most-used host after the late Bob Hope. Are you gunning for his title?

A: "I'm not even close. I've done 9, he's done 19 and neither one of us are doing it again. It's hard to say, 'Can't wait to do it again,' but I can wait."

Mark Sanchez To Start For Jets Due To Greg McElroy Concussion

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. ? The New York Jets' wacky quarterback situation took yet another twist.

Greg McElroy has a concussion ? which he didn't reveal until Thursday ? and will be replaced by Mark Sanchez as the New York Jets' starting quarterback in the season finale at Buffalo on Sunday.

Coach Rex Ryan walked into his news conference before practice, took the podium and opened with: "You're not going to believe this."

McElroy, preparing to make his second NFL start in place of the benched Sanchez, was lifting weights Thursday morning and started experiencing headaches, Ryan said. McElroy went to the team's training staff and then revealed he was suffering concussion-like symptoms after being sacked 11 times in the Jets' 27-17 loss to San Diego last Sunday.

McElroy and head trainer John Mellody then went to Ryan to tell the coach the news.

"We come to find out that Greg wasn't exactly truthful with our training staff after the game," said Ryan, who acknowledged he was "stunned" to hear it. "He never disclosed that he had symptoms after the game to our trainers. Right now, he's being evaluated for a concussion."

Ryan said there was no way he would play McElroy against the Bills and the third-stringer will "definitely be out." McElroy had been listed on the injury report Wednesday with a mild abdominal strain, but was a full participant in practice and was expected to play without any issues.

"I admire his courage and everything else, but you have to be truthful and I think that's the lesson learned here with the medical staff," Ryan said. "The fact he really wanted to play, I understand the competitive side of Greg and all that, but the most important thing is the health of the players.

"Obviously, I feel fortunate that something like this showed up without him going out there and putting himself in harm's way."

Ryan chose to start Sanchez over Tim Tebow because the team has just two practices and a walkthrough to prepare before the game.

"Mark has had success earlier in the season against Buffalo and he's very familiar with them," Ryan said. "That's the reason I'm going with Mark."

After finding out about McElroy's condition, Ryan spoke with both Sanchez and Tebow to tell them of his decision.

"Obviously, Tim's not happy with that, as you'd expect," Ryan said.

Sanchez was benched for the first time in his four-year career after turning the ball over five times at Tennessee on Dec. 17. McElroy leapfrogged Tebow on the depth chart to start against the Chargers.

The news comes on the heels of some tension between Ryan and Tebow last week, when the popular backup quarterback told the coach he was "disappointed" at not getting the start and wanted to play "regular quarterback." ESPN New York first reported Sunday that Tebow asked out of the wildcat, and a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed that to The Associated Press. But Tebow insisted Wednesday that he did not ask out of doing anything and acknowledged that Ryan might have misinterpreted what he said.

The two met again last Friday to clear the air, and Tebow reiterated that he was willing to do anything the team asked him to do. Tebow will be the No. 2 quarterback on Sunday at Buffalo, and could play ? but it won't be as the starter.

"Obviously, he'd like a shot at it," Ryan said, "but with the situation the way it is, it's a short window, really, to get the preparation time in and I just think it's best for our football team."

Nelson Mandela released from hospital in South Africa

View images of civil rights leader Nelson Mandela, who went from anti-apartheid activist to prisoner to South Africa's first black president.

By NBC News staff and wire services

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- Former South African President Nelson Mandela was released from a hospital in Pretoria on Wednesday evening, a government spokesman told NBC News.

Mandela, 94, had been admitted more than two weeks ago for what were described as routine tests but then was treated for a recurring lung infection and then underwent surgery to remove gallstones.

Mac Maharja, a spokesman for President Jacob Zuma, told NBC News that doctors were satisfied with?Mandela's progess and that the anti-apartheid hero will receive "high care" at his Johannesburg home.

Zuma had visited Mandela on Christmas Day and had said he was "in good spirits."

"He was happy to have visitors on this special day and is looking much better. The doctors are happy with the progress that he is making," said Zuma.

Mandela, who came to power in historic elections in 1994 after decades struggling against apartheid, remains a symbol of resistance to racism and injustice at home and around the world.?

He has a history of lung problems dating back to when he contracted tuberculosis while in jail as a political prisoner. But this is his longest stay in hospital since he was released from prison in 1990.

He spent time in a Johannesburg hospital in 2011 with a respiratory condition, and again in February this year because of abdominal pains though he was released the following day after a keyhole examination showed there was nothing serious.

Zuma, who has just been re-elected as president of the ruling African National Congress party, last week described Mandela's condition as serious.

