Foundation Will Hold Politician-Studded Summit Glorifying Africa's Longest-Serving Dictator

Equatorial Guinea's President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo is seen in Lisbon, Friday, July 25, 2008.

Equatorial Guinea's President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo is seen in Lisbon, Friday, July 25, 2008.

The biennial summit organized by the Leon H. Sullivan Foundation, located in the heart of K Street, has for two decades been a place for world leaders to convene and talk about solutions for Africa with the help of the African diaspora.

Previous attendees include presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, General Colin Powell and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

And yet this year, the foundation?named after Baptist minister and Martin Luther King-era civil rights leader Rev. Leon Sullivan?has made an odd choice about the location and host of its summit. This August, the Sullivan Summit will be held in the central West African country of Equatorial Guinea, with host "His Excellency Teodoro Obiang-Mbasago."

[See:?Latest political cartoons]

The foundation boasts on its website that under President Obiang's rule, tiny Equatorial Guinea has "enjoyed the most productive period of peace, stability and development in its history."

But the country has also developed one of the worst human rights records under Obiang, who since the death of Moammar Gaddafi holds the title of Africa's longest-ruling leader.

When presidential elections were held in 2009, Obiang received almost 100 percent of the vote in an election widely seen as fraudulent. Equatorial Guinea ranked miserably in Freedom House's "2012 Freedom in the World" report, as well as the Committee to Protect Journalist's study of most censored countries. Recent State Department reports decry incidents of "arbitrary arrest, detention, and incommunicado detention" under Obiang and Human Rights Watch calls Obiang's rule a "dictatorship."

Nevertheless, the Sullivan Foundation goes on to praise Obiang for "the advancement Equatorial Guinea has made in human development and the human rights arena."

The group also lauds Equatorial Guinea's income per capita, which the foundation notes has risen to one of the highest on the continent. Much of that income, however, is concentrated in the hands of a few?namely Obiang, his family, and his associates, according to a 2011 investigation by the Department of Justice.

The question, then, becomes this: Why is a foundation committed to a better Africa promoting a dictator continually decried for his human rights and other abuses?

A source close to the Sullivan Foundation tells Whispers that the foundation is hard up for cash, and that the now oil-rich government of Equatorial Guinea is happy to fill that gap.

The foundation insists that every country that has hosted a summit has supported them financially. "We cannot do the summits without that support," Sullivan Summit spokesman Aly Ramji told Whispers. "So yes, the Equatorial Guinea government is supporting us."

Ramji said Equatorial Guinea was chosen because the country "has been marred by a lot of negative press," and the foundation hopes to change that. "There are a lot of new development programs in Equatorial Guinea," Ramji said, though he did not share what those programs were. "We want to communicate this to the world."

The Sullivan Foundation has not yet released the summit's guest list, but Ramji says that a number of members of Congress and other decision-makers from Washington are expected to attend.

Joe Kraus, program and development director at human rights group Equatorial Guinea Justice, calls it "a shame" that a foundation associated with Reverend Leon Sullivan "is now being used to launder the image of the world's longest-serving ruler."

The foundation already once created a stir over its seeming support of Obiang, when Equatorial Guinea's leader received the foundation's Beacon for Africa award late last year, an award earlier given to Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton and Condoleezza Rice.

After facing fierce criticism for the decision, Sullivan Foundation President and CEO Hope Masters said the award was actually going to the African Union, not Obiang, and that the confusion was because Obiang served as chairman of the African Union in 2011.

"HORRIFYING mistake, [the Leon H. Sullivan Foundation] is NOT honoring Obiang as a champion of Democracy! African Union being honored," she tweeted in October.

The Equatorial Guinea government, however, has continued to maintain that the award is Obiang's.

HBT: Greinke strong, but loses Angels debut

Without the injured Mike Trout at the top of the lineup, the Angels got nothing going offensively Sunday ?and took a 2-0 loss to the Rays in Zack Greinke?s debut.

Greinke, who was acquired from the Brewers on Friday, was strong in striking out eight over seven innings, but Jeremy Hellickson was better, blanking the Angels on two hits over six innings. Kyle Farnsworth, Joel Peralta and Fernando Rodney ? the last two former Angels ? finished the Rays? second shutout in two days.

The loss was Greinke?s first in a home start since July 31, 2010, when he was still a member of the Royals. He went 15-0 during his 23 starts at Miller Park as a member of the Brewers.

Greinke allowed both Rays runs after pitching scoreless ball for five innings. The Rays led off the sixth and seventh innings with doubles and scored one run each time. The second run came on a wild pitch.

Greinke has now gone six straight starts without a win. He?ll miss the four-game showdown in Texas this week and make his next start against the White Sox on Friday. That could work out for him; he had his best start of the year against the White Sox in interleague play, pitching nine scoreless innings back on June 22.

Obama, Romney neck-and-neck in vice-is-nice Nevada

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? They're called "the cooler crowd," and Las Vegas is greeting them with ambivalence: A stream of post-recession tourists ready for fun but watching their wallets.

