It's Human Nature?

Stick with me for a while?this will have a point?

Many smarter people than I have figured out that humans can?t turn away from a train wreck. See Hearst, Yellow Journalism, a certain 24 hour news channel, and your local freeway commute for example?

My research into social media has also turned up the interesting factoid that people love posts that have numbers in them. See Americans? unique attraction to self improvement?

Last Monday, I posted an article at Creator?s website entitled 5 Shocking Things About Director-Accompanists which rose quickly toward the top of our currently most viewed articles (#5 with a bullet!). See gratuitous exploitation of two pieces of fascinating information (for research purposes only of course?)?

On Tuesday I got one of those infrequent calls from a friend of mine who said ?I think you?re smart with that 5 of this, 7 of that thing you?ve got going?? See research confirmed?

Now what do I do? See input requested from colleagues like you?

Please leave a comment and let me know what you think.

Struggling Young Readers Like Kindles

60-Second Science60-Second Science | More Science

Middle school students in a reading improvement class liked using e-readers for a variety or reasons, and felt their reading improved as a result. Sophie Bushwick reports.

More 60-Second Science

Kindles, Nooks and other E-readers catch flack for threatening the future of printed books. But reading itself may get a boost from the devices. For example, a study of struggling students found that the kids felt better about reading after a course in which they used Amazon Kindles. The research is in the International Journal of Applied Science and Technology. [Twyla Miranda et al, Reluctant Readers in Middle School: Successful Engagement with Text Using the E-Reader]

For two months, 199 middle-schoolers in a reading improvement class in Texas had 15-to-25 minutes every day when they were free to read on the Kindle. In general, the students felt the device improved their reading ability. And they tended to enjoy using an e-reader.

They noted the ease of carrying multiple books in one device, and the feeling that reading was suddenly a high-tech 21st century activity rather than a boring waste of time. And some low-level readers who might otherwise be embarrassed to be seen with a simple book liked keeping their peers in the dark about what title they were reading. In the old days, one had to use a fake book-cover to achieve that level of secrecy.

Subjects in a cohort in Sweden, some of whom had been exposed to a community intervention program to prevent diabetes, were evaluated 8-10 years after baseline for the presence of diabetes mellitus or impaired glucose metabolism ("pre-diabetes") in relation to a baseline report of alcohol consumption. Approximately 2,000 men and 3,000 women had a normal glucose tolerance test at baseline; of these 105 men and 57 women developed type II diabetes. Of subjects with pre-diabetes at baseline, 175 men and 98 women progressed to diabetes. The authors report that total alcohol consumption and binge drinking increased the risk of pre-diabetes and diabetes in men, while low consumption decreased diabetes risk in women. However, the authors did not discuss the findings in their cohort that in essentially all comparisons, the highest risk of diabetes or pre-diabetes was among non drinkers.

Forum reviewers had some concerns about the study. For example, the study included some subjects who had been exposed to an intervention trial to prevent diabetes, yet no information is given on potential effects of the intervention. It was not a population-based group. Also, the sample was "enriched" with subjects who had a positive family history of diabetes, which may make it more difficult to judge the effects of environmental factors. Ex-drinkers and never drinkers were included in the abstainer group.

It appears that the authors focused only on the "statistically significant" results rather than commenting on the overall pattern of association (lower risk of developing diabetes for moderate drinkers than for abstainers and heavier drinkers). Further, the number of subjects in many of the sub-groups was very small, making it difficult to define specific cut-points for effects of alcohol on risk.

Nevertheless, reviewers considered that, overall, these analyses support the usual findings from previous research of a "U-shaped curve" for alcohol and diabetes for both men and women. There appears to be a reduction in risk with moderate alcohol intake and possibly an increased risk for heavier drinking.

Selena Gomez to Haters: Bring It!

Due to her relationship with Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez is not the most popular singer on the planet.

She's faced numerous death threats over the past year, in fact, with authorities actually getting involved at times due to the serious nature of the personal attacks.

But Selena is handling the pressure as best she can, never backing away from those who claims to love Justin, yet somehow also don't want him to be happy in his relationship. Latest case in point: check out a photo Gomez posted to Instagram on the set of her new film, Spring Breakers.

Selena Gomez on Instagram

This isn't the first time Selena has addressed her critics. She said in an interview last year that the single "Who Says" was written "to the haters... to the people who try to bring you down."

As you can tell here, though, those people have failed miserably when it comes to Selena Gomez. You tell 'em, girl!