"The Mandela family truly appreciates all the support they are receiving from the public. That is what keeps them going at this difficult time," said Zuma.?

Mandela spent 27 years in prison, including 18 years on the windswept Robben Island off Cape Town.?

After his release, he used his popularity to push for reconciliation between whites and blacks. This reconciliation is the bedrock of the post-apartheid "Rainbow Nation."

Sworn in as South Africa's first black president in 1994, Mandela stepped down in 1999 after one term in office and has largely been absent from public life for the last decade.

His fragile health has prevented him from making any public appearances in South Africa, though he has continued to receive high-profile domestic and international visitors, including former U.S. President Bill Clinton in July.

Mandela now will receive treatment at his home in Houghton, a suburb of Johannesburg.?

Home prices rose in October, survey shows

1 hr.

Single-family home prices rose in October for nine months in a row, reinforcing the view the domestic real estate market is improving and should bolster the economy in 2013, a closely watched survey showed on Wednesday.?

The S&P/Case Shiller composite index of 20 metropolitan areas gained 0.7 percent in October on a seasonally adjusted basis, stronger than the 0.5 percent rise forecast by economists polled by Reuters.?

"Looking over this report, and considering other data on housing starts and sales, it is clear that the housing recovery is gathering strength," David Blitzer, chairman of the index committee at Standard & Poor's, said in a statement.?

While record low mortgage rates and modest job growth should keep the housing recovery on track, analysts cautioned home prices face downward pressure from a likely pickup in the sales of foreclosed and distressed properties and reduced buying investors and speculators.?

Prices in the 20 cities rose 4.3 percent year over year, beating expectations for a rise of 4.0 percent.?

Las Vegas posted the biggest monthly rise on a seasonally adjusted basis at 2.4 percent, followed by a 1.7 percent increase in San Diego, the latest Case-Shiller data showed.?

"Higher year-over-year price gains plus strong performances in the Southwest and California, regions that suffered during the housing bust, confirm that housing is now contributing to the economy," Blitzer said.?

Housing contributed 10 percent to the overall U.S. economic growth in the third quarter, while the sector represented less than 3 percent of gross domestic product, he said.?

Last week, the government said U.S. GDP expanded at a stronger-than-expected 3.1 percent annualized pace in the third quarter.?

Excluding seasonal factors, however, home prices in 12 of the 20 cities fell in October from September as home values tend to decline in fall and winter, Blitzer said.?

Chicago experienced the largest non-seasonally adjusted decline at 1.5 percent, followed by a 1.4 percent fall in Boston.?

Eight killed in Yemen clashes; attacks in capital target officers

SANAA (Reuters) - At least six militants and two soldiers were killed in Yemen on Tuesday in fighting near a damaged oil pipeline east of the capital Sanaa, a defense ministry official and residents said.

Separately, gunmen and bombers targeted three senior military officers and the transport minister in a series of attacks in the capital Sanaa.

In one incident, two gunmen riding a motorbike shot dead Brigadier Fadel Mohammed Ali, an adviser to the minister of defense, outside the ministry's offices in Sanaa, a police source said. Further details were not immediately available.

Gunmen fired at the home of Transport Minister Waed Batheeb, wounding two of his guards, a transport ministry official said. A colonel was seriously wounded in an attack by gunmen and another officer survived a thwarted bomb attack on his car.

The fighting in turbulent Maarib province broke out when government troops backed by air strikes tried to secure the pipeline and repair damage inflicted last month by local militants, the official said.

He added that the army controlled the area surrounding the pipeline after Tuesday's clashes.

Yemen's oil and gas pipelines have repeatedly been sabotaged by Islamist fighters or tribesmen since an uprising erupted last year, causing fuel shortages and slashing export earnings for the impoverished country.

Yemen's stability is a leading security goal for the United States and Gulf Arab allies because of its strategic position next to top oil exporter Saudi Arabia and shipping lanes, and because it is home to one of the most active wings of al Qaeda.

Under an agreement reached earlier this month between tribal chiefs and the government, tribes in Maarib were meant to stop militants from attacking the pipeline in return for a halt to air strikes in the area.

A local official said troops were deployed on Tuesday after tribesmen failed to secure the pipeline or to hand over fighters involved in the killings of 17 army officers and soldiers in an ambush earlier in December. They were killed while inspecting the pipeline.

The affiliation of the militants in Maarib is unclear. Local sources said some had links to al Qaeda, while others were involved in kidnapping foreigners to pressure the government to release jailed kinsmen.

OFFICER WOUNDED IN CAPITAL

Yemen-based Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has mounted operations in Saudi Arabia and attempted attacks against the United States, which has stepped up strikes by drones.