They gamble less extravagantly than the typical visitor of the past, skimp on tips, sometimes lug coolers and microwaves into their hotel rooms to save on drinks and meals. They're a mixed blessing in a state hit as hard as any by the economic downturn and still struggling to recover.

They're not the only visitors, of course.

President Barack Obama and his Republican rival, Mitt Romney have been here, competing strenuously for Nevada's six electoral votes in what is one of the most contested states. The candidates, too, have gotten a mixed reception. Some kingpins of the gambling industry are writing big campaign checks, but many Nevadans have other matters on their mind, namely foreclosures, layoffs, wage cuts, medical bills.

At the MGM Grand, one of the 30-plus lavish gambling resorts along the Las Vegas Strip, bell captain Craig Houston gets a good look at both the high rollers and the "cooler crowd" streaming into the grandiose lobby. Though many visitors are stingier than in the past, the flow of visitors has rebounded to pre-recession levels, and industry analysts say 2012 could end with a record.

By some measures, Houston is fortunate. In the state with the highest jobless rate, at 11.6 percent, he's back at work after being laid off from another resort in 2008, going through bankruptcy and losing his home. He's now a renter, and he tells his grown sons to stay out of the casino business. "You get upset that you're not making the money you used to," he says.

Houston, 50, says he's weary of political bickering and wishes for more focused efforts to boost the middle class. He's not overwhelmed by Obama's performance, but expects to vote for him anyway.

"Most people in this community have been in survival mode," said D. Taylor, secretary-treasurer of a hotel workers union. "Of the things that are important to them, politics are about 18th on the checklist."

___

For many in the state, their wish list for the election is short.

"Mostly people will be looking at national economy ? looking for a broad recovery which gives people elsewhere more discretionary income to come here," said David Schwartz, director of the Center for Gaming Research at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Obama won the state in 2008, thanks in part to strong backing from union members and other working-class voters alarmed by the economic collapse. Four years later, Nevada is still beleaguered. It has lost 12 percent of its jobs during that span, the highest rate in the nation, and its foreclosure rate also remains one of the worst.

Given the pain inflicted by Nevada's housing crisis, it's not surprising that Obama's campaign ran an ad attempting to use Romney's own words against him.

"Don't try and stop the foreclosure process," Romney said during a visit to Las Vegas last year. "Let it run its course and hit the bottom."

Nelson Araujo of the Financial Guidance Center, which counsels hard-up Latino families in Las Vegas, said many of his clients were grateful to the Obama administration for federal initiatives, such as the U.S. Treasury's Hardest Hit Fund, that enabled some low-income homeowners to avoid foreclosures.

"Because we're such a hard-hit state, people want to know who's going to bring that aid," said Araujo, expressing skepticism that only private-sector efforts would suffice.

In greater Las Vegas, the state's economic engine and home to 72 percent of its people, the picture is mixed. At the high end, sales of luxury condominium units at the Trump International Hotel are surging, with many of the buyers from Asia.

The real estate and home-building sectors are improving, but slowly. Thousands of construction workers remain jobless.

Kolleen Kelley, president of the Las Vegas-area Realtors association, said her colleagues are bracing for slow progress, regardless of the election outcome.

"I don't know that they're blaming any one person or one party," she said. "This is not a simple fix. It's going to take a longer period of time to get us out from under."

Despite some recent diversification, Nevada's economy is more concentrated than virtually any other state. The tourism/gambling sector accounts for more than one-quarter of Nevada's 1.14 million nonfarm jobs, and 13 of the 20 largest employers are casino/hotel companies.

Thanks to intensive organizing in that industry, Nevada stands out as a rare stronghold for private sector unions. The hotel and casino operators, unlike counterparts in some other sectors, can't threaten to outsource or relocate, giving the unions some extra leverage.

Taylor's union, Culinary Workers Local 226, claims 60,000 members in Las Vegas. They're waitresses, housekeepers, doormen and others at nearly all the main hotels on the Strip and most of the less-glamorous establishments in downtown. At the union hall, in a low-rise industrial area north of the Strip, members said their contracts helped them endure the worst of the recession, although there was no immunity to hard times.

Tammy Wells, 47, a cocktail waitress at the Luxor, said her tip allocation was cut by half at one point, dropping her annual earnings from about $40,000 to below $20,000. Her pay is now on the upswing, but not yet back to its peak, she said.

Local 226 gave Obama one of his first big labor endorsements during the Democratic primary campaign in 2008, and Wells said she is sticking with the president this year.

"It's very important that it's someone in touch with the common person, who knows what it's like to worry about making your house payment, about having health insurance for your child," Wells said. "Romney is not the common man."

Taylor said relatively few of his members are likely to back Romney, but wondered if some might lack the enthusiasm to turn out for Obama.

"Working people, since the 2008 election, don't see the Democrats as really delivering for them," he said. "The Republicans work hard to deliver for their constituency. I wish the Democrats could do the same for theirs."

Ryan Erwin, a Nevada political consultant who's advising the Romney campaign, believes economic conditions favor his candidate.

"People moved to Nevada to chase a dream, so there is an entrepreneurial spirit here," he said. "They see an Obama administration that has promised one thing, delivered something different ? not a single policy that's beneficial to Nevada's job creation environment."