Q. Web Hosting Solutions For Small Businesses

There was a time when businesses literally moved at a snail's pace. Limited modes of communication and the difficulty in getting fresh news off the press contributed to this.At that time, the telephone was the fastest means of communication and the Internet had not been born. But, with the arrival of the Internet, the face of world business underwent a revolutionary change. Emails, mobile phones and instant online interaction have become the order of the day, taking business to giddy heights.Of course, the single most contributing factor to this was the ease and speed with which communication could flow from...

If you have just entered the world of domain name and website hosting, you may be left overwhelmed at all the available options before you. However, the task of choosing the right domain name and best web hosting solutions is not an easy one by any standards.

Two of the biggest decisions before offline businesses about to transform their presence to online are the selection of the right domain name and choosing the best web hosting solutions. It is exactly where the services of a professional company such as a web hosting and domain registration Australia company come into the picture.Such a company helps by offering easy domain name registration and customized hosting solutions. Not only this, the name of the domain is chosen in such a way that it is easy for customers to remember it, promote it on the web, and make it friendly to search engine robots.By hiring the professional services of such a web hosting company, your business gets the advantage of determining what is best for it, formulating plans to achieve it easily, and attaining it without any deviations. However, you need to consider certain factors as far as web hosting is concerned and we would talk about them in detail. The first decision before you in the context of website hosting is whether you want to go with a free host or a paid host. If you opt for the free host, you may get free email services but you will have to face obtrusive advertising and the ability of your online business will be limited as you would not have rights to expand or move files of your website. Moreover, the technical support offered by a provider of free web hosting may be non-existent, limited, or slow.Shared hosting, which is a part of paid hosting, is the most popular form of web hosting. It is worthwhile to note that most of the offered packages are scalable, which means that you can start with a small plan and upgrade it as your requirements change. The best part about shared website hosting is that you can use your domain and related email and take advantage of expert customer support. If you want to house your website on a server by itself, dedicated hosting may be an excellent choice for you. This form of hosting is priced a big higher and best suited for big companies and websites with high traffic. You can use multiple domain and even host additional websites on one server if you decide so.In short, the answer to your question of how to select the best form of web hosting lies in your actual requirements. Define them clearly and you will be able to make a fast and informed decision, which will pay in the short and the long run.

New evidence that comets deposited building blocks of life on primordial Earth

ScienceDaily (Mar. 27, 2012) ? New research reported in San Diego on March 27 at the 243rd National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS) provides further support for the idea that comets bombarding Earth billions of years ago carried and deposited the key ingredients for life to spring up on the planet.

Jennifer G. Blank, Ph.D., who led the research team, described experiments that recreated with powerful laboratory "guns" and computer models the conditions that existed inside comets when these celestial objects hit Earth's atmosphere at almost 25,000 miles per hour and crashed down upon the surface. The research is part of a broader scientific effort to understand how amino acids and other ingredients for the first living things appeared on a planet that billions of years ago was barren and desolate. Amino acids make up proteins, which are the workhorses of all forms of life, ranging from microbes to people.

"Our research shows that the building blocks of life could, indeed, have remained intact despite the tremendous shock wave and other violent conditions in a comet impact," Blank said. "Comets really would have been the ideal packages for delivering ingredients for the chemical evolution thought to have resulted in life. We like the comet delivery scenario because it includes all of the ingredients for life -- amino acids, water and energy."

Comets are chunks of frozen gases, water, ice, dust and rock that astronomers have termed "dirty snowballs." These snowballs, however, may be 10 miles or more in diameter. Comets orbit the sun in a belt located far beyond the most distant planets in the solar system. Periodically, comets break loose and hurtle inward, where they may become visible in the sky.

Billions of years ago, however, swarms of comets and asteroids bombarded Earth with the remnants still visible as craters on the moon. Scientific evidence suggests that life on Earth began at the end of a period 3.8 billion years ago called the "late heavy bombardment" that involved both comets and asteroids. Before that, Earth was too hot for living things to survive. The earliest known fossils with evidence of life date from 3.5 billion years ago. So how could life originate so quickly when there was little evidence of water or the amino-acid building blocks for making proteins?

Blank and colleagues at the Bay Area Environmental Research Institute NASA/Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif., set out to check whether amino acids could remain intact after a comet's descent through Earth's atmosphere. Previous analyses of comet dust samples returned to Earth by a NASA spacecraft eliminated any doubt that amino acids do occur in comets.

In one set of experiments, they used gas guns to simulate the enormous temperatures and powerful shock waves that amino acids in comets would experience on upon entering Earth's atmosphere. The gas guns, devices that weigh thousands of pounds, hit objects with high-pressure blasts of gas moving at supersonic speeds. They shot the gas at capsules filled with amino acids, water and other materials.