In the capital, the ministry of defense said one man was arrested on Tuesday for planting a bomb in the car of an officer at the Central Security Forces. The attempt to blow up the car was foiled, the ministry said. Colonel Sameer al-Gharbani, an officer in the Republican Guard, was critically wounded in an attack by unidentified gunmen, a source at the Guard said.

The string of attacks happened less than a week after President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi overhauled the armed forces as part of a Gulf-brokered power-transfer plan that helped ease former President Ali Abdullah Saleh from power in February.

Biggest Media Departures And Arrivals Of 2012

The past year in media saw on-air talent switch networks, new shows launch, publications fold, hosts leave, leadership shake-ups and more.

The most notable departures and arrivals occurred on morning television programs across the broadcast networks. The arguably worst-handled departure was "Today" co-host Ann Curry's teary exit from the NBC morning news program. Her departure sent the cash cow into troubled waters filled with declining ratings, gossip-fueled press reports, and what some considered an image problem.

Over at ABC, co-host Robin Roberts took medical leave after being diagnosed with a rare blood and bone marrow disorder, MDS. And ABC's mid-morning show "Live! With Kelly" found its new co-host in Michael Strahan. While at CBS, former "CBS This Morning" host Erica Hill was replaced with the network's chief White House correspondent Norah O'Donnell. Hill landed at NBC's "Today" show to host the program's weekend edition.

But multiple changes occurred behind the scenes in the cable news industry as well?notably Jeff Zucker's appointment as CNN's new president. However arrivals and departures were not just limited to TV. The Newspaper, magazine, and online industries saw shake-ups as well?most notable being Newsweek publishing its final print edition just before the company moved to an all-digital format.

Take a look at the slideshow below to see the year in media arrivals, departures and shake-ups. These slides are in no particular order.

  • Ann Curry Leaves "Today"

In a messy morning TV shake-up, Ann Curry was ousted from "Today" one year she took over as co-host. She spent more than a decade on the show. The program has not yet fully recovered from the departure as many viewers site the network's treatment of Curry as the reason why they tuned away.

  • Savannah Guthrie Replaces Ann Curry At "Today"

Shortly after Curry left "Today," Savannah Guthrie was named as co-host. Guthrie joined the "Today" show's 9:00 a.m. hour one year earlier, when Curry was promoted to co-host.

  • Matt Lauer's Popularity Fades

The beloved NBC morning host's popularity dwindled after Ann Curry left "Today" as some viewers blamed Lauer for her departure. Rumors swirled in tabloids that Lauer was involved in the decision. NBC News chief Steve Capus and "Today's" then-executive producer Jim Bell repeatedly defended Lauer in the press, stressing that the he was not involved with the network's decision to replace Curry with Savannah Guthrie.

  • Willie Geist Joins "Today"

"Morning Joe" co-host and frequent "Today" guest host officially joined the NBC News morning show. He still appears on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" from 6-7:00 a.m., then crosses the plaza to host the 9:00 a.m. hour of "Today."

  • Norah O'Donnell Joins "CBS This Morning"

CBS' chief White House correspondent Norah O'Donnell joined the network's morning show over the summer.

  • Erica Hill Leaves "CBS This Morning" For "Today"

Erica Hill previously co-hosted "CBS This Morning" with Charlie Rose and Gayle King, but was replaced earlier this year. She recently joined the "Today" show's weekend edition and co-hosts the program alongside Lester Holt on Saturdays and Sundays.

  • Ryan Seacrest Joins NBC News As Olympics Correspondent For "Today"

Ryan Seacrest joined NBC News just before the Olympics as a correspondent. He traveled to London with the "Today" show and appeared on the program a number of times. Seacrest, a large presence on the E! that, like NBC Universal, is owned by Comcast, was widely rumored to eventually replace Matt Lauer when he leaves "Today."

  • Executive Producer Jim Bell Leaves "Today"

After seven years as the "Today" show's executive producer, Jim Bell left the morning show for a role with NBC Sports. Bill executive produced the network's coverage of the 2012 London Olympics, which brought in record ratings and revenue, despite complaints from viewers. The departure seemed almost inevitable after "Today" experienced a year filled with declining ratings and a nasty anchor shake-up.

  • "Live! With Kelly And Michael" Launches

After Regis Philbin left "Live!" at the end of 2011, the ABC morning show announced the addition of Michael Strahan as co-host in September.

  • Robin Roberts Takes Medical Leave

"GMA" co-host Robin Roberts went on medical leave from the ABC morning show in September, after being diagnosed with the rare blood and bone marrow disorder, MDS. "GMA" has kept viewers abreast of her recovery journey.