Reno restaurant owner Tim Wulf is the kind of entrepreneur that Romney aides have in mind.

As of the 2008 election, Wulf says he operated three Jimmy John's sandwich shops with 94 employees and was planning to expand. He said administration policies, notably Obama's health care overhaul, undermined his confidence, prompting him to sell one of the stores and cut his workforce to about 50 in hopes he wouldn't be forced to provide them with health care.

"We become a defensive business instead of growing and expanding," he said.

A small business owner in the Obama camp is Ron Nelsen, 52, who runs Las Vegas-based Pioneer Overhead Door. He says the recent downturn was the worst he'd experienced in a 34-year career, forcing him to cut his 10-person workforce in half, but he now detects signs of an upswing and is ready to add at least one more worker.

He believes Obama is more committed than Romney to strengthening the middle class.

"Making the rich pay a little more doesn't scare me," Nelsen said. "I'd love to be rich so I could pay a little more."

Then there's Jon Basso, owner and impresario at the Heart Attack Grill on a pedestrian mall in downtown Las Vegas.

"Taste Worth Dying For" is the restaurant's motto. A vintage ambulance is parked by the entrance, the waitresses are clad as nurses, and customers don hospital gowns before consuming the high-calorie burgers, fries and butterfat shakes.

Basso, tending bar in a doctor's coat, said his business weathered the recession well "because of how outlandish we are." He mimed a coin flip when asked about his presidential preference; his favored candidate had been Ron Paul, the Texas congressman outpaced by Romney.

"Our whole gimmick is one massive libertarian protest," Basso said of his restaurant. "I want the Democrats to stay out of my wallet and the Republicans to stay out of my bedroom."

___

In some ways, neither Obama nor Romney seems like an obvious champion for a reeling state economy that relies heavily on indulgent, vice-spiced tourism.

Romney is a devout Mormon. His Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints opposes gambling and says governments should not sponsor it. Obama, also a sober-minded family man, irked local civic leaders early in his term by using Las Vegas visits as a metaphor for profligacy.

Nonetheless, each candidate has staunch support at the top levels of the casino industry, which has thrived over the decades by winning friends on both sides of the aisle at the statehouse in Carson City and in Congress.

"In Nevada, we say there's only one political party. It's the gaming party," said David Damore, a political science professor at UNLV.

Some of the best-known figures ? casino moguls Sheldon Adelson and Steve Wynn, for example ? have berated Obama's policies. Adelson, CEO of the Las Vegas Sands Corp., is giving tens of millions of dollars to Republican causes this election season, including a group supporting Romney.

However, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, the patriarch of Nevada Democrats, is well-regarded within the industry, and many of its leaders donate to politicians of both major parties.

"At our company, we lean down the middle. We need friends on both sides," said Jan Jones, a former Las Vegas mayor who's now an executive with Caesars Entertainment. She personally supports Obama ? more for his positions on women's issues and health care than for business-related factors.

Early in his term, Obama created a stir by citing Las Vegas in unflattering contexts. He chastised bank employees for lavish Vegas vacations right after they got federal bailouts and later told a town hall meeting in New Hampshire, "You don't blow a bunch of cash on Vegas when you're trying to save for college."

The remarks prompted some business groups to cancel planned Las Vegas trips and infuriated then-Mayor Oscar Goodman, who said Obama "has a real psychological hang-up about the entertainment capital of the world."

On a more recent visit, Obama said, "Let me set the record straight: I love Vegas."

For the most part, said Alan Feldman, a vice president at MGM Resorts International, presidents have little direct impact on the gambling/tourism industry, though he praised the Obama administration for easing visa requirements in ways that help Nevada attract more visitors from countries such as China and Brazil.

It might seem that Romney, from a faith opposed to gambling, would be viewed warily by the industry's movers and shakers, but that's not the case. Influential members of Nevada's large Mormon community have found ways to profit from the casinos over the decades. One of the first influential bankers to make loans to the casinos in the 1960s, Parry Thomas, came from a Mormon family.

Now a pro-Romney political action group is accepting huge sums from Adelson, whose casino investments in Macau and Singapore have made him one of the world's richest men. Some Las Vegans assume a Romney administration would find ways to show gratitude.

"Romney may not particularly like gambling, but he's not going to go out of his way to hurt it," said Jan Jones.

Neither candidate is a likely supporter of another Nevada industry: prostitution. It's illegal in Las Vegas, but is allowed in most Nevada counties.

Dennis Hof, owner of the Moonlite Bunny Ranch brothel near Carson City, says business has boomed even during the recession, thanks in part to publicity from an HBO series about the enterprise.

Keen on politics, Hof has surveyed his customers. He says 60 percent are Democrat, 40 percent Republican, "but the Republicans spend more."

This year, he's leaning toward Romney for his business background.

"I like the fact that this guy has looked at budgets, made hard cuts," Hof said. "Obama doesn't have a clue about business ? he wouldn't know how to run the Bunny Ranch. Romney would."

Iran Is Readying A 'Nightmare Scenario' For The ... - Business Insider

It's getting easy to overlook the tired rhetoric and hollow tension surrounding Iran, the U.S. and Israel.