The amino acids did not break down due to the heat and shock of the simulated crash. Indeed, they began forming the so-called "peptide bonds" that link amino acids together into proteins. The pressure from the impact of the crash apparently offset the intense heat and also supplied the energy needed to create the peptides, she explained. In other experiments, Blank's team used sophisticated computer models to simulate conditions as comets collided with Earth.

Blank suggested that there may well have been multiple deliveries of seedlings of life through the years from comets, asteroids and meteorites.

Nevermind French Or Chinese Parenting, Diversity Defines American Childrearing

When it comes to extreme parenting philosophies, America is just begging for their own crazy animal-themed mother to take control. Nevermind that Amy Chua was actually employed at Yale and raising her kids in the states, she?s emblematic of all ?Chinese mothers. Ignore the fact that Pamela Druckerman was a transplant, she brought up a b?b?, not a baby. Definitely French.

Obviously, all mothers in those two countries behave just like the parenting books would have you believe. Why else would we be stereotyping all French children as more polite and all Chinese children as musically proficient shut-ins. It wouldn?t make sense to throw those assumptions around without being sure. And the parenting world always makes sense.

Alright, back to reality. The most amazing thing about all our new parenting trends is their impressive ability to over-simplify parents and reduce them to the easiest-to-explain common denominator. Or the most headline-grabbing common denominator, but I guess that?s a different topic.

Do you ever wonder why there?s no quintessential American parenting theology? Why we aren?t dedicated to one single approach and we refuse to let one parent or author define us? American parents have accepted, for better or worse, that there are a whole lot of different schools of approach. From free-range to attachment, hipster to slow family, most of us accept that no single philosophy fully encompasses our parenting choices. And we definitely don?t expect them to apply to everyone in the entire country.

So why are we keen to stereotype and make grand sweeping assumptions about other cultures and their parenting techniques? Why do we allow any labels or passing parenting trend to define who we are as mothers and fathers?

Parents everywhere generally have the same goal. We want to do what?s best for our kids. We want to help them grow up to be successful human beings.

Now, we all have different ideas about what success is. We don?t agree on what?s best or how to get there. There are plenty of things to discuss and debate along the way. But parents in general have a combined goal of raising the next generation to be happier and healthier than the current one. By the way, that?s not unique to our country, it fits in all over the world.

The strict guidelines set out by parenting guidebooks and creating ?parenting trends? don?t do anything to help real adults navigate the difficult journey that is raising children. In fact, a new study suggests that they do the opposite, they leave parents feeling insecure and confused. They create adults who are afraid to trust their own instincts when it comes to parenting their kids.

Racially stereotyping parenting guides go one step further. They make you confused. They make you afraid to use your own reason logic. And they promote a dumbed-down, overly simplified, intensely generalized view of parenting in other cultures. It?s a trinity of parenting trend madness.

There?s a reason that we haven?t tried to create ?The Great American Guide to Parenting.? There?s no way for us to fit all these disparate ideas together. And it?s the exact same reason that no book will ever give you an accurate or fair representation of parenting culture in another country. There?s simply no way to generalize any group of parents into a single message, especially not one provocative enough to garner media coverage.

We should stop worrying about Chinese parenting, French parenting, Attachment parenting and Free Range parenting. Instead, let?s start focusing on how parenting works for you, in your own individual home with your own one-of-kind kid.

Arsenic in soil raises cancer concerns

Exposure to arsenic in soil and mine waste may have contributed to a slight increase in past cancer risk in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas in the Goldfields region of Victoria, Australia, according to new research. (Credit: Image of "girl holding dirt" via Shutterstock)

U. MELBOURNE (AUS) ? A new study based in Australia finds slightly higher rates of some cancers in areas with higher arsenic levels.

Dora Pearce, a researcher at the University of Melbourne?formerly of the University of Ballarat, where the study was based?explored how soil arsenic levels and cancer rates varied across central Victoria.

By using 20 years of data from the Victorian Cancer Registry and a measure of soil arsenic derived from geochemical data provided by the University of Ballarat and GeoScience Victoria, Pearce concludes that ongoing recorded monitoring of environmental sources of arsenic is needed.

The findings are reported in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology.

?Arsenic is naturally occurring around gold mineralization and is even used as an indicator in gold exploration, so it can be concentrated in soil and mine waste dumps that are still scattered across our landscape,? says Pearce.