  • George Stephanopoulos Returns To "This Week"

George Stephanopoulos returned to ABC News' Sunday public affairs show "This Week" after Christiane Amanpour left the show in December 2011. He previously anchored the morning show for eight years before Amanpour, who anchored the show for a little more than one year.

  • "Face The Nation" Extends To 1 Hour

Bob Schieffer's dream finally came true when CBS' Sunday public affairs program "Face The Nation" extended the show's length from 30 minutes to a full hour.

  • MSNBC Launches Melissa Harris-Perry's Weekend Show

Melissa Harris-Perry's new show launched shortly into 2012. Previously, Harris-Perry frequently filled-in for hosts Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O'Donnell.

  • Newsweek Ends Its Print Publication

Newsweek/The Daily Beast chief Tina Brown announced that the company will be transitioning to an all-digital format in 2013 and ending its print edition in 2012.

  • Kate White Leaves Cosmopolitan

White left Cosmopolitan after 14 years.

  • Marcus Brachli Steps Down As Washington Post Editor

Brauchli stepped down as editor of the Washington Post amidst rumors that he clashed with Post publisher Katharine Weymouth. He was replaced by Boston Globe editor Marty Baron.

  • New Orleans' Time-Picayune Cuts Back Print Edition

The daily New Orleans newspaper cut back to printing only three days per week, making New Orleans the biggest city in the United States without a daily newspaper.

  • Mark Thompson Joins The New York Times

Mark Thompson began his tenure as New York Times CEO amidst scandal. News broke that the BBC program "Newsnight" scratched an investigative report outing famed British broadcaster Jimmy Savile as a serial child sex offender. Thompson was director general of the BBC when the decision was made.

  • George Entwistle Resigns From BBC

George Entwistle resigned as director general of the BBC after the Jimmy Savile scandal struck the iconic broadcasting company.

  • The Daily Folds

News Corp.'s daily iPad news publication folded almost two years after it launched. The application was hailed as a wave of the future when it debuted, but failed to resonate with a large enough audience to sustain it.

  • HuffPost Live Launches

The Huffington Post debuted its video streaming network in April 2012.

  • Jeff Zucker Joins CNN

CNN Worldwide President Jim Walton stepped down from his post at the end of 2012. Former NBC Universal chief Jeff Zucker, famous for his nasty late night feud with Conan O'Brien, was named CNN's new chief.

  • CNN Launches "Early Start" And "Starting Point"

CNN's Soledad O'Brien returned to the mornings after the network debuted two new shows in 2012: "Early Start" from 5-7:00 a.m.; and "Starting Point" from 7-9:00 a.m. O'Brien hosts later show.

  • "Fox & Friends First" Launches

To compete with MSNBC's "Way Too Early" and CNN's "Early Start," Fox News debuted its early morning show, "Fox & Friends First."

  • Keith Olbermann Fired From Current TV

Keith Olbermann was fired from Current TV earlier this year. He sued the network, which then led Current TV to countersue. A nasty legal battle ensued. Olbermann was replaced by former New York governor Eliot Spitzer, who formerly co-hosted a program on CNN.

  • Dylan Ratigan Leaves MSNBC

Dylan Ratigan abruptly left MSNBC in June.

  • MSNBC Launches "The Cycle"

Dylan Ratigan's departure led MSNBC to launch "The Cycle," a news commentary show with four co-hosts.

  • "Katie" Debuts

Katie Couric's daytime television show "Katie" debuted in September to strong ratings. The newly appointed CNN chief, Jeff Zucker, served as the show's executive producer. He will step down from his post in mid-January.

  • "Anderson Live" Debuts And Gets Canceled

Anderson Cooper's daytime talk show went through a revamp after its first season, but was ultimately canceled.

By Request, My Family Eggnog Recipe - - Portland Food and Drink

Re-posted from 2009

This is a recipe my father used back in the 40?s. Many years ago, I found it among his things, but never made it until tonight. Now I will never make any other version. It?s really airy yet creamy, with just the right balance of booze.

I Twitter/Facebooked about this tonight, and am posting it here after several requests, after all, we still have New Year?s to go through!

Note that this recipe uses raw eggs. If this scares you, I doubt you?d be on this site anyway, but normal warnings apply. Use good, clean eggs and break them correctly (not on the side of a bowl).

Egg Nog

Beat 8 egg whites until stiff peaks.

Add 1/2 cup sugar and beat until incorporated. Set aside for a moment.

Beat 8 egg yolks and 1/2 cup sugar.