It's been months, and months since the back-and-forth began. First, Iran's?shutting the Strait of Hormuz, then it's?saying it'd never shut the strait. Then?Israel's planning a solo attack. No,?they're not.

It's frustrating, and more than a little confusing, but that doesn't mean the situation couldn't turn ugly at the drop of a hat.

Joby Warick at The Washington Post reports improved Iranian weapons and an enhanced plan of attack could nail the U.S. fleet parked in the Gulf, and there may be little Navy officials can do about it.

From The Post:

[Iran's] emerging strategy relies not only on mobile missile launchers but also on new mini-submarines, helicopters and hundreds of heavily armed small boats known as fast-attack craft.?These highly maneuverable small boats, some barely as long as a subway car, have become a cornerstone of Iran?s strategy for defending the gulf against a much larger adversary. The vessels can rapidly deploy Iran?s estimated 2,000 anti-ship mines or mass in groups to strike large warships from multiple sides at once, like a cloud of wasps attacking much larger prey.

?This is the scenario that is giving people nightmares,? said [an] official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity in discussing strategy for defending against a possible Iranian attack.

We recently wrote on one strategy for thwarting a multi-pronged attack against a naval task force, but Raytheon's new system?isn't up for handling the hundreds of heavily armed small boats officials believe Iran would send against the U.S. fleet.

While Iran has called American ships in the region a threat, and Tehran has allowed nuclear discussions to seemingly fizzle, the latest round of sanctions are entering the final phase of Washington approval.

Mehr

Iranians waiting for subsidized chicken

The Iranian sanctions already in place are having quite a bite, with the cost of chicken doubling in the past year.

The lack of enough chicken, a staple in the Iranian diet, has led Tehran's security forces to ban creative agencies from showing poultry in movies or on TV.

The "chicken crisis" as it's being called, has seen many people take to the streets in protest, while others wonder how long it will be before the poor to take up arms against the rich.

Assuming the next round of sanctions make matters worse, it seems reasonable to wonder when Tehran might decide it has little to lose, and accepts the?Pyrrhic victory found in sinking a couple of U.S. Navy ships.

With its flotilla of speedboats, fleet of submarines, and huge inventory of missiles and mines, Iran is in the position to inflict some damage on the U.S. fleet if for no other reason that it has such a wide array of vessels to attack.

In addition to the?more than 20 ships?of the 5th Fleet stationed in Bahrain, there will be another strike group headed to the Gulf led by the carrier USS John C. Stennis. On top of this,?four additional minesweepers?arrived in the region last month to ensure shipping lanes remained open and undisturbed. Those craft joined the refitted USS Ponce which is being used as a forward staging base.

To that end, 19 other countries will descend upon the Gulf September 16, with the U.S., to conduct an immense 11-day mine sweeping operation to practice mine countermeasures.

So while the dialogue about Gulf developments can appear to be the same tired old mantra from yesterday, the situation continues to develop and it may not be Iran that strikes first.

With both the U.S. and Israel blaming Iran for the Bulgarian terrorist bombing, it seems likely the two nations could be keeping score, and reach a point where they jointly launch a strike against the Muslim nation.

If that happens, expect the U.S. to suffer casualties and the price of oil to go through the roof. Just don't expect to see it before the November elections.

80% Research Products on Web, Most use Social Media Tools for Peer Opinions before Buying

Web Consulting, SEO and Social Media

San Antonio, Texas (PRWEB) October 30, 2011

According to a new survey, 80% of consumers always ? or almost always ? use the internet to research products, and most use social media tools for peer opinions before making a purchasing decision, says veteran San Antonio SEO consultant and social media coach Jon Donley.

Results of the new survey illustrate the increasing influence of the internet in the marketplace, and the growing power of search, social tools and business reviews and ratings, Donley said.

The survey, commissioned by San Antonio web design and search consulting firm Cook Profitability Services, also illustrates the fading use and influence of the telephone book as a resource for consumers.

Consumer internet research

More than 80% of survey recipients say they always or almost always research products ? electronics, movies, appliances, cars, clothes, etc. ? on the internet before purchase. Another 16% reported that they sometimes research products on the web. Only about 3% say they seldom, if ever, do internet research.

The majority of respondents (52%) also always or almost always research professional service providers ? such as medical, dental, legal, plumbing, etc. Another 31% say they sometimes research these providers on the web. Only 17% say they seldom, if ever, do such research.

Only 10% of respondents say they always, or almost always, use the traditional telephone book for product or service research. Nearly 70% say they seldom, if ever, use the telephone book. A remaining 20% say they occasionally use the book. And less than a quarter say they use the online version of the phone directory.

Consumers use a mix of online tools as they research goods and services, but overwhelmingly, search engines are the leading tool. They survey allowed respondents to select all the tools they use. The results are as follows:

????Search Engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo) ? 96%

????Customer reviews (Yelp, Yahoo Local, City Search, Google Places, etc.) ? 63%

????Company site or online store (Amazon.com, Bestbuy.com, etc.) ? 53%

????Social media sites (Facebook, Linkedin, Google +, Twitter, etc.) ? 44%

????Professional reviews (movie critics, music critics, restaurant critics, etc.) ? 43%

????Online directories (yellowpages.com, etc.) ? 22%

????Better Business Bureau, government sites or media reports ? 15%

The survey underlined the importance of social media in consumer purchasing decisions, especially the opinions of other consumers.