In the Goldfields region, many residential communities have grown up around historical gold mining areas.

?Our previous research detected small traces of arsenic in toenail clippings from children living in this region, showing that exposure to arsenic in soil could be an ongoing problem and that we should not be too complacent.

?We hope that by raising community awareness of this issue, childhood exposures to arsenic in soil, and future cancer risk, will be reduced in the Goldfields region of Victoria,? says Pearce.

Whooping Cough Bacteria May Be Changing Their Ways In Australia

CDC

The red dots are Bordatella pertussis bacteria, the cause of whooping cough.

Whooping cough has made a comeback lately, with big outbreaks in California and elsewhere.

One factor is spotty vaccination.

Now researchers in Australia think they've filled in another piece of the puzzle there.

They say the vaccine is better at targeting some strains of the bacterium responsible for whooping cough, Bordetella pertussis, and that's allowing other strains to flourish.

Now this this doesn't mean the vaccine is no longer effective, says microbiologist Ruiting Lan of the University of New South Wales, who oversaw the research. "It is still quite important to stop the transmission" by getting vaccinated, he tells Shots.

But in a study published this month in Infectious Disease, he says it looks like the whooping cough bacteria are changing.

Lan and his colleagues performed genetic tests of bacterial cultures, grown from samples taken to diagnose patients in clinics across Australia. His team was looking for bacteria with variants of two genes which Lan says make them "mismatched" to the vaccine.

?

Until 1997, the whooping cough vaccine included whole cells of pertussis bacteria. That provided robust immunity, but the side effects could be nasty.

Now the vaccine uses only a few select parts of the cell, from which your body learns to detect and fight off infection. But previous research has shown that in certain strains of whooping cough, those parts of the cell have genetic differences that the vaccine doesn't target. And since the new vaccine was introduced, those variants have become more common.

Australia is in the midst of a whooping cough epidemic, with 38,000 cases last year in a country of just 22 million people. Lan says before 2008, when the epidemic started, the variant strains appeared in 31 percent of the bacteria in diagnostic cultures. In samples from the current epidemic, that number jumped to 84 percent.

Lan says this is evidence of the bacteria responding to the vaccine, learning to evade it. But Tom Clark, an epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, says that's not necessarily true.

Clark points to several factors that could explain the change. Culture samples aren't used to diagnose whooping cough very often, he says, because newer techniques are faster. That means Lan's samples might not represent the whole spectrum of bacterial strains that are circulating.

And Clark says the genetic variants Lan studied are nothing new. "We've seen them in the U.S. for a long time," he says. But when the CDC has studied the effectiveness of the whooping cough vaccine, as it did in the 1990s and again in 2010, they've found that it's quite high.

Immunity is "98 percent or 100 percent within a year" of vaccination, Clark says.

But immunity does drop off over time. Both Clark and Lan say waning immunity is a problem in the adult population, many of whom were vaccinated decades ago. Whooping cough isn't a big deal for adults, but can be deadly to infants. Adults, including seniors, can get booster shots to reduce the risk that they'll pass the bacteria to children.

Imagine Plans New Version of Orwell's 1984

George Orwell?s seminal literary work 1984 could be getting a new movie adaptation.

Imagine Entertainment, the production house run by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, and LBI Entertainment, the banner run by Julie Yorn, are teaming up to develop a new take on the 20th century classic.

The book is set in a dystopian society in a perpetual state of war, which in turn leads to a state of paranoia. Propaganda, surveillance, mind control and cult of personality -- concepts seen in totalitarian and fascist states such as Nazi Germany and Stalin?s Soviet Union -- were taken to new levels in the book written in 1948 and published in 1949.

The story centers on Winston Smith, who works for a government branch called the Ministry of Truth, where he alters facts and histories but secretly harbors desires of rebellion (as well as desires of a forbidden love affair). The ideas in the novel became hugely influential in the worlds of politics and art, with the author?s name eventually becoming an adjective (Orwellian).

Shepard Fairey, the street artist perhaps best known for creating the Barack Obama "Hope" poster, was instrumental in bringing the project to Imagine and LBI and might take some sort of producer role once the deals shake out.

Imagine and Fairey were pursuing Orwell's estate for the rights to 1984 and discovered that Yorn was simultaneously seeking the rights. The companies then decided to pair up. ?

The producers are out to writers to find a take on the material before setting it up at a studio.

The book has been adapted several times in TV and movies, the most recent being, natch, in 1984 in a version directed by Michael Radford and starring John Hurt, Richard Burton and Suzanna Hamilton.