Put the whites back on the mixer, and fold in the beaten yolks

At a slower speed, add 1 qt heavy cream, 1 pt whole milk, beat some more.

Add 2 cups rum and 1/2 cup bourbon.

Take 20 mg Lipitor.

Pour into glasses, dust with freshly ground nutmeg

Call cab.

*uses raw egg. Follow normal precautions i.e. not drinking if you are pregnant (not that you would!) etc. Google for information if you are uncertain.

Whether you agree or disagree, you can always count on my unbiased opinion. I don't take free meals, and the restaurants don't know when, or if, I am coming."

Heavy Pets - Culture Room, Fort Lauderdale - December 21 - Fort ...

So, the world didn't exactly come to an end on Friday. But something major definitely went down at?Culture Room, where Greenhouse Lounge and the Heavy Pets, with special guest Roosevelt Collier, jammed out an epic end-of-the world party. If any sort of an apocalypse was gonna happen, this was where we wanted to be.?

The Heavy Pets took to the stage in the most potent, assertive show we have seen from?them yet. They have become local staples, playing (much needed) afterparties around town for major acts like Umphrey's McGee, but this concert made a clear statement that they are a headlining act in their own right.

First of all, we made sure to arrive early on Friday because we missed out on Greenhouse Lounge's opening set for Papadosio a couple weeks ago, a big mistake which we were determined to rectify. The Jacksonville-based trio weave a soundscape of jam, ?jjazz, electro, and funk that proves "jamtronica" is not only a legitimate genre, but an entirely new musical frontier.?

Now, we knew that a concert headlining the Heavy Pets would be exactly as awesome as it was. But the real star of the night was Robert Collier, the steel pedal guitarist who sat in for nearly half of the Pets' set. You may have heard him around town as a member of the Lee Boys, a Miami-based soul brigade made up of an extremely talented crop of brothers and nephews. We'll call it a great case of musical genes. Collier made an appearance with the Heavy Pets last month at Bear Creek, and it went down so well that we can only assume they wanted to make it happen again just in case the world truly did implode on itself.?
Over an hour into the set, Collier joined the Heavy Pets onstage for a steelled-up medley of Heavy Pets gems, old and new: "Xylophone", "Help Me Help You," a track from the newly-released EP, The Everywhere Sessions, Vol. 1, and "Girl You Make Me Stupid," a crowd favorite that has become something of a Heavy Pets concert staple since the release of their debut double-disc album, Whale, in ?2007. "Girl You Make Me Stupid" was a highlight not only on account of Collier's presence, but also due to funky vocals and a searing solo from Jim Wuest on keyboards.

The Heavy Pets were also joined by local songstress Leiah Siciliano (who, at first beer-goggled glance, we kinda thought was Alanis Morissette), who lent her vocals to "Love Gigantic."?

The Heavy Pets have been making waves at major Florida events such as Bear Creek and Art Basel this fall, and this year has definitely marked a period of progression for the group. With backing from local tastemakers Brotherly Love Productions, the Heavy Pets have quickly become the most beloved jam band in SoFla and most certainly beyond (we're not sure how far we can extend our own personal taste, but they're awesome).?

The apocalyptic get-down closed out with a drawn-out rendition (with help from Collier) of "The Day the Sun Forgot to Rise," a new track from? The Everywhere Sessions, Vol. 1.?A nod to the apocalypse? Perhaps. But now that the world hasn't ended, we can confidently start to look forward to the Pets' next SoFla appearances. They'll spend the holidays playing up north (lame), but will return to play some excellent after parties for Jam Cruise pre- and post-shows in Fort Lauderdale.?

Tamiflu Approved By FDA For Infants With New Flu Symptoms

Dec 21 (Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday expanded the use of Tamiflu, the flu drug from Roche , to children as young as two weeks old who have shown flu symptoms for no more than two days.
The FDA said the drug cannot be used to prevent flu infection in this age group. The drug is currently approved as both a flu treatment and preventative flu drug for children ages 1 and older, and adults. It aims to help lessen the length and severity of the flu.
Tamiflu was approved in 1999 and is distributed in the United States by Genentech, part of Roche. It was co-developed by Gilead Sciences. Its most common side effects include vomiting and diarrhea.
The FDA said its expanded use is based on extrapolating data from previous study results in adults and older children, and supporting studies by the U.S. National Institutes of Health and Roche.
Tamiflu, which had peak sales of $3 billion in 2009 because of the H1N1 swine flu epidemic, is approved by regulators worldwide but some researchers claim there is little evidence it works and have asked Roche to hand over data so they can study its effectiveness.