?This is supported by many studies,? Donley said. ?Word of mouth has always been the holy grail of marketing. Now it?s been empowered by the web, and people are hungry to know what their peers think when they make decisions.?

The Facebook giant

And while Facebook ? at 800 million active members ? is the poster child for social, it?s only a part of the puzzle. Social media includes any internet-enabled tool that allows users to contribute or share content with others. This can range from blogs, comments, forums, photo- and video-sharing sites, email, news feeds and powerful business rating and review sites.

The CPS survey questioned its respondents about their use of some major social tools and sites. (Survey members were allowed to choose all that applied from this specific list.)

????Facebook ? 86%

????You Tube ? 62%

????Twitter ? 44%

????Linkedin ? 28%

????Forums/bulletin boards ? 27%

????Blogs ? 23%

????Flickr ? 16%

????MySpace ? 16%

????Other ? 7%

????Picasa ? 5%

????Digg ? 4%

????Vimeo ? 3%

????Reddit ? 3%

????Del.icio.us ? 3%

?The survey shows that connected consumers have energetically embraced the power of the internet to make informed purchasing decisions,? Donley said. ?Their research almost always starts on a search engine, which in turn is a gateway into customer review and rating sites, company sites and stores, and to editorial reviews. Peer recommendations and reviews are a powerful influence, and a large majority has rejected goods or services because of them.?

For businesses trying to decide on their marketing budget allotments, he said, the survey results flag some important issues.

JPMorgan's Dimon wants to stay at bank "many, many more years"

NEW YORK (Reuters) - JPMorgan Chase & Co Chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon said in an interview on Friday that he wants to stay at the bank for "many, many more years."

Dimon spoke to Reuters after announcing that he is rearranging responsibilities of many of his top lieutenants to prepare the bank for his eventual departure.

"Succession is one of the most critical things I have to do -- getting people prepared for these jobs, including mine," said Dimon, whose bank holds $2.29 trillion in assets, more than any other United States-based lender.

Dimon also said the rearrangement is "completely unrelated" to the multibillion-dollar loss from derivatives trades that the bank first disclosed in May.

Of Picking a Retirement Home in Pennsylvania and Doing It Effectively

Some people see retirement as a prolonged family holiday when they can finally loosen up and live lives of relaxation. Retirees have the convenience of picking whether to stay at home with the family or spending the rest of their days living in a secure retirement home. If you or a relative of yours is about to make that significant decision, retirement homes are an attractive option.

Retirement homes are household care facilities that offer medical and social assistance for individuals ages 55 and above. Each tenant is provided a private suite or apartment for his/her own benefit. In addition, most retirement homes have community dining rooms, gathering spaces, leisure spots, and offer assistance with both day-to-day living and possible medical requirements. Units can be leased or bought like a condominium.

Choosing a retirement home can be a difficult experience for the whole household both psychologically and emotionally. Seeing a relative leave for yet another location can be heart-wrenching. By following the tips listed below, you can guide your family away from the drama and make the shift manageable for both parties.

Determine Demands and Wants.

Retirement communities and homes vary on the services they provide. Think about the amenities and services you or your loved one wants and put them on a separate listing. Bear in mind to set apart the "must-haves," like arranged meals and leisure activities, from the "nice-to-haves," like pool, golf courses, and additional creature comforts.

Discover the Right Spot.

Retirement communities have come to be progressively favored over the last years, and there are many choices to pick from. Take into consideration Pennsylvania as an ideal place to retire because the state is teeming with notable vacationer destinations, fantastic features, and fantastic occasions. Transportation will certainly also not be a problem for tenants, as the state is home to the 25th largest bus and light rail service in America. Retirement homes PA locals approve of will certainly be positioned in communities that are secure and provide easy access to wonderful nearby features.

Analyze the Community's Atmosphere.

When selecting among the retirement homes Pennsylvania offers, sometimes, it isn't where you're going that crucial, but who you're with. Get to know the residents and figure out whether you'll be comfortable living with them. Also, you can ask the citizens a few questions about the level of care offered by the personnel.

The senior housing Pennsylvania citizens approve of can assist retirees to enjoy an enriching and tranquil pension. Employ more care when picking a retirement community to genuinely enjoy your golden years. Go to SeniorHomes.com for more information.

New KIDS COUNT Report - Voices for Georgia's Children

Atlanta, GA ? The Annie E. Casey Foundation released a report this week that ranks Georgia 37th in the nation in child well-being. The national 2012 KIDS COUNT Data Book reports that Georgia climbed out of the bottom 10 states on a new, even more robust and comprehensive portrait of how our nation?s children are faring. Georgia has made headways in children?s health and education, but continues to experience setbacks when it comes to their economic well-being. For a PDF of Georgia?s profile, click HERE.

?Georgia is making investments in a variety of initiatives around school improvement, college and career readiness, workforce development, and the recent focus on quality in early learning centers is providing us pathways to improve education and economic opportunity for all Georgians,? said Georgia Family Connection Partnership (GaFCP) Executive Director Gaye Smith. ?Through these initiatives Georgia is poised to shatter the barriers of poverty and racial and economic disparity that hinder our progress.?

While these contributions have lifted Georgia out of the bottom 10, the new Data Book indicates that kids and families in Georgia, as in the rest of the country, continue to grapple with the effects of unemployment, housing costs, home foreclosures, and lower-household incomes in the wake of the economic recession.

?This is a defining moment for Georgia?a mobilizing moment,? said Gov. Nathan Deal. ?While the news in this KIDS COUNT report is encouraging, it also reminds us that our work has just begun. I said from the beginning that I?m committed to our youngest Georgians, who are critical to our future.? I will continue to support communities in ensuring that children will thrive and become successful adults, despite the many challenges they face.?

One in five Georgia children under age 18 lived in poverty in 2005. That rate worsened to one in four children by 2010. More Georgia children live in homes without secure parental employment and more Georgia teens ages 16 to 19 are not working and not in school.?

?These findings confirm Georgia?s long-term struggle with generational poverty,? said Smith. ?The prosperity of our state and nation depends on our children having opportunities to grow up in safe, thriving neighborhoods where their families have ample industry and job opportunities, affordable housing, adequate health care, and quality schools.?

The governor agrees. ?Generational poverty is a persistent issue in Georgia,? he said. ?The most effective way to move families toward self-sufficiency is through a two-generation strategy that helps parents find and keep work and save and build assets while investing in their children?s healthy development and educational success. ?I am committed to ensuring that Georgia?s children are educated healthy, safe, and growing.?

The 2012 KIDS COUNT report introduces a new, expanded index of 16 indicators of child well-being?a change from previous annual rankings based on 10 key indicators. The new index reflects two decades of advances in child development research and ranks each state in four domains: Economic Well-Being, Education, Health, and Family and Community.

Georgia received its highest national ranking in the Health domain?30. Contributing to this ranking is a drop in child and teen death rates, a decline in the number of children without health insurance, a dip in babies born at low birthweight, and a drop in youth ages 12-17 dependence on, or abusing drugs or alcohol.?

Georgia students improved in several key academic areas but still lag behind the nation with a ranking of 38. More high-school students are graduating in four years and Georgia public school students are improving on national proficiency tests in fourth-grade reading and eighth-grade math. Georgia?s history of investing in early childhood education is still evident; our state continues to enroll more 3- and 4-year-olds in preschool.

Georgia is 37th in the nation in the Family and Community domain. More children in the Peach State are living in families where the household head has earned a high-school diploma, and there has been a 9 percent decline in the teen birth rate since 2005. However, the rates of children living in single-parent families and in high-poverty areas are on the rise.

?We celebrate the improvement in key indicators, but we are also mindful of the increased economic pressures facing Georgia families,? said Julie Sharpe, Georgia KIDS COUNT data manager. ?More than 600,000 of Georgia?s children live in poverty. That?s the population of Augusta, Columbus, Macon, and Savannah?combined.?

According to Sharpe, while we have seen some improvements during the last 20 years since we first began tracking the status of children, we still have racial, economic, and geographic disparities that remain hard to overcome and contribute to our lowest ranking?43rd in the nation on Economic Well-Being.

??We must use the data to motivate us to remain firm in our commitment to coming together, investing our time, our expertise, and our resources in today?s families,? said Smith. ?And to protect every child?s right to learn, thrive, and contribute to the future of our great state.?

GaFCP also serves as a resource to state agencies across Georgia that work to improve the conditions of children and families. Georgia KIDS COUNT provides policymakers and citizens with current data they need to make informed decisions regarding priorities, services, and resources that impact Georgia?s children, youth, families, and communities. Organizers display SKorea flag instead of NKorea

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) ? London Olympic organizers mistakenly displayed the South Korean flag on a jumbo screen instead of North Korea's before a women's soccer match Wednesday, prompting the North Koreans to refuse to take the field for nearly an hour.

The flag flap began during player introductions when a North Korean player was introduced along with a shot of the South Korean flag.

The match against Colombia was delayed for more than an hour, and organizers apologized for the error.

"If this matter couldn't have been resolved, then I thought going on is nonsense," coach Sin Ui Gun said through an interpreter after North Korea won 2-0. "We were angry because our players were introduced as if they were from South Korea, which may affect us very greatly as you might know."

The coach said the organizers corrected the mix-up, although it took some time. Large images of the North Korea flag were put up on both stadium jumbo screens during the delay and the players finally came out.

The team manager refused to have the coach respond to a question of what North Korea leader Kim Jong Un's reaction would have been to the incident.

The London organizers took the blame.

"Today ahead of the women's football match at Hampden Park, the South Korean flag was shown on a big screen video package instead of the North Korean flag. Clearly that is a mistake," organizers said. "We will apologize to the team and the National Olympic Committee and steps will be taken to ensure this does not happen again."

The statement, however, included another gaffe: It failed to refer to the countries by their official Olympic names, causing organizers to reissue the statement using "Republic of Korea" and "Democratic People's Republic of Korea."

Commenting on the flap, the International Olympic Committee pointed to London officials.

"It's a matter for the organizers," IOC spokesman Mark Adams said.

The players walked past reporters after the match still in uniform without stopping. Two were carrying flags ? the correct North Korean one.

North Korea and South Korea are bitter rivals. The flag mix-up comes amid high tension on the Korean Peninsula following a North Korean long-range rocket launch in April and repeated threats by Pyongyang to attack the South. Seoul and the U.S. have called the launch a cover for a test of banned long-range missile technology. North Korea says the rocket, which broke apart shortly after liftoff, was meant to put a satellite into orbit.

Wednesday's match started 1 hour, 5 minutes late. Fans were confused at first, then turned to doing the wave and finally started booing as they became increasingly restless.

An announcement was eventually made over the public address system about 20 minutes after the scheduled 7:45 p.m. (1845 GMT; 2:45 p.m. EDT) kick off, apologizing for the delay and saying it "was due to an issue behind the scenes. We're trying to resolve it and we'll keep you updated."

To pass more time, music was pumped from the speakers. Players from both teams finally emerged onto the field about 40 minutes after the match was supposed to begin. The players warmed up again for 10 minutes before they returned inside the tunnel to be led out again for the national anthems.

"It was very difficult after the incident," Colombia coach Ricardo Rozo said. "We had to wait and warm up again. It affected the mood because we were ready for the match.

"I've never had anything happen like this before, where a country can delay a match for an hour."

Flag controversies aren't new at the Olympics. At the 1992 Barcelona Games, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Charles Barkley from the Dream Team draped U.S. flags over their shoulders to hide a rival sponsor's logo on their jackets when they received their gold medals.

At the 2010 Vancouver Games, the Australians displayed a flag with a boxing kangaroo ? the mascot for the country's team ? in the athletes village, despite an International Olympic Committee rule that usually only permits official national flags to be displayed. The IOC eventually relented.

In 2000, sprinter Cathy Freeman caused a stir when she took a victory lap after winning the 400-meter final at the Sydney Games draped in the Aboriginal flag, which was not recognized as an official national flag by the IOC.

Also in 2000, North and South Korean athletes marched together at the opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympics under the unified Korea flag, sparking a standing ovation. But with relations deteriorating in the years since, each country insists on a separate flag.

Last month, there was another mix-up in Britain. British field hockey officials apologized to the South African women's team for playing the apartheid-era national anthem before one of its matches at the London Cup, a warm-up event for the Olympics.

The event's organizer, Great Britain Hockey, said it was an administrative mistake and offered a "full and unreserved apology."

Obama campaign says they're not worried over ?you didn?t build that? attacks

President Barack Obama arrives at Boeing Field in Seattle on Tuesday (Elaine Thompson/AP)

President Barack Obama is personally leading an all-out counterattack against the Republican assault over his "you didn't build that" remark, hitting back in his stump speech and in a new television ad as the Democratic National Committee launches a state-by-state response. But that's not because he's worried about the Republican offensive, top strategist David Axelrod insisted on Wednesday.

Republicans have seized on Obama's comments at a Roanoke, Va., campaign event two weeks ago that "If you've got a business?you didn't build that." The context makes clear that the president was saying entrepreneurs need government infrastructure like roads and bridges, investments in education and what Obama called "this unbelievable American system that allowed you to thrive." But the core quote was heaven-sent for Republicans eager to portray the Democrat as hostile or ignorant when it comes to the top issue on voters' minds, the economy. And it quickly made its way into hard-hitting ads.

"I was concerned when I saw the initial ad that it might be impactful. I've concluded that it's not all that impactful," Axelrod said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

"But the ad that we did in response got a very good response in the kind of testing that we did," Axelrod said, stressing that Obama's response served to "brush them (Republicans) back" while making the case for his economic policies.

Time will tell. But if Team Obama is truly not worried about this new assault, is the president wasting precious time and money on what has clearly been an escalating response?

Raising funds late Tuesday at the Hunts Point, Wash., home of Costco co-founder Jim Sinegal, Obama took pains to defend himself and recast his comments from two weeks ago.

"I have to tell you, I generally have patience with what the other side says about me. That's the requirement of this job," he began. "And if you don't like folks talking about you, you probably shouldn't run for president."

"The one thing I do have no patience for is this argument that somehow what I'm criticizing is success.?That's an argument you hear from the other side: 'Oh, he wants to punish success.'?I want to promote success," he said.

On Wednesday morning, Republican National Committee Communications Director Sean Spicer diagnosed "a little bit of panic in Chicago right now."

"This comment has clearly struck a chord with the American people," Spicer said, describing Obama's remarks as "talking down the people that we need at this very time to be out there helping to turn this economy around."

And Spicer had a pointed rejoinder to the "out of context" criticisms of the Republican approach, telling CNN: "The context which you're alluding to is that we've got 8.2 percent unemployment, 23 million Americans out of work, and we should be right now encouraging that American spirit of entrepreneurship."

Finance options for your start-up business | BusinessTrade.org

Investment companies typically offering venture capital specially target high-potential SMEs. Here is what you need to know about venture capital as a funding option for your business.
What is venture capital?
Venture capital is money provided by a group of investors to small businesses. It is sometimes known as risk capital.?This money is provided to entrepreneurs to help them with the start-up capital they require to finance their enterprise. It includes financial backing for advertising, research, infrastructure and products. Venture capital firms or small business investment companies offer venture capital to entrepreneurs with new small-scale businesses.
How does venture capital work?
Venture capital is a specific form of financing which does not involve loans or debt. Venture capital is viewed as an alternative form of financing from traditional banks. The money that venture capital firms or small business investment companies provide acts as a long term investment. In this way, the money is given in exchange for a share in the success of the business. This means that the venture capital is offered in return for part ownership of the new business, which usually infers that the venture capital firm will be involved in some managerial decisions. The investment company does this to ensure that the new business is nurtured. An investment company aims to increase the value of the new business and make a return on its investment.
Who is involved in venture capital?
Small business investment companies which are also known as venture capital firms usually deal with risk capital. These firms or companies manage the pooled money of other investors?in a professionally-managed fund. The companies are made up of partnerships between groups of people who are investors. This partnership may be an involvement between investors, investment banks and financial institutions that pool their investments. Different venture capital firms may take different approaches to investment. For example, some firms may focus their investments towards a specific industry or region and engage themselves in unique ways.
What do venture capital firms look for in a business?

Samsung Galaxy Nexus (Unlocked)

Finally, an unlocked smartphone we can get excited about. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus ($349 direct from Google) is tempting to begin with, since you can use any AT&T or T-Mobile SIM card, even prepaid or monthly ones, plus it will work overseas. And the price is very low for an unlocked phone, which typically costs $500 to $600, leading us to believe Google is subsidizing it somehow. But the Galaxy Nexus is also in the unique position of being the only phone running Android 4.1 "Jelly Bean" (Free, 4.5 stars) right now, and it's the only?phone you can buy that's guaranteed to get quick Android OS updates. As such, even though some other phones now beat it on pure hardware specs, the unlocked Galaxy Nexus is our Editors' Choice for unlocked smartphones.

Design and Screen
Measuring 5.33 by 2.67 by 0.35 inches (HWD) and weighing 4.76 ounces, the Galaxy Nexus is constructed of all dark gray plastic with the exception of the glass screen. The textured back panel is pleasantly grippy, although it's also hard plastic and not a soft-touch material. The phone isn't particularly eye-catching, but it's finely crafted nonetheless, and the unlocked version is a shade thinner than the CDMA model, which is welcome. The left side holds a volume rocker switch, while the right side houses the Power button and the three-dot docking connector.

The 4.65-inch Super AMOLED screen offers full 720p (1,280-by-720-pixel) resolution. Fonts look exceedingly sharp and crisp. Colors are vibrant, and you get deep blacks. But solid whites looks like pale gray. And like older AMOLED screens, the lowest brightness setting is still pretty bright, which is an issue when using the phone in a dark room. Used within its limits, though, it's still a beautiful screen, but the state of the art has moved forward a bit.?Typing on the screen in both portrait and landscape mode is a pleasure. There's plenty of room to work with, and Jelly Bean's improved predictive text puts it on an even keel with iOS 5.1.?

Connectivity and Voice Quality
The unlocked Galaxy Nexus is a quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and quintuple band HSPA+ 21 (850/900/1700/1900/2100 MHz) device with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. It supports HSPA+ 21 speeds on both AT&T and T-Mobile networks here and overseas. It works with regular mini-SIMs (not micro); I tested the Nexus with an AT&T SIM, which worked perfectly.?Inside there's NFC, a gyroscope and compass, and a barometer in addition to the typical accelerometer and proximity and light sensors.

Unfortunately, you're not going to see the same data speeds with this phone as you would with an LTE or even HSPA+ 42 device?and frankly, we've seen HSPA+ 21 devices that test faster than they do here. In a series of tests, the unlocked Galaxy Nexus with an AT&T SIM averaged just 800Kbps to 1200Kbps down, and roughly 100 to 130Kbps up, with 230ms ping times, thanks to a combination of spotty reception quality and the slower data radio. That's decidedly 3G, even when testing outside in midtown Manhattan. We'll chalk it up to a bad test day for AT&T, but even with clear sailing you'd be hard pressed to top 3Mbps down.

Voice calls sounded great, though. Callers sounded clear in the earpiece, with plenty of volume, and transmissions through the microphone were crisp and detailed. I heard a good amount of street noise through the mic, but my voice always cut through loud and clear above it.?Calls sounded fine through a Jawbone Era Bluetooth headset ($129, 4 stars). Voice dialing worked perfectly over Bluetooth using Android's stock voice dialer, which you can also trigger from a headset. The speakerphone is pretty weak, both for calls and alert sounds; I barely heard the alarm when I tested it, and it was set to maximum volume. The 1750mAh battery is slightly smaller than what you get with the CDMA versions; we're testing battery life and will update this review as soon as we have a result.
